I wonder, whenever someone says something negative about our hobby do you ever say: "Before it was video games it was X that was blamed for society's ills?" Sometimes I use this line as a defense against criticism and I want to know if other gamers have used it before?

It's a common defense, yes. Television and movies were blamed for society's ills. Before that, radio was blamed. Before that, telephones. Even before that, written works.

I'm aware that there's a thing going on...something about women, SJWs, journalism...but I have no idea what it's all about. I've just been playing my games like normal. I can't get on the eShop using my 3DS for some reason but that's about all. Maybe it's because I play single-player games, or maybe it's that I haven't played any games from 2014 (outside of Nintendo games)...Oh well, I really don't care.

---

"Gaming makes kids violent!" - I try not to step on bugs...I don't particularly care for other people but I wouldn't want to hurt any of you.

"Only little kids play video games...That's who their for!" - First, explain why GTA was made. Second, I see more kids playing with iPhones than game systems. Besides, no matter what you think of MovieBob I think we can all agree on his quote about growing up not being bad but growing OLD...ya know...being bad. I don't hear you complaining when I eat candy...I'm a grown-ass man, I do what I want.

"Gaming isn't art!!" - I don't really care, I'm trying to have fun...but hey, if gaming isn't art does that mean "Artists Shit," and "Piss Christ" aren't art either? I don't want to say anything unpopular but I don't want to live on the planet where those two things ARE considered art, but games like Metal Gear Solid, and Earthbound are not.

Honestly, none of them. Most of them are true from what I've seen. I know some people have expressed sadness over GamerGate ''ruining'' or ''tainting'' the image of gaming to outsiders, but from my experience gaming communities have always been toxic and hostile, long before GG, long before Anita, long before Jack Thompson even.

Speaking of Jack Thompson, when he got death threats and harassment for campaigning against games the games media thought it was funny. You'll be hard-pressed to find any articles on game sites decrying it. One wonders if that contributed to the current mess...

That the gaming community is warm and welcoming. It. Isn't. There are plenty of people who are warm and welcoming in the gaming community, but we've got a lot of twats clogging it up, making it a hostile place.

Christ I made a friend two nights ago because she off handily mentioned that she was a woman and someone else said "Huh, you don't see those that much," and I shot off a friend request to apologize for it. And she said she was used to it. And that really made me depressed.

Our community has a lot of assholes in it, and some people ignore it. Christ some people DEFEND it.

I'm... not really seeing how that's unwelcoming? I mean, if the guy (I'm assuming guy) who made the comment instead went "You're FEMALE? Eeewwwwww, get out of mah vidja, you fat *****!" well, yeah, that's obviously incredibly unwelcoming. A comment like "Huh, you don't see those much," though? Maybe it's tactless of him to say, but it's not really an unwelcoming sentiment. Maybe he really DOESN'T see them that much.

I apologize for not communicating it properly, but considering the context it was in, it just came off as pretty rude.

It's hazing, pure and simple. "I had to suffer because of my love for gaming; why should others get a free pass?" or "People used to bully me and put me down; now it's MY turn."
