To be clear, I don't mean any topic that is directly banned by the rules of conduct.

I'm just interested in what you forum goers out there think is unacceptable for this community, by some sort of implicit understanding.

Please keep it clean.

As an example, I think console wars have become sort of taboo these days. People are tired of dealing with people who won't ever change their minds.
Paedophelia for sure, that dealio with LegendaryGamer0 was just bullshit.
Some people are so closed-minded and dsicriminatory, it's disgusting. I can empathise with paedophiles and I actually feel quite sorry for them. It must be equally as hard as me transitioning, except for me, it eventually gets better.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073629/].

It is actually the greatest thing you will ever see.
I've seen greater.

Piracy is pretty taboo here.

Even the grey areas of piracy are pretty taboo and you can get banned for admitting to being a pirate.
Yarrrgh. I guess Captain Knobblybeard isn't welcome here either. Yarr....

Fair enough. I'm not the one to talk. I find myself attracted to a fictional dog from a movie.

Well, you are obviously among the more tolerant users. But, yeah thats nice to hear :)

Nonetheless, I think that most people just thought it too absurd to be true and decided to joke about it - rather than finding any unethical aspect in it.

So in my view everyone likes roles that are played not really the persons behind the role. If that role is a flesh and blood human , drawn person , or cg animals.
Agreed. Hell, to be perfectly honest, I fell in love with Dawn Summers (BTVS) so I'd be a hypocrite to criticize people for falling in love with fictional characters.

Well, we still don?t get away from the trivial fact of Bolt being a dog. :)
I think that?s what upsets people? and the absurdity of the scenario. I should try to clarify some things in my next thread.

It has been said before, but it is just fun to hammer it in...

Pedophilia and any discussion of it on The Escapist forums does not appear to be welcomed with open arms. While not being exactly "Taboo", it is a very sensitive topic that must be handled with care. I am the prime example of this.

[sub]Which is sad... because it could be a pretty intelligent discussion... provided it doesn't turn into a shitstorm.[/sub]

The other, Piracy.

[sub][sub][sub]Don't ban meeeee...[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Pedophilia, I'm sure. I'd say the taboo stuff is stuff that's "sick," not quite everything "illegal" since I've seen my share of mention of killing people.
Paedophilia is a perfectly acceptable fetish (mind you, ONLY when it's a fetish - if it materialises in any way into real life it's terrible)
What what what? How? I'm not one to judge anyone on any aspect of their life or interests. I draw the line when it could affect the happiness of others.
Well, being sexually attracted to children is kinda weird, yes, but if they don't do anything (I don't just mean rape and whatnot, I mean jerking off to pictures and all that unpleasant stuff) it's just a very odd, uncomfertable nature.

Hell, foot fetishes make me uncomfertable and therefore affect my happiness, but they're a-okay
I suppose you have a point. As long as they never act upon it, in any way, someone who is attracted to children isn't hurting anyone. Still, I obviously dont condone it at all. Paedophilia is basically the only fetish I have moral problems with. There are some I find weird, but that is up to the person who's fetish it is, and I have no right to judge them because of it. Live and let live, etc etc
Not that this makes it any better, it's still completley weird, but I think one problem with paedophilia is the "I'm Gay = I fancy YOU" problem

When a guy/girl tells his mates that he/she's gay, they all usually start thinking along the lines of "what if he/she fancies me?"

Bearing in mind that if they were friends of the opposite sex that question would probably not arise - it's just the fact that they assume being gay = being attracted to EVERYONE of the same sex.

People think that paedos would be attracted to every child. Now, not saying that "only being attracted to certain children" is in any way more defendable - it's just this natural assumption of "Oh My God He's a Paedo, Restrain Him Now or he'll Attempt to Rape my Children!"
Again, very good point. I suppose as human beings whenever we are introduced to something different to what we're used to, the instant reaction is fear and loathing, and that is never the best response.

People are stupid. A person can be sensible, but people are idiotic creatures, and thats not an antisocial declaration. Its a behavioural fact.
Damn straight. The Romans used to butcher Christians and feed them to lions because they mistook "the body and blood of christ (bread and wine)" for practising cannabalism.

I'm glad we had this interesting conversation, it's nice when the first dialogue on a new forum is a pleasant one for me.

Are vs. threads against the rules or not, I get confused. Any kind of fanboyism is frowned upon, but people still join in. For such a moderated forum, people seem be quite liberal with what they say, which is great.

How could it possible be a "perfectly acceptable fetish" in any context??
When it is never, ever acted upon in real life.
Be careful there, the last guy that tried to explain this got b&. A lot of people complained, because they felt it was discrimination and the ban is lifted for now. I'm gonna try and get him here. Disclaimer: I don't want to start a discussion about the moderators' actions as that is also not allowed. I'm just giving a friendly warning.
Yeah, I saw that guy when I was lurking. -snip- if I remember rightly. I thought that ban was an appalling slip-up and I'm glad it was corrected. It was his stand against the community and the mods that actually made me reconsider my stance on paedophilia to what I beleive now.
Yeah, that's the guy, and I was careful not to mention his name, maybe you should edit your post. I felt the same way, TBH I didn't understand it. Then he explained it to me, and now I have a completely different view. But to be clear, child molesters should be tortured.
I removed the name because I don't know if he'd want himself mentioned, but to be honest I don't like the idea of pretending he's not there just because the majority of people have a hard time dealing with that kinda stuff. Still, I don't have his permission, so I'll edit it for now. Thanks for the heads up.

While I will admit that your scenario is a bit odder, I'd like to point out that mine is a fictional character who technically has three ages. She's a mystical key from the beginning of time, a teenager and was magically retconed into being a teenager in late 2000. Oh, and not to mention her friends and family include or have included slayers, witches, a former warlock, two vampires, an ex-Vengeance Demon (though friend is stretching it there) and a man who, despite being powerless, has lived through everything from losing his eye to a hit from a hammer that can harm a god. Yours might be a different species, but mine has most likely the craziest (and, at times, angstiest) out of most fictional characters. Not to mention she's technically as old as time, even if she's no

longer in that form and can't remember her time in it.
Well it certainly sounds like you had a crush on an interesting character. :)

And thanks to everyone who posted. Except the part where half the thread dissembled into a discussion of the morality of pedophilia.. it was interesting =)

Actually, you are not alone^^ My ex-girlfriend says she has more respect for me now that she knows im more or less literally in love with Bolty, than she had before when she thought i was just incapable of expressing any emotion whatsoever...
Huh. Well, that's interesting. Good for you then for getting emotions, even if they are for a CG puppy ^-^

Hmm, i guess he might seem a bit puppylike at first glance. But i've never really seen it myself and its certainly not what attracts me about him.
