What should I get for the Playstation 3? Should I get a Playstation 3?

Hi! Long time browser, and I think I actually did have an account at one time some time ago, but it was long enough that I don't remember it, and can't find it, so forget it! New account time! Hi!

Back to business at hand: baring the massive bias toward PC (not completely unfounded; this was the first year I ever made a Steam account, too. Left 4 Dead 2!), and massive bias against Nintendo (again, not entirely unfair; the WiiU should have been released a little later than it was, with all the awesome games about to come out for it, or should have come out with Gamecube Backwards Compatability, too), I figured this would be a great place for me to get some advice with other fellow gamers.

Now that we're on the next generation of gaming, I wanted to look at some of the games I didn't have a chance to play. I had a Wii (loved it) and have a 360 (Xbox Live can die in a fire), but I never got a PS3. And if I could come up with a list of 20 or so games for it that I know I'd like to play or should have played, I was going to invest in it and play for a bit.

I've got the following games in mind, but wanted to ask for any other recommendations from the Escapist!
-Yakuza 4 (The TwoBestFriends played this. They barely played half the content. It looks sexy.)
-Anarchy Reigns (Another TBFP, but since seeing it in action, I've been watching stuff for it on youtube, and it actually inspired me to make this list in the first place. I tried buying it on the 360, but when I found out it had -no- local multiplayer of any kind, I immediately returned it, since I wasn't going to get on Xbox Live again. But the Ps3's multiplayer is supposed to be free, right? Definitely hitting that if so! If not... what a buzz-kill.)
-House of the Dead 4 (One of my favorite light gun games; wish it were available on the Wii...)
-Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix (massive Kingdom Hearts fan, beat 1 and GBA and Days, but would love to play the super versions brought to america!)
-Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix (likewise)
-Infamous (Because that's just nothing but awesome)
-Prototype (again, likewise)
-Resident Evil 5 (only if A) Capcom doesn't release it on Steam or otherwise on PC without GFWL, and B) if the PS3 still has free multiplayer, unlike Xbox Live and like with Nintendo. Otherwise, pass.)
-The Last of Us (I heard that this has a multiplayer, alongside a superb single player, though I never really investigated it.)

That's 7 definitely, and potentially 9. Any thing else worth investigating?

A few notes about my playstyle, for anyone willing to respond back:

I'm terrified of scary games. Resident Evil 4-5 barely skirt the line, since they've got just enough action to dilute the scariness. Resident Evil 6 wasn't scary at all, and the action was both too much and done poorly. Huh.

Shooters.... I don't mind shooters, but the gritty, realistic, cover-based brown, military, generic white protagonist fighting against foreigners? Not my thing. Halo 1 was the best Halo, but I'll still play 007 Goldeneye any day.

Complete and total Nintendo Fanboy (I just wished they did their business a bit better, but I still hold genuine hope that they aren't going to be the Dreamcast of this generation. Gamecube support would have helped them out, as would have proper marketing, but I've had a lot of fun with my friends and my games, Mario Kart's already awesome, Bayonetta 2 and Project X and Hyrule Warriors and whatever Retro decides to do should help with the sales, and SMASH BROS WITH MEGAMAN is gonna be the Hypest Gaming on Youtube!), so things that are more fun than they look are usually a plus in my book, realism be damned. Things that are supposed to look good before they play good, on the other hand, can usually die in a fire. (pardon my rant)

I have a handful of best friends nearby, so local multiplayer is cool. Single player I usually just rent unless it's -amazingly- good. Once I've beaten a game, I usually move on and mark it as part of my conquest unless I enjoyed it enough to keep going.

I think that should be enough info... anyone have any insight for me? I appreciate it all!

To be honest my Wii PS3 and 360 (before I gave it to my sister for kinect stuff) have all been collecting dust for the past several years.(I just fired it up an hour ago to load some PS1 games on my PSP, also a dust magnet.) But, I've noticed a distinct lack of God Of War 3 in your list. Anyone with a PS3 needs to at least borrow a friend's copy and commit Greek deicide for a couple hours. I haven't played Ascension, though. Little Big Planet also warrants any PS3 owner to at least check it and the user created levels out.

Regrettably the only other exclusives not on your list I can think of are shooters(well one is kinda). I didn't like Resistance for all the reasons you mentioned. The Uncharted series is what you want if you like Tomb Raider/Indiana Jones type adventure games and don't mind it being mashed together with a 3rd person shooter, it loves cover though. And, I picked up Killzone 3 second hand a few months ago for cheap, thinking it's something I'll play for a couple hours max. Nope that was Tron: Evolution(hint: don't get that one unless your frustration limit is at Buddha levels). Killzone 3 was pretty fun, with crazy future military toys to play with that would make CoD jealous.

Oh, and check out the Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter collections if you missed out on those games back in the PS2 era.

I'm going to second Valkyria Chronicles. I played it with my roommates at school a few years back and completely fell in love with it.

Every so often I get the urge to pick up a PS3 of my own, and it's always the first game that comes to mind that I want to play on it. Only reason I haven't yet is because the 500GB bundles keep dropping in price.

Ok, stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet.

3D Dot Game Heroes
Journey
Ratchet & Clank Future series
WipeOut HD Fury
Disgaea 3 & 4
Okami HD
Sly Cooper HD Trilogy
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
Metal Gear Solid 4
ICO & Shadow Of The Colossus Collection

And another vote for Valkyria Chronicles, because it is great and every PS3 owner should have it. If only it got the love it receives now back when it was first released.

I'd definitely suggest any of the God of War games or any of the Uncharted games. Also, any of the Ratchet/Jak/Sly games as previous posters have suggested.

I bought a PS3 solely for LittleBigPlanet (perhaps somewhat reckless I'll admit.) I don't regret it though, I sunk so many hours in that game. It's also amazing how much fun you can have with friends simply by attaching rockets to a skateboard and hanging on for dear life!

Ha ha, so yeah! I recommend

LittleBigPlanet
Journey
Modnation Racers (controls nicely, a great Mario Kart feel to it... Fun game)

These are all good starts, I'd say!

I'll just throw in my usual two recommendations:

The Last of Us

Best mix of stealth and action I've ever come across. Action is brutal without being silly. Good story, good characters that even develop, good dialogue. One of the only games I've seen do "grey morality" well. Looks pretty too.

Journey

It's one of those arty games. Umm... you walk across a desert and up a mountain. While listening to really nice music. It's a very pretty desert. Oh, and if you're connected to the internet then you'll make a friend or two along the way. It's all very chill and with a kind of multiplayer that doesn't make you hate people's guts.

Already suggested but I think it deserves to be mentioned again: Valkyria Chronicles, you can't go wrong with this game.
I also suggest the Ratchet and Clank Future series.
And though it is a short game, and among the first one released for the PS3, Heavenly Sword.

The Resistance series is good although the class-based co-op of R2 that I have so oft praised is I think now offline. Still worth it probably at the price you'd find it now, but yeah. And MGS4, and Demon's Souls.

Heavenly Sword was a good hack n' slash with some solid sixaxis sections, which isn't something you hear a lot. It's a bit short though.

And TLoU, I keep forgetting it's an exclusive but it's great. Not a long-term investment but one playthrough is worth it.

Resonance of fate is a fun game, a bit difficult to get into, but fun. White knight chronicles is pretty heavy rpg time wise, although pretty basic story wise.

I'd say you're better off picking up a PS3 than any of the new consoles. I primarily play on PC, but I keep my PS3 around because I couldn't live without: Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles (this thread's got it damned right), Uncharted 1-3, God of War 1-3 (and maybe Ghost of Sparta), Metal Gear Solid HD Collection/MGS4, Vanquish, Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadow of the Damned, Silent Hill Homecoming & Downpour (do NOT get the HD collection), Infamous 1/2, Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain, Drakengard 3, Nier, Flow/Flower/Journey, Katamari Forever, Tokyo Jungle, and the Ico/SotC collection.

If Sony ever let go and there wasn't a project Beast, causing Demon's alone to be ported to the PC, I would sell my PS3 probably. But I admit that it has a high chance of not being your cup of tea.

Should you buy one? Well, i would ask, Do you want one? If thats yes, then yes go buy one. As for games, you have listed some good titles and you have given reasons that you like them.

please play Yakuza 3 (since you have 4 on the list) and all of the available Tales games on the PS3 which includes Tales of Graces f, Xillia, Symphonia HD, Xillia 2, and the upcoming Xillia 2 (to be released in August) and Tales of Zesteria (to be released next year).

Yay, responses! Thanks, escapist! A few responses on a few games that stood out. I'll probably respond to others later.

I should have considered Yakuza 3 if I'm considering Yakuza 4... though I suppose it'd be easy tier to fill this list up with a game and it's sequal, just 10 instead of 20!

I was told that the Dark Souls universe might be good for me. Then again, I was told this after coming off the heels of an I Wanna Be The Guy playthrough, so maybe my mindset might be a bit different now from then. Hard is one thing: I love hard games. Being killed out of nowhere because you -couldn't- have known better without having already played or watched the game, on the other hand, is kinda meh...

Everyone on this thread seems to recommend Valkyria Chronicles. Maybe somethings are popular because they're good...

Little Big Planet was pretty freaking fun with my bro. I wonder why I didn't consider it in the first place (my brother had a PS3, and I played it with him a bit before he moved out).

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.... do I need these on PS3? I have them for PS2... same for Okami, which I have for the Wii. That's another thing about me: I don't really need any fancy HD. I grew up on an SNES; no such thing as bad graphics to me. Picking up an updated release of a game is only usually done for bonus content (like with the Final Mixes for Kingdom Hearts, alongside enhanced difficulty, the 2.5 mix is going to updae the normal 2 with -20- additional bosses! And if the PS3 still has free online, then maybe Birth By Sleep Final Mix can be played online? If not, at least we'll get 4 more epic bonus bosses to kick around. And two for the price of one!).

Lollipop Chainsaw! I remember swearing I'd get that, too, good or bad, just because of how ridiculous it was. Plus it's a Suda 51 game. Love Suda 51, and love No More Heroes. I never get tired of the hacky and the slashy. Surprised I forgot God of War, for that matter.

Red Dead Redemption obviously. Fun as hell, though if you're a PC fan like me, you'll be wishing you had a mouse to aim with rather than the auto-aim.

Demon's Souls. Bit scary, but I'm also scared shitless of scary games. Demon's Souls was scary and hard at first, but once you get into it, it's immensely enjoyable. Easily the best action RPG franchise I've ever played and once you learn the ropes, the action takes over the whole scary thing a lot (though it's still atmospheric as balls sometimes). I do advise an adult diaper for when you first step into Tower of Latria however - that place is creepy as fuck :p

Journey. Believe the hype, it's a great little game.

Btw, Prototype is available on PC as well and handles just fine. The second part isn't worth it imo, but the first is brilliant. No reason you shouldn't get it for PC unless you prefer a controller.

For local multiplayer, I recommend some Mortal Kombat 9. The DLC characters are pretty fun too, try to get the ultimate edition or whatever it's called. It's some of the best fun I've had playing co-op and you can play it 2vs2 with 3 more friends (or if you prefer, play 2vs2 with a friend against the AI - I've had a lot of fun with that as well). For an online fighter, I'd recommend Injustice: Gods Among Us, but I should warn you the playerbase has dwindled. You can still find matches regularly, it's just a bit of a wait before you do. It's a shame it doesn't have 2vs2, would've easily been my favourite fighting game (as it is, I'm torn between it for online and MK9 for local - but that's because MK9 just doesn't work online at all).

Sonic All Star Racing Transoformed. I play that with a mate on his WiiU, but I can't imagine it being much different on a PS3 (we don't use motion controls as they suck, Mario Kart's better for that). Fun as hell, though a bit seizure inducing because... Sonic >.<

That's all I have off the top of my head atm :)

You can get Metal gear solid: HD collection, Heavy rain, Ratchett and Clank, the Uncharted series, The last of us, Sly cooper HD collection, Sly Cooper: Thieves in time, God of war, Killzone, plus a whole lot more. I got a PS3 after having two 360's that tanked on me, and I must say I have never regretted the switch. I still get a hell of a lot of use out of the PS3, more so in the past few weeks as I picked up Watch_dogs and then I managed to get Grand theft auto V brand new for £20 in the same week.
