Honestly, the thing that frustrates me the most is how arrogant he is. It obviously isn't enough that he abuses his power for his own means. But he has to be insulting and flaunt the fact that its all in his hands as it stands. He's the only thing preventing the board of attorney-generals from advocating an R18.

So far all his responses have included blatant insults such as calling Australian gamers "R18+ nerds", and degenerating the argument to being only about "imaginary worlds". Is this not a democracy, aren't we all suppose to have a voice? The hypocrisy and arrogance is flabbergasting.

I worry about any person who wants to try and adjust his own rules to ban something and generate an opinion on something which he probably hasn't evne played, but oh what the hey.

WHY CAN'T HE JUST SHUT UP! NO ONE LIKES HIM! HE MUST BE THE MOST DEPRESSED MAN IN THE WORLD!

"Get Points"? Seriously, if you're going to hate someone, know about the modern parts. People don't rage against 120 Days of Sodom anymore for a reason. (Don't look that up.)[/quote

Wow. Just Wow. It never ceases to amaze me that not only can people so stupid (and seemingly immature!) hold such power, but they are allowed to keep it. A true victory for democracy.

By the way, does this remind anybody else about the "video nasties" "problem" in Britain in the 80s, where the govornment literally made up questionairs and reports that would get them the answers they wanted? It was statistically proven that these reports were giving false results, yet the false results were the ones the writers wanted so they didn't change the format in any way and eventually many videos were banned to "protect children" who had never and never were going to watch them.

The only way this won't happen again is if everyone knows what's happening every step of the way in any attempts to ban videogames. The ratings board in Australia may have spectacularly failed to do its job (including creating new rating catagories if nessicery), but at least we still have free press eh?

That would be more violent if they used the same engine that ran WaW (dont lie we all know that game was massive violence)

---Spoilers---

Yeah but Fox news have fuck all power, and at least that reporter actually retracted her condemnation of the game.

This fucktard is the one person between having the rating system changed. And there's no way around it.

Honestly the "controversy" over it is completely ridiculous. I could make an extensive list of games where you can kill innocent civilians. I haven't played MW2, but from what I've read you don't fail the mission if you don't kill any civilians. It's not the objective. The mere fact that you 'can' is suppose to be soo controversial. I can run around stabbing innocent people in Assassin's Creed 2. Or choose to kill innocent people in Dragon Age.

I don't understand how he is so stupid. Does he not really that mostly EVERY game released is given an MA standard, this means -18 year old players are allowed to use these games that get +18 or +17 rating in most countries. If anything an 18+ rating would prevent more under 18s from accessing these sorts of games.

On top of that he's only hindering Australia's video game industry. This is a multi-million dollar industry. The same as the movie industry is. If parents choose to allow their under 18 children to watch R rated movies it's their choice, and not the responsibility of the government. EXACTLY the same as it is for video games.

Sigh.

So to get this straight, he's saying that Mewtwo is too violent for MA15+ (too violent for people who can buy MA15+), but doesn't think it's necessary to add in another rating for people well above that age?

oh, and

/facepalm
I never could catch that bastard when I was 8! Its all the ratings fault! Now that i'm 16 i can catch him with parental supervision!

Same here, I would have killed Michael Atkinson by now if I lived there
He'd probably blame violent videogames with his last breath.

Also, it's nice not to be in Australia right now. How is he still calling the shots on this?

It would be worse if they used the L4D2 modified source engine.

That would not go down well anywhere.

She wasn't a reporter. Is Michael Atkinson the only one who isn't looking fully into matters here?

Anyway, I can't say I'm surprised. It would be amusing to see someone suggest putting a rating on what veterans can or can't buy; I mean, if a video game is supposed to fuck you up, what effect does real warfare have on you? Oh, wait, we have to support our men and women in uniform.

In fact, do you get 'points' at all in the single-player part?

Not that I'd care if they'd ban MW2 anywhere though.
You can't get anything in that "scene" 'cos you can turn it off. So if you did get anything for doing it, then the people who turned it off wouldn't be able to get said thing.

I wonder how many people did turn it off? I would bet none of them did, it's actually really boring and annoying.

Umm, Anchor Person? Difference is very little here. You're splitting hairs over nothing to be a smart arse.

Edit: For clarity. It originated from a segment on Fox News by Martha MacCallum, who interviewed a Psychology expert/author, who condemned it, then later retracted her condemnation after watching someone play ME for a few hours.

That would be pretty powerful stuff....

Would make a better war game. Hell I believe many critics liked WaW for being more War/Gore. Rather then the ketchup explosion of MW2, that would make an impact, make a person feel that kinda guilt

Anybody else remember that elvel in MW1 where you soared invincible above the field of battle in a plane, all the while pounding yuor enemies with high explosive rounds that wouldn't have left enough meat to fill a shoe box? (Yes I know the bodies wern't actually vaporised but shush; I'm making a point here.) How come nobody's decried that as overly violent?

Personally I found that to be one of the most disturbing levels in the game; those poor buggers never stood a chance. There wasn't any chance of them fighting back, they were just killed. Oh and the pilot's/gunner's commentry sure didn't help!

Yet all of a sudden because you play a non-American (I havn't played the game, don't know who you actually play) killing people instead of an American killing people it's too violent and must be banned. Either way, you're still killing people. And either way, you're not actually killing anything; you're turning the ones and zeros that make up the AI into the set of ones and zeros that make up ragdoll physics.

Anyway... enough of my ranting. It's just that people this ignorant really, *really* annoy me.

/sigh this guy is a freaking nong.

I wish we'd get a national 18+ video game rating already, I'm freaking 30 and this guy wants to ban a game (that I'll never play) because of kids?
