What nerd crime are you guilty of?

I've noticed recently, that certain things in nerd culture, on the internet, come up repeatedly. There's certain things that annoy people. Entitlement. Judging another's "nerd status". Complaining about the friendzone. That kind of thing. And we're all guilty of at least one.

So, explain thyselves! Tell us what your guilty of, and why.

Well, I'm doclector, and I have a tendency to feel entitled.

This stretches beyond nerdness. I have a terrible habit of entitlement in almost every part of my life. If there is one part of me that has remained naive through years of cynicism building shittyness, it's the expectation of some kind of karma. Specifically, when I've had a shit day, I feel like I'm entitled to something good. Often, this will result in some rather silly financial decisions. Yeah, I shouldn't have bought doom 3 BFG edition for full whack when I knew damn well it was the sort of thing that was gonna come down in price quickly, but dammit, I had such a shitty week.

It becomes more of a problem involving people, though. If i ever screw people over or lie to them, you can be damn sure it's because I felt the universe owed me something in apology for a recent turn of events, and I wasn't prepared to give up my due cosmic reparations to help someone out or just to be polite. It's my day off/scheduled trip to a gloriously unhealthy restaurant/chance to relax for a little while, and dammit, I'm not letting someone take it from me.

Problem is, do I really deserve these things? No. Maybe I didn't deserve for things to turn to shit, but I only deserve something when I've accomplshed something, and more to the point, I can't expect the universe to magically give it to me like completing a zelda dungeon and coincidentally finding a new item.

Still, here I sit, victim of a shitty term and even more shitty past few days, feeling I deserve a pizza and a day off to play games, and I'm infuriated because I can't have it.

Not the kind of "nerd crimes" I was expecting. I thought more on the lines of putting a TMNT figure in a toy TARDIS.

I think I might actually be innocent, although I am afraid I don't know all the crimes that are involved in a "nerd crime".

Perhapes if I was given more examples I would be a little more clear on what a nerd crime is. I am innocent on the three examples you give though.

A nerd crime makes me think of two friends talking about something like...Spiderman, and one friend says to the other friend, "My favorite Spiderman villian is Sabertooth". Or would that be a geek crime? Ehhhhhh

**Edit, ahh it seems Quaxar thought the same thing as me!

***Edit, ok so apparently I am not innocent, I liked the Star Wars prequels. :) Thats a nerd crime right?

In Ocarina of Time I called Link my own name spelt backwards...

If you have a shitty day you are allowed to have pizza, it is practically a law of physics.

Alright, now look. We need some sort of consistancy here. First, nerds don't like to be outed and hated because they are nerds, and now you're outing each other on perceived crimes? Explain this one to me. Because it's really bad enough that people will call anyone a geek or a nerd without even knowing what that is, getting it wrong on people who just like to watch things and be entertained (like me). It gets rather annoying, you know. Here I am, Jane Goodall among the apes - so to speak - and I get roped in with them all because I ate a banana. Would you lot straighten this out please?

I dress up as Spidermod and take pictures....

I have essentially soiled the name of Spiderman.

Also I get a sudden rush of anger whenever someone doesn't get as excited about zombies as I do.

ZOMBEHS!

Does eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew while I play Halo count? Does that make me one of the shit-throwing-dudebro-fratboy-ape-jocks? Even though I'm a socially ostracized transwoman with an extensive collection of games dating back to the NES era, and so many random game-related collectibles that it's not even funny?

Also, I don't entirely hate the Star Wars prequels. I think Jango and his clones were pretty cool.

(looks on sadly)

There isn't anything I could do to you that you haven't already done to yourself.

Not only did I not entirely hate the Star Wars prequels, but I liked them. Is that a nerd crime? Ok I guess I'm not innocent.

I named Link Rick. When I was a kid I didn't understand "Link" was his real name. I figured Link meant like, "Fill in a proper name here".

...Fill in the missing link. So yeah, Rick defeated Ganon.

I'd like to think I've never committed a "nerd crime". I could care less about nerd status and if anything people who think highly of themselves for being e-celebs annoy me.

These are mostly crimes for the Thought Police, as they're mainly me disagreeing with the rants I find on the intertubes. Also, they're in ascending order in severity based on the ferocity I've seen in said rants.

I buy consoles based on the availability of the games I like instead of zealous loyalty.

When playing Pokemon, I do so casually without knowing or caring what EV or that other training method are.

I don't care whether or not Valve releases Half-Life 3.

I like Dragon Age 2 more than Origins.

I like Star Wars: The Old Republic.

I like the Star Wars prequels as much as the original trilogy.

I don't play videogames, maybe once or twice a year if there is something I like the look of or out of nostalgia but I wouldn't play games for other than for those reasons.

Does not liking Doctor Who (well no longer liked) count as a nerd crime or so far in my life I have not yet played a D&D tabletop game ever or never got into Warhammer?

Up until the this gen (ps3, xbox 360, wii) I wouldn't play a single FPS.
Borderlands and Dues Ex: HR changed that for me.

My biggest nerd crime is my hipster-esque attitudes about the video game industry. I'm the guy who tell anybody who will listen that the new payment models are destroying the encapsulated gaming experience that I liken to a quality movie. I'll see me friends playing COD and say "wow, I didn't know you guys were a bunch of bros," and then tell them about a unique game like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and talk at length about the series' history and why I boycott cookie-cutter game design.

I play every major release so I'm informed about the industry, even if only for a few hours, and when I'm too broke I'll pirate new games so I can be into it "before it was cool."

If someone mentions a specific game in passing, I'll usually go into the game's history and impact if they let me keep talking, and I'll try to steer a conversation that way if its not. I don't watch sports, so if people start talking athletics, I'll find a way to bring up that sport's recent video games.

If you don't buy into it, don't buy into it. There is no rhyme or reason to it beyond what the movement memetically decides to incorporate. I'm not really sure why people are so set on living by arbitrarily-determined guidelines (and why others aren't allowed to be a part of that and others are automatically assumed to already be) but that's human nature. They want to feel like they're part of something, and if 'doing what nerds do' helps them feel like they're not alone, well, that's fine. There might be some spillover into your life, but it's not that hard to ignore.
