Any mention of logical fallacies.

Fallacies completely undermine any attempt at a meaningful discussion. Logical fallacies should not be tolerated - pointing them out is the right thing to do. Most people probably don't even realize they are doing it, and it makes us all dumber if we accept them.

I mean really. How do you suggest dealing with a logical fallacy if not by calling it out? You can't argue their point, that's setting yourself up to fail. You can't ignore the argument because that makes it seem like it's such a good point that you don't have an answer for it. It might be annoying, but it's necessary because fallacies are so prevalent.
This exactly. I may be tired of people constantly talking about sexism, but that doesn't mean I'm going to whine when someone points it out. It's not like fallacies should be suddenly viewed as acceptable debate practice if they becomes prevalent enough. If people are tired of hearing about them, then perhaps they should encourage others to stop utilizing them.

I hate topics involving sports, politics or feminism.
Also, due to insane crap happening in my country, I stop caring when someone utters the words "plane" and "Smolensk" in the same sentence.

Easy one. Anyone who decides that his version of political correctness, racism, sexism, what ever ism is the only correct one. Hell going through this thread made me wanna block about 7 people who think they are the be all and end all.

I don't even give a damn if someone is racist. All humans are to some degree against some group. Anyone who sayds they aren't... is lying thorugh their teeth.

Am I racist? Yes. Do I admit that? yes. Do I try to fix it, yes. I actually go and make friends and aquantainces with the various groups I have various predjudices against to try and overcome them. Rather hard really. Funny how you dont know your own racist believes till you try and deal with them.

Does that make you better than me? No and go fuck yourdself for thinking you are.

"I'm not a racist, but..."

Nothing ever good ever comes after that statement.
"I'm not a racist, but yellow is a superior color to blue. You know it to be true in your heart." - an actual statement made to me

OT: "So I was at the bar last night, when..." Oh goody. More stupid stories about people being drunk. Heard one, heard them all. No, I DON'T want to go to the bar with you tonight. Your story has not enticed me, it's made me consider invading the bar in the late morning and hanging crosses all over while smearing "The Power Of Christ Compels You" in blood on the walls. Wait, you did WHAT to the midget in the corner? You, the dude talking to me. Stahp.

Sports is probably the biggest one for me. No, I did not catch "the game" last night. No, I don't know who played. No, I do not care as to whether or not a bunch of people I don't know succeeded in tossing a ball around. I really don't. Why are we still having this conversation and why must you always bring it up.

For that matter, I hate when people start talking about a TV show, movie, game, whatever and just automatically assume you've seen/played it. Like "Man, wasn't that episode of Tosh.O last night so funny?" What the fuck is a Tosho? That show on Comedy Central? No, I did not see it, nor do I really want to. I understand you want to find common ground, but there's better ways to go about it.

"No offense, but *insert offensive sentence here*"

Seriously, it annoys me to no end!

I also agree on the whole "As a *insert profession here*" Thing...

It's just your opinion, no need to state such a thing.
Wait , added your profession SHOULD make their opinion more valid , assuming that the topic is somethinf related to said profession . I mean i rather have medical advice from a doctor than a carpenter ....

OT: Someone once told me : " If you want to stay friends with someone , avoid talking about religion and politics" . So i avoid those topics alltogether . Also , "i'm not racist but..." makes me lose all interest in the person. Periode . I have 0 tolerence for racism of any kind .
Dude..."I'm not racist, but" HAS legitimate applications.
I'm not racist, for instance, but sometimes you just have to comment on stuff like black people and their mysterious love of fried chicken.

I had a roommate named Denzel for a couple years. Most stereotypical black guy you can possible imagine, with the exception of his odd flamboyant personality. I KID YOU NOT, he kept our fridge stocked with orange soda, "purple drink" (which I did not know was a thing until then), and watermelon.... and the kitchen counter almost ALWAYS had an empty KFC bucket sitting on it. Dude woke up in the morning blaring gospel music, listened to rap during the day, and switched to R&B at night.
Some days I wonder if Denzel was just messing with us (his 2 white and 1 middle-eastern roommates), but there's no way someone would keep that up for 2 years, right?

In my Game Design class we were talking about having a party the last week of school. The professor was all "we could get some pizza!" the class-clown dude was like "HELL YEA, and we'll get some hookers and blow and PAAAAARTAY!"(completely joking, obviously), and then a black dude in the back of the class goes "Oh shit, man! Can we get some fried chicken up in here too?!"(he was dead serious) The whole class just missed a beat and then burst out laughing. Poor dude look confused for a minute til he realized what he'd said.

How do you explain that?

So, "I'm not racist, but dude...black people seem to love them some fried chicken."

Sometimes it's a legit phrase.
Thank you for doing the exact thing that annoys me so . I no longer consider you are able to contibute anything positive to my stay here at the escapists , and thus you shall go on my ignore list . Your friend is the exact reason i don't associate myself with most black males, they make us look bad . Yes , us . Not only did you manage to annoy me , but you managed to offend me at the same time . You're 2/2 , here have a cookie. I hope you friend ends up where black males "stereotipically" end up . Shot or in jail . I'm not racist but...
LOL way to propagate a stereotype. He wasn't trying to upset you or offend you. He was mentioning a humorous anecdote and was simply using a person of African-American descent and their mysterious predilection towards deep fried avian critters and you decided to block him and make a post about how he offended you? At what point do you realize this isn't productive behavior?

People say white Americans are fat and coast on the backs of migrant workers. As a skinny white male who has worked 2 jobs every day for years before I decided to become a stay at home dad for my daughter, i don't embody any stereotype. Do i laugh at them? Sure do. Ignorance is hilarious. Especially bigoted ignorance. He never said the N word. Never called YOU out personally for liking or disliking deep fried avian critters, so how did he offend YOU? I really don't get people sometimes...

Elitists. People that think certain games or activities should only belong to them and their kin. STOP IT

Fanboys. Honestly, i'm so sick of the pc vs console crowd in this particular instance. PC is better, NO Console is better. Why don't you play what you like and live and let live?

MMO Fanatics. We get it. Some people like WoW. Some like SWToR. Some like GW2, some like Everquest! Why does it offend you if someone doesn't like what you like? It makes no bloody sense. So x person hates mmo y. BIG. FREAKING. DEAL.

Whenever someone uses the term PC Master Race. It's not humorous anymore, nor is it funny.

Religion. It is just not a topic I really like talking about and get really riled up when someone tries to force the topic upon me. It does not matter if it is Christians, Jews, or Atheists. I do not want to talk about it.

For me, it would have to be discussing Porn or sex. Call me old fashioned, but I really think less of a person when they just casually discuss that sort of thing. It's not a topic I'm exactly "comfortable" with, and in my opinion it just reinforces this idea of men being sex crazed maniacs or something.
My usual problem with such conversations is that they're just boring. I mean, most people talk about it as if they were doing apartment rearrangement. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IKEAErotica]

Sports and music

I pay no attention to any professional sporting events, and, although I do enjoy music, I am not very knowledgeable in any area of music and I don't know the names of many of the songs I enjoy or the bands that pay them.

unfortunately, those are very common things for people to bond over so it sort of handicaps my social skills : \

Usually it's either some variation of "lost my faith in humanity" or "I'm so random".

For the former it's almost always abused by egotistical twats to the point of having no meaning, and usually over something that is (in the grand scheme of things) pretty minor. Unless you're having a religious or existential crisis, I don't see how a university banning the image of a NES Zapper from a club's poster or a television program about Italian-Americans in a beach house being renewed merits that response. Please stop casually damning your entire species stretching back to its very foundation over it.

For the later, it's the pretense of being unique and edgy derived from the heavily premeditated use of words, actions, and appearances. I find their calculated inconsistencies and verbal penchant for mainstream geek culture neither endearing nor engaging. When I have to slog through paragraphs of people tYPinG LiEk ThiS or name dropping Invander Zim and Waffles as if their computer had tourettes, I immediately lose interest in any point they were trying to make and any future points they might try to convey (like the thrumming of a lawnmower in the background, they just become ambient noise).

Anything religious. I never force my atheist views on others. (or try really hard not to, anyway.) But as soon as someone starts this shit I'm out.
My only interest in such things are from a mythological point of view.
Ya, the moment I hear someone start citing a bible passage to back up an argument I do a mental facepalm. And I'm a Catholic.
Whether or not the Bible is actually a holy text you can't base an argument completely on the unfounded and unproven assumption that it is, especially if your arguing against someone who doesn't share that belief.
It's like saying "evolution must be true because it says so in the Origin of Species". A book by itself isn't evidence, it's just a person's words, heresay. You have to go beyond that and argue actual proven facts and your own deduced logic if you want to make a compelling argument.

Anyone that needs to identify the camp they've assigned themselves to before giving their opinion, and anything related to race. Most things related to politics or religion are a good way to make me opt out, as well, not because of my own stances, but because they're two areas people tend to be at their most condescending, fanatical, and unreasonable.

"Dumbed down". Usually accompanied by "for consoles", but not always. I'm sorry, but I have no interest in beginning or continuing a conversation with somebody who feels the need to insinuate that people who play console games, or even just modern games as I've occasionally seen, are stupider than people who can't enjoy anything less complex than Baldur's Gate, and will adamantly state that they think Baldur's Gate is too simple for them anyway.

I can think of any number of situations were bringing up a logical fallacy in a persons philosophy or argument would be a real point. Care to be specific?

The point is that logical fallacies are not valid arguments.

It's one of the reasons i try to avoid discussing communism since most people can't argue without using fallacies against it.

I'd actually love to be called on every time I made a logical fallacy, it's an interesting subject for me.

edit. wait, are you saying you hate when people remember others that they used logical fallacies or that you hate when they use logical fallacies?
I feel he is probably referring to the fallacy fallacy. ie. You used a fallacy, therefore I win the argument. That is one of the more annoying artefacts of discussion forums.

But I do agree in principle that fallacies have to be addressed.

Anytime someone talks about celebrities or actors, I immediately lose all interest in the conversation.
