Nothing will ever restore my faith in humanity. In fact, there is nothing to restore since I've always hated humanity. That said, I do like som humans. But humanity as a whole should be destroyed. With fire.

The Diary of Anne Frank. It makes me proud to know that even within a world full of the fear of being found, the flower of creativity and humanity could still grow and thrive.

Knowing that she endured horrible circumstances and was still able to be optimistic makes me look at my own demons with more strength.

[sub][sub]Even more impressive is the power of her words after her death. The Nazis tried to crush imagination but they couldn't break her spirit.[/sub][/sub]

I've never really lost my faith in humanity. I think at some point, it's all going to get so shit, that we'll have to change and do some good. Then again I am the eternal optimist and can find something good about anything. Like stepping in dogshit. At least it wasn't a beartrap, then I'd be really screwed.

A while back there was a story of a dad who pulled his child up into his arms so that he would take the entire blow a car coming towards them.

There are lots of good people out there, the stupid ones just seems to get more coverage for some reason.

But if you stepped in a beartrap you'd be glad it wasn't a land mine.

Optimism for the win!

The best way I have to restore my faith in humanity is to turn off the computer and stop listening to the media.

But it's the little things, really. A soft touch from a cute girl, a kind word from a stranger, a friendly smile. There's a lot of good out there, but good doesn't sell crap I don't need or incite me to the sort of fear that politicians need to exploit me for my vote.

To that I say "fuck you" to marketing executives and anyone holding or running for public office. The world is better off without you and I have plenty of faith in the basic decency of my fellow man without you to undermine it.

This.

Also, sourdough pretzels. They help me get my spirit back.

Thank you for this. I'm going to have to bookmark that.

My own answer: Science. Despite it not being specifically about science, this sums it up best:

Nothing. Not because I've completely lost faith in humanity, nor because I've yet to lose it. The concept of having faith in a constantly evolving and fluid global population is somewhat silly. People are too complicated to be labeled merely as 'good' and 'bad'. There's always motives to look at, past events that drive people to do good or bad, both of which are subjective terms.
Mmm...less pretentiously esoterically, I'm a huge optimist. I believe that 90% of the bad shit that people perpetrate is because of the incredible complexity of modern society causing massive stress and friction between people. Humans are no more naturally violent than any other creature: in our hunter/gatherer days, people only fought when they settled down in a permanent settlement. So while our modern society has bountiful rewards and benefits, it also has the downside of causing conflict. That's my opinion, anyway.

Theres a lot of really nice staff and customers that frequent the shop where I work. Kindness and humour generally is what does it for me. Having said that you dont get that at anything beyond individual levels so I can see your point, but its too cynical to just write off the entire species like that....

Think about yourself and your family man, they cant be that bad
Oh don't worry about me, although I have largely put family life in the doghouse by choice, and although I have lost faith in humanity I still take pleasure and try to perceiver in my own life.

Still, from this thread it's nice to see I'm not alone, Wayward Man is not so wayward. o_O

DOES NOT COMPUTE.

But I don't let isolated incidents send me into a big drama queen "oh woe is the world" fit.

*nod* I'm sincerely glad to have helped you have a better day. Some may consider it sappy, but I think that's what the world should really be about.

Many thanks to the OP. Bringing about goodness in the world is a valued and spiff thing.
