Put one together yourself, for around 750$ you can have a pc that crushes most games, and can run crysis on high. (Not counting windows xp, which can be bought on the cheap)
Everyone's prices are varying here.

Some say $450
Some say $500
Some say $750
Some say $1100
Some say $2500

omg!!!
Depends on if you're willing to settle for the Best Buy special, if you're going to build a PC yourself for $14 on Newegg, or if you're willing to overpay Alienware for something covered in blue LEDs and decapitated aliens.
Well, my sister's husband built his own PC, so I was thinking of having him help me do this, I just wanted to get a starting point here, and then move on.

I suggested you buy an Xbox 360, because.... With a PC you will constantly need to update it with new Graphics card and Ram and ect. (believe me I just recently did so after 2 years Bought pc for 400 now I just spent about 300 to upgrade it again) So in the long run your gonna have to save up close to 600-1200 dollars for a DECENT gaming computer (you are using it for gaming right?) while as with an Xbox it just the 290 up front but you also have to buy games which are RIDICULOUSLY OVER PRICED at 60$ but I mean just get one you'd be good with untill next paycheck or whatever. But on the other hard you don't really have to pay for PC game's just Torrent them or what ever but It's your call. I personally I like PC gaming better but I also own an Xbox and I play it more than my PC I just really like Warhammer: online haha.
Well, if I got a good enough graphics card I wouldn't need to constantly upgrade it that much would I? I mean I know that computers are constantly getting better and better, but I mean if I got a good computer, or built my own, that would mean I would be good to go for about 5-10 years right? I mean I've had this computer since....jeez....6th or 7th grade and I am now im 11th grade. (note that it was a basic dell computer, and still is)
Something like that. I've had my computer for about five years now as well, and I only made two major upgrades. I hated the chipset it originally came with and put in a Geforce 8800 GT, and I upped the RAM to 3 GBs. It can still run most of the newer games, though it struggles the newer open world games (GTA IV, Saints Row 2, stuff like that).

Anything over $750 and you're doing something wrong. Anything under $500 and you're probably not getting enough bang for your buck.

3-6 before you'd REALLY need to start upgrading, and even then you can just pop in another video card in SLI or Crossfire and boom problems solved, I'd recommend just picking up an 9800GTX if you do (which you should) your own build. Plus if you get if off newegg you get a free CoD:WaW and if you like to get cheap games with PC you can...

Because 2 of my best friends started playing it. Needless to say, they haven't seen sunlight in 2 years.

I like my soul, and I personally like having a life (occasionally), and I'm not saying that all WoW players have no lives, just most. And because I don't like those types of games.
Isn't that what non-gamers think about "regular" gamers? Maybe, just maybe, is it possible that you're judging WoW on the mainstream stigma towards it?

Besides, just because you're friends are into something hardcore - to the point where they forget to bathe - it doesn't mean you can't play it casually and still have a life.

Build it yourself.

You really only need more then 1000$ if you are doing video processing or CAD stuff.

The cpu I would suggest would even be able to do the above, but yeah you get the point right? It doesn't cost much, and you can do it over time even.

Don't listen to this guy. SLI and crossfire are death traps. Somethings don't even support them.

Radeon 4870+Kentsdale 2.4ghz quad and four gigs of ram.. You will be good. (Plus the case, mobo which you should ask some the escapist.. I can't find a good one ever on newegg, HDD, and maybe a few goodies like potentially a sound card.)

Well I'm just saying that with a 360 it's good until say 10 year's down the road when there is a "new" gen system and everything that come with such. But I mean I had this PC since I was in 8th grade (note I am in 11th too) and It is also a basic dell weird.... but after a while I wanted to play newer and better games and I needed to upgrade from a shit graphic card to an ATI Radeon HD 4890 and I mean I just think i would be a smart choice, but It's your money do what you will.

Well, it depends what you want. If you want your platform for movies definitely go for a PS3. Although you didn't put it on your list, it is the one console that I have just because of the blu-ray drive. I DID have a blu-ray drive for the PC, but don?t get one. The quality sucks ass even if you have an amazing monitor or theatre system (if you plugged it into one). While it is better than DVD, it looks like the frames were painted and the movement is quite blurry. If you want it for friends coming over, you for a console 'cause there's not many games that have hotseat gameplay for PC and the ones that do are turn-based games (great for you, not great for you and your friends).
However, if you want it for anything else, go of PC. If you're going to go for a PC however, get a good one. The graphics has increased very fast in just the last decade. For example, look at most 1996-2004 games (Black and White, Morrowind, Half-Life, HL Mods such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress, etc) compared to their sequels (Black and White 2, Oblivion, Half-Life 2, the Source Engine games) and you can clearly see that your rig that you had in the former period is much lacking for the latter period. So get a really good rig. While it can cost you even $1000, you won't have to upgrade in a long time.

Okay, now that we have decided that I will be building my own PC. I would like to know what the Escapists recommend for parts. The list will be as follows. Note that the price range is going to be from $450 - $600!

Monitor:
Motherboard:
Tower:
CPU:
RAM:
Graphics card:
(anything you wish to add)

Well, to be honest, I game just as much as they do, if not more, on the 360. And I am not judging people, I am friends with a lot of WoW gamers, and they seriously put that ahead of their lives, and I am not even going to get into that.

Just saying, I am not going to play WoW and throw my life away, that's all :]

Well, you said you won't have enough to get a high spec PC, so I'd go with the 360 so you can play the higher spec games. But if you get a low end pc and eventually upgrade it will work out cheaper, since any game that comes out on the PC can be downloaded from warez for free. You might just have to pay for an RS account. I havent bought a pc game in years ;)

I'll say get a 360. I think that, on the long run, PC's are better, but you need to know how to run it - at least, have some cursory knowledge of how to set up your CPU and stuff like that. From the way you post, you don't have it. I don't, either, and that's why the 360 is my primary gaming machine - it doesn't have internet connection (there's no Live in my country) and doesn't have as wide of a gaming selection, but when I stick a CD in it, I'm damn sure it'll run. If I'm wrong and you can actually set up your PC nicely, then yes, it is the better choice.

Alternatively.

Chevelle it's easier than you think. Building a PC was like solving one of those jigsaw puzzles with the massive pieces that they give to babies.
That doesn't help at all, but okay!

*thinking about the meaning of that post*
*fails....*
Oh come on you know what I'm talking about! It's like it just "comes" to you, you see that the GPU goes into a PCI express slot, so you look for the slot and stick it in there. If you have any computer geek friends they could most likely help you and get things done very quickly.

Real easy even if you've never done a Jigsaw before.

Monitor: Just get a 19" if you wanna be cheap ( I went 24" 1080p incase I want to watch blu-ray)
Motherboard:GA-MA790X-UD4P
Tower: Antec 900
CPU:AMD Phenom II X4 920
RAM:G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2
Graphics card:GTX 260
(anything you wish to add)
Also the APEVIA ATX-AS520W-BK 520W is need for the Power Supply ( you need power) This is all totally out around 700, but your getting a great video card and CPU, This would run all your source games maxed with plenty frames, granted I just threw this together in 10 minutes, I'd look into some of the parts before you get them, but those are my suggestions, I know I took over your price range a bit but this would be a very nice build

I'm for a PC over a 360, and the link posted earlier should be of great use to you. Welcome to the wide open world of PC gaming :D
