What Music do you listen to whilst playing games?

I'm pretty stereotypical, really:

FPS - An angry man coupled with guitars that make no sense as a muscial instrument and a seemingly epileptic bloke who has been exposed to some flash photography on drums suffice.

RPG - None. The Music included adds to the atmosphere. Usually.

Sports Games - Due to the large amount of aggression and frustration brought on by this genre, some lovely acoustic songs make sense to me. Perhaps i'll put The Smiths on. Oh Morrissey, take me away from this 4-0 defeat and into the lands of barely-contained-homosexuality and quiet sadness...

:'(

Now it's your turn, you don't have to stick to the genres i picked, so go mental if you like.

When I play COD4 or COD5, I tend to listen to something that gets you pumped up, like music you work out to. It has to be in your face, rock, metal, or whatever, all it has to do is get my blood flowing.

Pantera, lots of it. Especially their album "The Great Southern Trendkill". That's for online FPS's though, for singleplayer. Nothing, it kinda ruins the feel of the game then.

Rise against, or anything else with fast guitars that keep a rhythm well. (for FIFA 09 single-player)

In online FPS'S sound usually helps you to hear the enermy (COD 4, Halo 3 etc..)

I played the song "I don't want to set the world on fire" while I went around burning things with my flamer in Fallout 3

If the game speaks, I leave the game on usually.

Otherwise metal. Lots of it. In any variety (except Nu Metal, metalcore, brutal, deathcore, grindcore, and goregroove).

i have a couple of playlists i sift through, most common one though is my video-game music one, which includes:

Koji Kondo - Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask complete OST

Instant Rememdy - Swedish programmer who's made alot of nice Commodore 64 Sid remixes

Syntax Error - Swedish radio show that centers around old-school video game music, extremely good.

Jeremy Soule - Morrowind/Oblivion OST

Megaman 1-6 + 9 OST (all the 8 bit ones)

Those and some random remixes of video game music.

Yeah those sub genres are pretty shoddy. Thrash, old school Death and Prog are my favorite metal subgenres to listen to. Game wise, i think its a shame to override the original music in the games, especially the epic scores of MGS and Final Fantasy games.

I turn off the game music when I play Warcraft III and play dark, epic classical music by composers such as Brahms and Shostakovich. It works very well.

For gears i usually listen to Jazz. nothing better then chainsawing someone to pieces while listening to jazz. i don't otherwise play music in games. especially not online shooters as i really want to hear my enemies.

depends what game
if i need to be energetic and concentrate, usually something like Nickleback or DragonForce :p
if its an easy-going game, maybe something like zoo tycoon (dont judge me XD) then usually easy-listening stuff, mainly country

Just to point out, Brahms and Shostakovitch are from the romantic period of music, not the classical. Classical period is 1750-about 1820, with Haydn, Beethoven and Mozart.
You probably know this, and for that reason im sorry to sound like a pompous twat, but as a music geek, I hate seeing all pre 20th century music branded as 'classical' lol.

No problems, its just easier to say "classical" I guess. Still goes well with the game lol.

Yeah some of that romantic period stuff goes great with games; the sense of drama that composers such as Brahms and Elgar convey in their compositions, i feel, can be heard in game music such as Harry Gregson-Williams' MGS4 score.
And yeah, i guess on a forum where not everyone knows about the history of music, terming it all as Classical would make it make more sense to the casual reader than going on about the Baroque or the Renaissance era, for example :p

Either Led Zeppelin or The Doors but I will occasionally listen to some Aerosmith. It doesn't really matter what type of game for me though, I'll just listen to that music anyway.

Seems most gamers enjoy a bit of metal with their games. Nice mix of genres though.
