I got given some eb games vouchers the other day and I'm in the mood for a good fantasy RPG, I was thinking:

-The Witcher 2 (havent played the first one but I hear the second ones much better.. and it does look like alot of fun)

-Dragon Age 2 (briefly played the first one but couldn't get into it because I found the combat uninteresting)

-Dark Souls (I've been eyeing that up for quite some time but im not sure..I know the Witcher 2 isn't a cakewalk but I can see myself just throwing down the controller and not touching it for like 3 months..Is it really that fun?)

-Dragons Dogma maybe?

-Any other suggestions? I've already got skyrim and oblivion and I enjoyed those immensely.

I'm leaning towards the Witcher 2 but I'm unsure if you'll need to play through the first to understand it

Edit: I'm on 360 btw, thanks guys
Edit again: just realized I screwed up and put this in off-topic discussion, sorry bout' that

Witcher 2. It's fantastic.

You don't need to have played through the first one. There's a youtube video that will summarize the plot from the first game for you in about 5 minutes. I believe CD Projekt themselves did it, it's nicely put together.

Dragon age 2 is basically Dragon age 1 with slightly more exciting combat, plus its so last year.

heard good things about Dragon's Dogman though

Really I think any game you pick is gonna have its downsides in one way or another. LISTEN TO YOUR HEART.

Even though you are on 360, any PC can run Baldurs gate.

GET IT NOW, SO, I, DECREE!

If anyone says "The Legend of Zelda"...

Get off this site. RIGHT NOW.

Anyway, I would recommend Nintendo's Fire Emblem series. It's a really good battle strategy RPG franchise.

DO NOT pick up Dragon Age 2. The combat is terrible, the story is scattered and uninteresting, the characters (for the most part) are bland and boring. The game is atrocious, if you are planning on playing a Dragon Age game, gather your strength and try Dragon Age 1 again.

If I were you I'd pick up Dark Souls or Witcher 2. I played both and the twisted and dark setting of Dark Souls I preffered to Witcer 2.

I really would recommend Dark Souls. I'm not doing it to be all hipster gamer and be like "Games nowadays just have NO DIFFICULTY and this brings back that retro feel", but I was genuinely drawn into that game within a few hours of playing it.

It IS difficult yes, but in a way such that you feel like you're making progress each time you die, because you always get that little bit further if not a lot further on a boss you're struggling on etc. It really isn't as hardcore difficult as people make out, some bits are quite difficult, but people really do exaggerate when it comes to the difficulty of this game. It's difficult enough that you can get stuck on some parts for maybe an hour or so, but not so that you just hit a road block and don't feel like playing for a month or so.

Also the way they tell the "story" (not that theres a huge one) and the lore in the game is really cool, it's mainly down to interaction with very scarce NPCs and item descriptions. This also makes the game feel very lonely and have a really cool atmosphere to it.

The way the "levels" are designed makes a game that is quite enclosed feel very "sandboxy" as you aren't guided exactly where to go at any point, you have to figure out a good route to take you through all of the bosses that you need to kill and the levels, although linear do have quite a large amount of areas to explore, and you don't just run in a straight line to complete each section.

Combat is very unforgiving and IMO the PvE combat is designed very simply but very well. It's all about dodging and blocking and seizing the right opportunities to attack. The RPG/level up mechanics are a bit unique too I guess, your class only determines your starting items/stats, and you can make any build from any starting class.

If you're interested in the online mechanics, it has some really unique ones that set it apart from other co-op mechanics in other RPGs. Basically while you're "human" in the game, you can summon in help from other players that can "volunteer" to assist people in need of aid. Since this makes the game a great deal easier, being human allows the player to be invaded by other players that try to kill you and steal your humanity. Which really does lead to some cool fights (due to the environments that they happen in). People can also leave messages on the floor for others to see to give people hints/warnings for whats to come.

I really am having a lot of fun with it, and if you do get it, I'd recommend doing a "blind playthrough" of it, that is, not using a walk through unless you get extremely stuck, because it's way more satisfying to figure out how to progress/kill a certain boss by yourself than it is being told how to do it perfectly by a youtube video.

And for gods sake, pick the Master Key.

I second this.

I can't stress enough how much you need to get Dark Souls. You seriously need to get it and play it as soon as possible. Easily one of the best games of recent times.

Seriously, I implore you to get it.
I come as a suppliant.
Just...just get Dark Souls.

Dark Souls or Dragon Age 2 I can confirm. I'm still waiting on seeing what Dragon's Dogma turns out to be. Anyone know if it's good?

EB has a collection of 3 games called Gothic Collection - Gothic 1,2 and 3 with thier expansions. The first is amazing but the graphics are a tad dated...2 and 3 are incredible.

Warning though, they are open world and have afew minor bugs...Worth it though

Fun fact: I bought the game, placed it in my Xbox 360 and it got the RRoD. True story.

Dragon Age 2 is bullet riddled with awful design decisions and cut corners, Dragons Dogma also has some incredibly annoying flaws but has awesome combat, haven't played Dark Souls, so I would pick Witcher 2, the best out of the ones I've played

I'd definitely go for Dragon's Dogma. Here's why.

It's a bit like Dark Souls in terms of difficulty. You'll know IMMEDIATELY when you're in an area that you shouldn't be, but if you play it right, you can actually push through quite well.

However, I prefer it to Dark Souls because it doesn't take the "Yeah... You figure it out" approach to gaming. The quests are all clearly marked and they're all pretty cool.

There's loads of hidden rooms full of gold and stuff, and it's just really fun.

If you're picking mage to begin with, though, I'd suggest being ready for a bit of a slow start. You only get one spell and it recharges slowly enough, so there'll be a bit of waiting for your pawns to kill stuff for you.

I'm gonna chalk that one down to terrible luck, if there's not at least two other corroborating stories. :( unfortunate for you, my friend.

I would go with The Witcher 2. I bought it on a whim with next to no knowledge of the events of the first game and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was a little confused by the relationships between Geralt, Foltest, Dandelion, and Zoltan at first, but it was all cleared up fairly early on.

I rented Dragon's Dogma and I think I might buy it after I get my first paycheck from my job this summer. The combat is fun and fluid, and the boss battles are epic. The biggest problem with it is the fact that nearly all the quests are received in the main city and the only way to fast travel back to the city to hand in the quests is by using crystals which are fairly difficult to find. Well, the companions deserve a good slap for talking too much, but slaying griffons is far more fun with my own music anyway.
