What series should be the "mascot" for JRPGs?

I would think as far as "traditional" goes Dragon Quest series would be the best. Quirky, easy to pick up, deep, long story/play time. Kind of a good all around idea of what the "classic" jrpg from the nes days were like. That you can still pick up on a modern system.

I would love Shin Megami Tensei to be the mascot of JRPGs, but its going to have to be Final Fantasy. It's more recognisable and SMT becoming mainstream would probably invoke the whole "BLARGH VIDEO GAMES ARE BAD FOR YOUR KIDS" argument.
The lack of exposure to the series in Europe doesn't really help it's case either.
I agree. I live down under, so half the games don't get released here either.

Also, I personally think that JRPGs seem better just because the standard is just better. Games like The World Ends With You and SMT: Devil Survivor blow away any other console JRPG during their time. I think it's because developers are forced to use they gaming system as effectively as they can with the money they have.

People need to get this idea that JRPG's need to evolve out of their heads. JRPG's have evolved too much already to satisfy complainers who don't play JRPG's anyway.

Ever notice how JRPG's sell well on the DS but not well on the consoles? The DS (and GBA) has ports of older JRPG's while the console have these new "evolved" JRPG's. It seems clear that more people prefer the older JRPG's to the newer ones.
I disagree. Every genre needs to evolve else we'd be playing the same game, over, and over, which is what a lot of genres have fallen into. Starcraft 2, Call of Duty, has been proof of it. Infact I'd argue that's why I don't purchase said DS rpgs, the other reason being I'm not big on handheld gaming.

Oh, and chances are the only reason why they may seem to sell more on DS is because more people own a DS.

Ontopic, there shouldn't be a mascot for JRPGs. Each series has it's own merits.
Nope, not everything needs to evolve. I have no interest in seeing Mario become an RTS for example. I don't want JRPG's to become WRPG's either and that is what is happening.

The DS may have a larger install base but it also has alot more JRPG competition. Will you buy Chrono Trigger or will you buy Dragon Quest IX?

Also, it doesn't take a genius to see that when people talk about their favorite JRPG's, they are almost always pre-current gen.

Dismiss it all you want but turning the JRPG into some WRPG/Zelda hybrid is losing fans, not gaining them. Turning JRPG franchises into movies also isn't helping.
I'd rather Mario an RTS than the rehashed stuff they keep releasing. Same with all their franchises infact. Zelda hasn't changed at all, MP hasn't either other than the jump from 2d to 3d. I'm certainly tired of those franchises. Just play the old game if you like the style so much, there's no point in re-releasing the same game over.

That's why there's more competition, it has a bigger fanbase. Handheld consoles are MASSIVE in Japan. Not to mention it is far cheaper to develop for the DS than it is a console. With a niche genre like JRPGs, and also due to the current economic situation, it is no wonder developers are going the cheaper route.

One word. Nostalgia. The reason why Final Fantasy VII is mentioned so often as the best JRPG ever? For the majority of them it was their first jrpg.

Keeping JRPGs the same doesn't help either. I'm not saying all of them should turn into WRPG or Zelda clones(Hell, I've already pointed out I don't like Zelda much anymore). However, keeping them the same isn't helping either. You need to strike a balance. Evolve enough in the right directions, but keeping it a JRPG. Borrowing some ideas from other genres is hardly bad either. Quite frankly I'd rather the battle system of XIII or Tales of over the old turn based system. It's fast and flowing. Unlike the age old turn based system where you still have to wait for all your party members to slowly attack, and then the boss slowly attack you. Not to say I don't like turn based on the occasion(Although it could do with some new ideas being inserted). I just wouldn't want it in every game.
Tales is just button mashing. It gets old real quick and I certainly prefer a slower, more strategic approach where I can control ALL of my characters. If I wanted something that doesn't allow me to control more than one character while selecting attack (or auto) over and over I would play FF XIII. Isn't it obvious that people don't want that?

As for Zelda, I'll be buying the new one when it comes out. I just don't want my JRPG's to turn into action adventure games.

Oh and FF7 really is better than any FF that came after it.
Final Fantasy VII is good, but hardly better than later Final Fantasys. I honestly believe IX, X and XIII are better than it. But that's opinion for you.

Tales of is only button mashing if you let it be button mashing, same goes for any other JRPG. You can get through the majority of random battles by just mashing X. Bosses, not so much. Unless you grinded a lot. Quite clearly from this thread alone, people love the tales of series, so clearly they do want that. XIII on the other hand, different strokes for different folks.

Saying that all games should go back to their roots and be turn based, because you prefer them that way is incredibly arrogant. Limiting the range of games developers offer is never a good thing. I love pizza, but if I kept eating the same kind of pizza every day, I'd get tired of it pretty quick.

I don't think it should be Final Fantasy... Mostly for the reason that its become somewhat of an stereotype... You mention you like JRPGs or even say you like anime, and immediately everyone assumes you love Final Fantasy to death...

I nominate Persona, Tales, Dragon Quest, or Disgaea...

Ehhhh.
I like the Tales series but, id think the Dragon Warrior/Quest, Lufia, Phantasy Star, or Fire Emblem series would be better suited to be the Mascot if we had one.
They have been around the longest and influenced the genre the most.

But i actually wouldn't want to choose a Mascot, JRPGs can be very versatile.
Don't forget Suikoden. :)

I did like Disgaea, but I could never get past the broken leveling system to enjoy it, and it seems like the only reason the geo system exists is to make the game harder for you rather than to add any strategic depth. I cast my vote for Dragon Quest, but it's not very reliable since I haven't played a JRPG in a long time.

If it were Monday, I would say Golden Sun. But since it's not, Fire Emblem has quite a few JRPG tropes without being too cliche.
Oh God. Damn you for reminding me. There's no way I'll be able to get it for a while. I can't wait. It's going to be so awesome.

Well, I'm going to go with Golden Sun since it's third game is coming out on Monday. Failing that I would agree with the Tales of... series. ToS is my favorite game of all time.

The genre shouldn't need a "mascot". Period.

I say let the best game win. There are situations where turn based combat is appropriate, and situations where it isn't. JRPGs shouldn't ever have to "default" to turn-based just because that's how they "always were".

Hell, Tales of Symphonia and even Secret of Mana proved that the genre can work.
The point is moot.

(opinion) In the last 3 years, the only JRPGs that I found to be of any note were Infinite Space and the Persona Series. That's really it. Following that (chronologically) is Tales of the Abyss, then Suikoden 3.

FF10 can eat a dick. FF12 bored the shit out of me. And every game that Namco-Bandai has released since Tales of the Abyss has been maddening to even watch, let alone play (Eternal Sonata starts off with a cool tribute to Fredrick Chopin...and then it's all downhill from there).

SMT's Persona should do the trick. At any version you get decent amounts of edge, humor, and mystery. All that other stuff tends to get a little juvenile, and honestly I feel Final Fantasy hasn't been epic since 3 (America).

Overall to I agree with Atmos, there hasnt been any noteworthy JRPG's in the last three years.
