I like Dragon Age 2 more than Origins and I think Fallout 3 and New Vegas are better than the original Fallouts.
Yeah, that's right. I'm a badass.

I don't see myself as a "nerd" constantly under siege by the "jocks" of the world and I think having that world view is a bit silly. I would go even further to say that a lot of things about "nerd culture" seem incredibly distasteful and repulsive.

I don't like Doctor Who, it seems like poor sci-fi to me. All to often it is just about watching a "space magician". Which is fine and actors like Tenant are watchable, but it's not what I look for in a sci-fi

I don't like Joss Whedon. I think he's skilled but not my cup of tea. He's a bit too smart for me, his characters all seeming to possess this bland air of smugness, they don't seem to be human but prompts for punch lines.

I don't like Star Trek, it seems to be less about creating a functioning universe and more about aesops. How does a mobster planet function on a day to day basis?

I never really liked the Transformers, but can watch the first Bayformers. Transformers was always stupidly hammy and silly, but at least with the Bayformers I can root for the military.

MMOs aren't my cup of tea.

I sorta like the Big Bang Theory. It's very hit and miss.

In fantasy/sci-fi games, if I have a choice, I will be a human everytime. I'm a massive unrepentant racist towards things like orcs or elves.

I don't think Japan is a land of milk and honey. Nor does it primarily export tentacle rape and jrpgs.

EA/Activision are not evil, but instead make decisions I don't agree with.

None of the things in this thread are bad. None of these things are crimes. My god, this only further proves that the one thing nerds are good at is excluding people. They are the bullies that they grew up with. We have to learn that people like things, and people like to identify with groups that make them feel like they belong! We cannot judge people for wanting to belong! We can't judge people for their opinions! No opinion is wrong, no opinion is less valid than any other. Being a "nerd" is great for belonging to a community but that community needs to do all it can to include everyone. Otherwise we end up with "console wars," more and more phobia and sexism. It will become the very thing it sought to escape!

Also, if you like the Star Wars prequels you're a big fat stupid-head.

I had about as much fun with that movie as I'd have with sticking razor blades in my ass. That said, to each his own.

As to the OP: I've never seen Firefly. I didn't really enjoy half-life. I got bored with Portal. I still find some old memes funny. Go ahead. Poke me with your pitchforks.
You should definitely check out firefly when you get a chance. Very fun.

Speaking of FUN: I understand that one person may not find a movie as fun as another person, but think about it: Racing through a jungle in kubelwagons while the 1950 winner of the Ms. Ukraine pageant is sword fighting your son in the back seat, seeing giant f***ing ants devour your enemies, dodging traps in a gold-encrusted temple built by effing aliens -- does that not sound fun to you?

On paper I guess. The execution didn't work for some, and I get that, but Indiana Jones movies have rarely lacked in the fun department, and I can think of an analogy more pleasant than razor blades and rectums. Like eating a grilled cheese sandwich made by Emerill Lagase. Yeah, he's an obnoxious celebrity chef and you could probably cop for a better meal than a grilled cheese, but it still tastes good. It's grilled cheese, c'mon.

It's always fun to see someone make a good point and then invalidate it IMMEDIATELY afterwards for the sake of humor.

Whether you meant it as a joke or not, I do get sick and tired of people telling me I'm wrong for liking the prequels. I liked the older series better, yes, but there were good things about the new ones. I used to say that, in the end, it's just a movie, but I get that Star Wars is more than that. But ask a child who was born in the late 1990's or early 2000's which star wars trilogy they liked better. I GUANRANTEE you half of them would pick I-III. So, just because they didn't have the privilege of being born before 1995 and didn't experience the first films automatically means they're wrong and we should ridicule for liking what they like?

It's true, we have become the bullies, and your little quip there proves you're one of them.

Sorry, Yahtzee. I've played Uncharted 1 and 2 and I like Nathan Drake's character. I think he's charming and relatable.

I'm being sarcastic, man. Really, really sarcastic. I like Episode 3. Really, I do! I'm also a film student though, and there are parts of the prequels that really piss me off so much as the writing, pacing, characterization, and production elements go, but like you said - punters on the street wouldn't care for that. And as a punter, those films provide some decent, fun, flashy action with a reasonable amount of nostalgia added in as a bonus. Plus the Emperor is all kinds of awesome in ANY film he's in, Episode 3 no exception.

I'm sorry I offended you, but I would have thought immediately following up "don't pick on people's opinions" with the term "stupid-head" would PROBABLY not fly over anyone's head as a sarcastic, quasi-ironic quip. I will rectify it - if you like the Star Wars prequels, you're just a person who has an opinion, just like all of us.

But your opinion is wrong no bad Andy stahp it it didn't work the first time

Edit: ...no, in all seriousness, I don't think people who saw the prequels first who like the prequels better are wrong. Or people who like the prequels at all are wrong. That would be a pathetic grudge to harbour. I don't like the prequels from a purely academic standpoint - and people who argue for the artistic credibility of the prequels as far as their writing goes will probably get called "stupid" by me at some point, depending on the holes in their logic - but look, yeah, I don't think anyone who likes a thing is a worse person or a stupider person or anything.

It's just I'm also a fan of ironic humour, and I wanted to pad out the intense seriousness of my point with something a little lighter, self-mocking even. I never thought it would be taken seriously, but I understand why people would be upset by people making a broad generalization about people who like a series of films. It would be terribly upsetting if people thought you were dumb for it. Probably seeing it even as a joke would get a rise out of you. ...so, yeah, for what it's worth, I'm sorry. Just for the record, it's certainly not the opinion I hold at all. As a person. As a film student, I'll gladly argue the merits of its storytelling and if you come to me saying Qui-gon Jinn is a compelling protagonist I'll berate you until you comply. Probably.

I don't really see that analogy working. I like grilled cheese, and I like the way Emeril says "BAM". Conversely, I hated that movie. Well, I guess hate is actually too strong a word, really. It was fairly inoffensive. And yeah, the analogy was intended to be hyperbolic, but I definitely didn't come anywhere near enjoying the film. Given the opportunity, I'd gladly remove it from the annals of cinema history.

You're right about the execution though. The whole thing was incredibly ridiculous while simultaneously feeling tired, rote and mundane. On paper, I could see it being a pretty fun film, but ultimately it ending up being a washed out farce, with heavy CGI that felt as uninspired as the actors. It came off as more depressing than anything else. I'd say for me it was like eating a loaf of white wonder bread. It doesn't taste "Bad" per se (though I don't really like it), but after that many empty carbs you just ending up feeling shitty and lethargic by the time you're done.

Oh, so many.

I don't like comic books. I like comics characters and comics plots well enough if they're in some other format-- book, or movie-- I just can't get into the comics medium. I find the way people are drawn to be frequently ridiculous and I CAN'T deal with the random EMPHASIS of WORDS. Just not my bag.

I can't stand Joss Whedon's original stuff (I would have said "I can't stand Joss Whedon's stuff" period, except oddly for it being comics and being Whedon, I actually loved Avengers), and if I see one more tiny barefoot badass girl in anything of his, I'm going to scream. Joss, I don't want to know what gets you off, I really don't. I want everyone to stop evangelizing Buffy to me. I've actually found people evangelizing for Jesus to be less annoying and considerably less intrusive than the Buffy stans. I watched it. I didn't like it.

I can't stand Neil Gaiman, full stop.

I can actually tolerate Jar-Jar Binks. Anything that annoys stick-up-the-ass Qui-gon that much is okay in my book. Also, the "all sinkin and no power? When are yousa thinking wesa in trouble?" and the line to Padme about worrying about the Gungan army are two of the more sensible things said by anyone in the entire movie. Jar-Jar irritated me infinitely less than the Ewoks did. And the Gungan city was gorgeous.

OTOH, I want to strangle Yoda's obnoxious muppet ass and boot him out the nearest airlock. "Do or do not, there is no try" and that horrid, pompous lecture on fear leading to suffering that he gave a nine-year-old kid who misses his mother were two of the *least* sensible things said in any Star Wars movie. I still don't understand why the populace as a whole tolerates the Jedi, tbh. Religious cult being given extrajudicial powers without oversight, there's a smart governance move! Not.

I actually liked the NJO. A lot. "Traitor" is one of the best spinoff books I've ever read.

There... I think that's enough pissing on sacred cows for one day.

I consciously try to avoid those "crimes." I've come to dislike nerds because of them, in fact. Growing up, nerds were the not very noticed, and sometime abused, kids but everybody thought they could and would do better. Now nerds are more mainstream, but so many of them are complete assholes that it just sickens me. I'm a nerd and I have been for most of my life, but I'm no longer comforted by that fact. Now when people see what I like to do with my time, I have to make an extra effort to not be a dick about it like being a nerd somehow makes me better than people who like to go outside or drive custom cars or shoot guns or whatever. And I can't even pretend to be an elitist about it as a joke because they immediately assume I'm serious, and then I have to backpedal away from that. Nerds have ruined nerd culture, but looking back, I should have realized they were destined too.

Fuck you, nerds. You suck.

Oh wow, thanks for not jumping down my throat! The last person who I said "sorry, I was being sarcastic" too, said I was just lying to look better. Even though I complete agreed with them, I couldn't get on their good side. They kept thinking I was just lying to look good! I have no imperative to lie in this situation. I completely agree with you. No dice. So it's nice to find reasonable people still exist on the internet.

I completely understand how annoying film students can get. I got looked down on for liking The Avengers. The Avengers! Of all things! Sucks.

As for what film school I attended? Eh, not really a film school. It was a Certificate of Film and Screen at a technical college. :p

No Sir. As an Englishman you are required by law to wonder why Americans get so *excited* about Dr. Who,
and why we think that having watched a few episodes gives us tremendous insight into your country/culture.
(Been a tremendous Dr. Who nerd/geek/fan since it was first shown in Colorado in the early 1980's)

I like some others in this thread have anime figures in my room. Worst related moment was when watching
Densha Otoko in anime club everyone wondered why I suddenly put my head down. I pointed out the Ayanami
figure prominent in the middle of his room, and everyone who had been in my room laughed as they realized
that I had the same figure.

I refer to myself as a Brony, though I now add the qualifier "Depending on what that means to you".

I have engaged in lengthy "who'd win" debates, up to and including what fictional countries/kingdoms
could trounce each other.

I uttered and stand by the statement "And you can't rule out that one-on-one Celestia would
wreck Sauron's @^*%".
And it is a sad fact that probably everyone reading this thread can totally envisage the
conversation that led to that one.
