[HEADING=2]What non-essential future technology are you looking forward to?[/HEADING]

Good evening fellow Escapists, it's been a while. In these dark days it's always an escape to look into the future and wonder about what developments may come next. Today I'm asking not about vital technologies that will save lives or change the world, but those which are purely whimsical but would be fun to have around, like VR gaming or such. What non-essential technologies do you hope to see your in your life time?

Myself, something I've been thinking about is lab-grown meat. At the moment we're rather limited in our consumption habits by animals which have been domesticated and are efficient, i.e. your usual cows, pigs, chickens etc. Many other animals are eaten of course but in rarer quantities due to lack of supply. On a cellular level there isn't much difference though, so when lab-grown meat is finally cracked it shouldn't be much harder to grow whale steaks or zebra burgers than your ordinary livestock-based meets. How cool will that be, to have so much more choice in our meats?

I want playdough that never dries out. And none of that stuff that says it never dries out but then goes and dries out if you leave it out over night because they really meant it never dries in the container. It needs to be the god damn genuine article you know?

My god.

You could have a printer that printed bacon.

What am I looking forward to?

Self cleaning, self repairing socks because to hell with buying socks.

wheelchair jetpacks.

Because when I'm old enough that I require I wheelchair, I expect that baby to be airborne (actually with the advances in robotics we could add mechanical limbs, internal power supplies, medical life support, kevlar plating and BOOM! we'll be the first generation of real human dreadnoughts)

I'm here for my pension please.

Now we only have 50 years to pick our colour schemes, so choose well...

Some day I would loved to see a fully operational mech. It doesn't have to be militery, I'm picturing something like a heavy loader from Alien like it is use for space operation.

I wouldn't mind a little droid that would fly around behind you and play a theme tune as you walked. It would also be nice to have a little gelatinous orb of plant life that you could throw into an open field to grow a small grove of trees in a matter of a few seconds - sort of like the forest miracle from Black & White.

Dreamscape machines. Get in at night, turn it on, boom, you get to be a God in your head for about 8 hours.

Naturally this may or may not result in further excuses to sleep in.

Anything that let's me get out of freaking driving damn it!

Teleporter. Self-driving cars. Personal little helicopters (I suppose I'd have to fly it but that would be a lot quicker so it's acceptable). A genetically modified chimp that has a hat and a cigar and tells jokes while he chauffeurs you around.

Whatever it is, I just want to stop having to drive through freaking traffic...

Full-dive virtual reality, or in the vein if what someone else mentioned, full-dive dream manipulation. Watching .hack and SAO has not changed my desire for these things :3

You know, funny thing: A few years ago, I was a member of another forum that was filled to the brim with idiots and uninformed teenage girls who think they're better than you. (I was a stupid teenager, alright? God knows what reason I had to join that cesspit) I remember an anti-meat eating thread there where a vegetarian claimed all meat-eaters are evil monsters or some shit, and one person actually mentioned the possibilities of lab-grown meat: A solution which would be easier on the environment as well as kinder to the animals. The response? "Well, meat-eaters won't eat it because it's not authentic and hasn't involved the pain of an animal!" Like we eat meat just to be evil. I laughed.

Anyway, I absolutely agree about the lab-grown meat.

Flying cars. Depending on how they're fueled, they could even allow for international travel. Might be a nightmare for border control but who cares? I get to fly to New York on a whim!

Animal uplifting. I want to be best friends with a talking fruit bat.

Or I suppose just extreme, dubiously-practical feats of genetic modification in general. I wouldn't mind a pet jumping spider the size of a rabbit, or maybe a giant land sea pig [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotoplanes] that I could ride around town on a saddle (I would name it Pudge). The sky's the limit when you're mercilessly playing God with the very building blocks of life.

Really good cosplay. That allows you to flawlessly recreate pop videos in your own basement.

I was thinking more of a cloaking exoskeleton you could wear that can replicate what another person or being (real or fiction) would looks like... But, that works too... (especially if we're thinking of overall practicality, I guess...)
