What nationality/culture would you dress up as for a dress-up party?

Hopefully the inevitable ludicrously exaggerated national stereotypes won't seem too crass and offensive to anyone (I could stuff some pillows in a big t-shirt and wear this apron with a burger on it and say I'm American... I kid, I know most of you probably aren't like that), but anyway, my friend is using nationalities/cultures as a theme for her 18th. The costumes don't have to embody the main national stereotype, just something associated with any particular nationality. My friend's dressing up as a samurai or some other kind of Asian warrior type so it might be fun to go as something else involving weapons, or as an old-fashioned English gentleman with a top hat or a bowler hat and all (although, it might seem stupid if I'm a girl, oh well) with the accent and poncy olden-day speak.

I'm smitten because I just discovered the box of old dress-up clothes I thought we'd got rid of. I should be able to pull something together and I have a lot of time. I'm still trying to think of ideas, though.

What do you think would be the most fun/interesting to dress up as? Yes, this is sort of an advice thread disguised as a general discussion thread and I just want to see if there are any ideas I can steal...

Do they have to be real-life cultures? I always loved the aesthetic of the Fremen from Dune (Well, what I had imagined the aesthetic to be.)

Oh god. I hope it stays fun and doesn't stray into racism [http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2010/02/28/the-compton-cookout-racism-resistance-and-backlash/].

British Navy Commander or the flip side of things and go as a Pirate.
Ottoman empire soldier.

The best thing is when two groups of people go as opposing characters.

Like a load of redcoats and a load of pirates.

Or a load of space marines and a load of aliens.

Or a load of mods and a load of rockers.

Then everyone gets pissed and has a big play fight.

You could go as a old English lady, rather than a gentleman. Don't confuse them with businessmen, who wore bowler hats. Industrialists wore top hats. Google for some images.

Going as a Celtic woad-wearing warrior would be well wicked.

Geisha?

Babouchka?

Some kind of soldier?

Get a male friend and go as Dr.Who and his accomplice?

Must be a stupid theme for girls. There were no girls in the past just like there are no girls on the internets.

SS officer. C'mon, you know they look cool.
Yeah. If anything, you gotta hand it to the Germans during WWII. Their uniforms looked nice.

So for me either that or:
- A Knight!!!! T get in touch with my families roots.
- A Viking!!! Get in touch with my roots some more!
- A Roman Legionary! To get in touch with my other roots again.

You could call it "space space: why space is better" and have a picture of a space bar floating in space for the cover.
I'll put you in the credits.

I distinctly remember this sort of thing being in an episode of Veronica Mars. And now to eat steak and shout at sports to get my manliness back.
Actually, that wouldn't be a half bad idea; go as the epitome of manliness.
