The only series I'd consider "must buy" are pretty much all dead right now.

... Well, except for one...

Ace Combat is going back to what made it worthwhile, with us going back to Strangereal for the first time in about a decade. With it being Osea vs. Erusea, I'm expecting we'll see locales from both AC04: Shattered Skies and AC5: The Unsung War. Here's hoping it lives up to the memories...

If you really don't want to buy all of them, just get AC04, AC5 and AC0: The Belkan War. The three best in the franchise.

Mass effect. - I just couldn't resist even with Andromeda...I just need more mass effect! Well, unless they manage to make a next game even more of a train wreck than Andromeda...then I'll pass.

Elder Scrolls Series. - (The series has dumbed down a LOT since morrowind (my first game in the series), but I still play Skyrim to this day. Something just keeps drawing me back and I will definitely play the next one. Though I do hope they take this long break from releasing #6 to get a new engine and catch up with the times...

Anything by CD Project RED. - I loved even the first witcher. Controls were clunky, leveling systems were hard to get used to, combat was...weird to say the least. But their world building and general feel of their witcher games was amazing. Can't wait for more of their games.

Well no series is really a "must buy", everything is subject to review and decision making. And I don't buy anything at launch or pre-order unless it's CD Projekt, but that's almost more out of principle.

Anyway, here's my list in no particular order:
-XCOM
-Gears of War
-Half-life (lulz)
-GTA / Red Dead
-DiRT & DiRT Rally
-Fallout
-Elder Scrolls

Things that were on the list but have since dropped off, in case this interests anyone at all
-Gran Turismo (ruined by developmental corner cutting, such as re-using lower poly models, and crazy micro transactions)
-Resident Evil (I'm from the other camp that actually enjoys RE6, and not the shift to first person in RE7, although it's a pretty good game but still. I will miss Mercenary mode)
-Diablo (always online, piss off)

The Sims, Tropico and most of Kalypso's city builders have always been a buy first for me. No matter what kind of mess they get into they always have a place in my heart as the games I first bought as a kid

Etrian Odyssey
Silent Hill
Bloodborne/Demons'Souls/Dark Souls
Metroid
Castlevania
Tenchu

Even among those I think there are exception like Book of Memories, Lords of Shadow sequels, and Galactic Federation Force.

Warcraft (MMO or otherwise)
Pokemon
Fallout
Dark Souls/Bloodborne/whatever is next
Anything Supergiant games makes

Elder Scrolls is *technically* on the list as well, but honestly I tend to pick them up when they're 50% off more than anything. Fun games, but rarely a priority purchase.

I guess GTA, Max Payne, Red Dead...

I love me some basketball, so NBA 2k. I have a spare steam copy of NBA 2k17 if anyone wants it?
Not gonna lie. If Max Payne 4 lived up to 2 and 3, I'd buy it for sixty dollars. I never do that anymore. Though, Rockstar would probably make me wait nine months for the PC version.
I'd take remakes of 1 & 2 on modern tech and pay good money for 'em too.

I wouldn't say any series is a must buy ever because different developers/directors can continue a once soul-full series just because it makes money for the publisher. Thus, my must buys are concerned with creators rather than brands and they are...

-Kojima directed game as MGS5 was still decent but more Konami's fault than his. At worst, Kojima makes something interesting, which is sadly rather uncommon in the game industry

-Platinum games, at least from their A-team

-Arkane games, since Dishonored, I've loved everything

-Fumito Ueda/Team ICO; I don't know if Team ICO is still exists or what but whatever Ueda's next project is I'm interested

Guess the definite must-have's for me would be Diablo. It's the only one for which I own all the main games with the expansions. All the rest will have to wait

Hmm. I think following a video game series is quite a personal thing to do. I don't think that many game series are 'must buys' that people can recommend to friends because the titles are often so different from each other so it's difficult to recommend an entire series.

That said, if I had to, my top pick for a must buy is the Monkey Island Series. I could happily play any of those for games at any time of my life and love them. Two more would be the Batman Arkham series and the Legacy of Kain series - both phenomenal. (I'd also probably stick GTA in there as well, because there isn't a game I haven't enjoyed and played all the way through, but I'm aware it's cliche).

There are quite a few other series that have ruined their anthology for me with a few dodgy games - Resident Evil, for example.

Edit: Oh god, I nearly forgot Castlevania - one of my favourite series ever. (I'm not counting Lords of Shadow because it's a spin off, so it's still allowed).

almost every series have atleast one bad game so i cant say if a whole series is must buy. even Deus Ex have second game which was terrible and mankind divided which was not weaker of 2 prequel.

Series Like Doom have no bad game and so is Metro. so i guess these are must buy for me.

Nearly forgot the original thief series (not counting the reboot, which isn't really part of the series). God i love the lore in those games.

Maybe games made by Atlus and Platinum?
Over the years they've rarely let me down.

That's...about it at this point.
There's really no 'series' that I follow enjoy to blind buy.

Persona games.
There is no question about it. After such a great record of good games, there is no regret by me when I pre-order a new Persona game.

Mostly just Shin Megami Tensei, I guess. I buy the annual "Atelier" game, and the semi-annual "Tales" game, but more out of a sense of familiarity than anything. If I ever found myself short on money around their releases, I'd be willing to postpone or if necessary even cancel my plans to buy them

SMT, though, is a different beast. Especially if it's a main series game or a persona game. I'm getting it come release even if I have to sacrifice organs in the attempt.

It helps that, as Jim Sterling said, the games have achieved a level of quality consistency that AAA publishers would kill for, so it's seldom a risk on my part.
