I have to mention the original Grandia. Cartoony JRPG, light-hearted but HUGE, and surprisingly immersive. The music is amazing, and the battle system is still hailed as pure genius. This is my personal favourite game of all time.

Also, Legend of Dragoon. Somewhat more serious JRPG, with plot twists out of a soap opera and a rich, diverse cast of playable characters. Some parts of this game will feel more technologically advanced than others, the result of a development process spanning more than three years. It has also recieved some criticism for "borrowing" heavily from similar games. As a whole, however, LoD stands proudly on its own, providing a unique journey through a unique world - and with four discs, you'll get a LOT of game for your money!

Platform-wise, I hereby support everybody who has suggested the Spyro trilogy before me. This is platforming bliss, as good as it gets. DEFINITELY buy the Spyro trilogy.

As for Crash Bandicoot: You really can't go far wrong. Crash and Spyro were pretty much tied for the position of "official PlayStation mascot" for most of the PS1 era, and I don't think there ever was a clear winner. While I personally prefer Spyro, for no reason I can really put my finger on, I have to say that "Crash 3: Warped" is an absolutely fantastic game which anybody with a PS1 and a pulse needs to own.

Honestly everyone has the big ones covered. Only things I might add would be the Fear Effects, Clock Tower, and Wild Arms.

Oh, and I don't think I've seen Parasite Eve 1&2 mentioned.

My biggest suggestion would be to mod that sucker so it can swap discs (doesn't cost much, doesn't endanger the hardware). Once I did that I just started burning everything I could think of, and really that's the only way to play some games such as the trippy Japanese exclusive LSD: The Dream Emulator.

I'm not huge on racing games, though everything else is fair game
Legend of the Dragoon. Honestly one of the better RPGS i played on my PS1

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Seriously i still have a copy for the PC sitting in my game shelf. I bust it out when i want to remember how awesome that game is.

Crash Bandicoot. The first one was the first game i dedicated a few hours to when i first got my PS1.

Final Fantasy 8. Screw 7. Its been done to death. It was a good game before the rabid fan base demanded HD Remakes and sequels. Cloud as a protagonist is annoying. He complains, fails to protect his client and then goes all RAWR on Sephiroth in a vain attempt to be a hero. 8 was awesome. Had a good story, memorable characters and the ending was beautiful.

The Classic PS1 Spyro Trilogy. Spyro the dragon, Ripto's Rage, and Year of the Dragon.
The Classic PS1 Crash bandicoot games. Crash Bandicoot 1, 2 and 3 are 3d Platformers, Crash Team Racing is a Mario Kart-esque racer. Crash Bash is sort of a minigame based party game.
Megaman legends 1 and 2. They speak for themselves. You'll quickly realize why we're so pissed at Capcom for caning legends 3.
Ape Escape - Make sure you have a dual shock controller for this one. It's well worth it though.
Tomba - It's an adventuring platform game, a really good one.
Both Oddworld games - sick sense of humor, but by god is it good.

Sheesh, all the good ones are taken. You know what? *points up at the thread* Get aaaaaaaaaall of that.

what's everyone's opinion on Crash Bandicoot?
The Crash Bandicoot games on the Playstation 1 are the best the series ever was. Get them, and pay homage to what Crash used to be.

I wanna throw in my votes for every Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon game there, as well as FF7, 8 and 9.

I don't think anyone has mentioned FF6 which makes me sad - get it, its amazing!

About the only things I can think of that haven't been mentioned directly are Final Fantasy Anthology and Final Fantasy Chronicles, which will net you re-releases of Final Fantasies 4, 5, and 6 as well as Chrono Trigger

But yeah, everything else mentioned.

Too bad you're not into racing, there are a lot of good ones on the PS1.

If you can find a CRT and Guncons Point Blank is pretty great! Lots of great mentions here, like Chrono Cross and Tenchu. Let's face it, there are so many great games for this console it's be nuts to try and list them all. Castlevania, Jet Moto 2, Twisted Metal 2 (and only 2!), and obscure one I liked was Board Game Top Shop, it was basically Monopoly but instead of a board representing a city it was about a mall with shops. Fun with friends.

Gex

Gex 3: Enter the Gecko.

Other than those two, I believe my fellow escapists have listed most the ones you should get.

I highly recommend these games:

RPG/Adventure: Legend of Mana, Suikoden 2, Thousand Arms, Valkyrie Profile, Breath of Fire 3

Action: Twisted Metal 2, Herc's Adventure, Oddworld (action puzzle more of), Future Cop LAPD

Fighting: Bushido Blade

Monster Raising: Dragon Seed

Most of these games I recommend because either there isn't anything like it on current gen stuff or it still holds up despite its dated graphics. Some of these 2D games visuals, like Legend of Mana, Suikoden 2, and Oddworld, are gorgeous and still comparable to some current gen stuff, which is a really impressive feat.

I'd really like to recommend the Tench series as well but the PS2 versions are way better.

Chrono Cross (so much yes, the setting and music alone makes it a must.)
Dino Crisis 1/2
Final Fantasy 7/8/9/

Wild ARMS
Harvest Moon (both of them)
Odd World 1/2/3
Front Mission 3
Silent Hill 1 and 2 (Hell yes, they are epic!)
Medieval 1 and 2

The rest posted as well. There is just so much to list.
