What parts of a game do you prefer to be realistic?

I prefer realistic physics. I hate the bits in Halo where you have the 23-hr a day player jump over your head and assassinate you every time you find him. It's partially why I liked Red Faction: Guerrilla because the building destruction physics where (generally) very impressive. However it did mess that up a bit by giving you a ridiculously high jump.

If a game is obviously not trying to be realistic because its more fun that way, then it works (TF2), but sometimes too much realism hampers the gameplay.

To me it has to be the characters, them responding to the situation appropriately. To have someone yell "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIIIIIIGHT!" just really ruins it for me.
dunno about that one (the dante situation) ... i can't type much coz i'm on the PS3 .. but study Dante as a character and the circumstances .. it fits well ... don't forget mundus created her a specific way just to fuck with him ... and don't forget the memories from the relationship with vergil
I've never actually played the game, I've just seen that clip on youtube. That just seems like a really stupid thing to say when someone's died. The only context it could work is a parody I feel.

Physics for the most part, unless there is a reason why the physics are screwed up (takes place in a different universe or something like that).

Technology has to be realistic (in my opinion), as well as characters. These are THE two most important things.

I hate massive four-barreled rocket launchers, nuke guns, plasma grenades, etc. And I hate the way that all women in games have model figures, massive (often unrealistically) breasts and a sassy attitute. I also hate the way that all males have overflowing muscles and the need for a lozenger.

And that quote about the bullet doing the damage is right. Who cares about an advanced rifle that fires flaming, explosive-tipped, guided, tracer-chainsaw munitions when the enemy loses a single bar of health upon impact?

I always hated the way how people die instantly from non-lethal shots.

Sure you'll die from a shot through the chest. Chances are it'll take until you bleed out.
actually it's not uncommon for bullets to deflect off bones or travelling along muscle, hitting vital organs and killing instantly ... getting shot in the foot could potentially instantly kill you .. matter of fact, it's happened more than once

Wouldn't this depend entirely on the calibre and nature of the bullet?
I just hate the way there is more 'random' chance involved with firing the bullets the there is with damage from shots.
caliber only raise and decrease chances .. the threat always exists ... the smallest chances are with hollow point rounds .. police use HP rounds .. they're kinda like the condom of the bullet world

and yeah .. not much much is predictable when dealing with some major physics and something as complex as the human anatomy .. too many variables

Health!
That's why i hate halo... You could shoot 50 rounds into someone with the assault rifle and he still wont die.

Physics, especially outer space physics and underwater physics. Boom Blox is pretty good for that sort of stuff.

No parts.

Seriously, I want game developers to abandon all ideas of realism in video games. Think of it this way; every game ever created, from hopscotch to Halo 3, has had us play as a role. In that sense, every game is a "role-playing game"; we give ourselves a new identity, and we have fun with it.

As time progressed, we learned that games are a lot more fun when roles are more supernatural. That's how comic books began, that's how movies began, and that's how video games began. By making games realistic in any way, shape or fashion, we neglect our evolution.

For in the end, what purpose does our new and advanced technology have if it only serves to make a character walk the same way we do?

1000th post! Yay!

oh hell yeah i agree, sometimes total grindcore realism should be left at the door, while things like "foot shots don't instantly kill you" is best .. i call this "gaming realism" ... as in it's not down to the T ... just realistic enough for you to go WOW and still have fun

I like only a LITTLE realism in my game. That's why GTAIV dissapointed the fuck out of me. Some realism is good but too much can throw it off balance with the fun factor. Falling 6 feet and being hospitolized is NOT fun.
