We're going back to the genre's roots.

We're getting rid of all of the good developments that have happend in the last ten years without bringing back the charm or charisma the old games had.
That's not always a bad thing. What I would give to go back to the games prior to modern warfare. Ugh, can't stand heaps of these new developments.
It's not the concept of going back to an older style of games that's the problem, it's the fact that they generally take the worst parts of the new stuff and mix it with the worst parts of the old stuff.

'We're going to take well known gaming character back to their roots'
= We are going to completely rape the canon of the series.

'Not actual game footage'
= We were too afraid to show you anything real from the game as tbh the graphics sucks and so does the gameplay, but this fancy cutscene will still make you buy it because this is Gears of War or Halo.

The difficulty in that is, it's impossible for them to offer you that outside of procedurally generated content, and even then, you can't get proper dialogue or writing of that kind of system without it ending up sounding/reading like a mish mash of 'insert word here' paragraphs.
The problem isn't that it's hard, it's that they promised the impossible. I understand it's difficult, but people should be held to what they say to some level. If they can't even come close? Don't promise it.

"Innovative."

We slapped a single new gimmick on the product and expect you to eat it up.

"User created content."

We were too lazy to create a full game. Play with the editor instead.

"Due to piracy,"

Our profits are at a record high, but we need a reason to dick you over even more.

"Action packed"

Hey, QTEs are an action, right?

"Strong Multiplayer"

We couldn't think of a plot longer than three hours. Play CTF and TDM on three maps for 60 hours.

"Mature themes"

Designed for 12 year olds. Expect boobs, blood, or bad language to the hilt, and thousands of kids teabagging you online.

"Controversial"

Because how else would we sell you last year's pile of **** again without a "No Russian" scenario?

"The game has deep RPG elements"

There is a tacked-on leveling up system.

"The single payer is 8-10 hours long"

It will take you 5 hours to finish, 3 more to unlock the meaningless collectables
my vote is 3 hours to finish and 5 to unlock the crap...because 1 thing will deffinitly take you forever and a day to unlock because you need to remember some dumb pattern and blah blah blah

It'll come out sometime within the next two years. (This mostly applies to Valve)

"The game is meant to thrill and terrify you,"

Translation-"Were goping to throw in a few hundred zombies, and other mother fuckers from hell and hand you a chainsaw and a shitty combat system. Good luck."

Oooh this is a good thread:

It's the next generation in the X genre
Limitless possibilities
Every decision has consequences
Hours of replayability
changing it up but staying true to (anything)

=If we say it enough people may actually believe it, even though it's not true.

Pushing gaming to a new level of graphics

Pushing story and gameplay to a new low.

Features over X number of weapons/vehicles/spells/things

=X+1 of them.

Really comes alive in multiplayer

Even the Developers are ashamed of their awful singleplayer campaign.

Inspired by X games

Does not feel like those games at all- just wants to steal some of the fanbase.

It's a Halo/COD/Half-Life Killer

Is now scraping the barrel for media attention, and wishes it could one day be a Halo/COD/Half-Life Killer.

Captures the feel of the movie its based on

Give us your money, consumers.

We're announcing a new game in the popular sport series X

Give us your money, consumers.

We're announcing a new game in the popular JRPG series X

Give us your money, consumers.

We're announcing a new game in ANY series

Give us your money, consumers.

No splitscreen/bots/system link/LAN capabilities

We hate you, consumers.

Will appeal to all the family

Will be fun for the crucial 7-9 age group

Well balanced

We can't get rid of every noob cannon, shhh maybe they won't notice...

Innovative

We've never played a lucasarts game and don't even know what innovation is

Realistic

Regen-health

Fun

"The latest entry in survival horror"
=
"The bad guys can kill you in one hit, but you must hit them 10 or 12 times, each. Also, we took out ammo drops, and you can't shoot and use the flashlight at the same time."

"A new experience in Massively Multiplayer."
=
"Merely spending time playing the game will give you points ... which is a shame because we'll be shutting the thing down in three months, after charging you twice as much as most games do."

"An innovative matchmaking system lets you play against other people."
=
"After you grind on the game for several hours playing by yourself against an impassive, unhelpful AI, we'll drop you into live games against obnoxious people who will pound you into dust using techniques you never even thought of, insulting you all the way."

"Immersive cinematics take you away to another world."
=
"The cut scenes pad out the game play to 40 hours, showing you people performing moves that you can't do, and engaging in dialogue written too poorly to actually make it into movies or television. But since we let you push a button every 45 minutes, you'll feel like you're having fun!"

"The latest installment of the widely-acclaimed Japanese franchise."
=
"The cut scenes pad out the game play to 80 hours, showing you people performing moves that you can't do, and engaging in dialogue written too poorly to actually make it into anime. Since we let you stare at women in pain every 45 minutes, you'll definitely be having fun! Don't worry, it's a different culture over there."

"Multiple endings!"
=
"Two endings."

"High replayability!"
=
"Two endings."

"A whole new world, in the latest generation of graphics."
=
"You can't tell the bad guys from the background."

"Graphics that will blow you away!"
=
"Lots and lots of rust."

"You'll have to use your brains as well as your thumbs, as you fight against some of the smartest enemies ever to appear in a game."
=
"Our cover-based mechanic lets you stare at our bump-mapped texture for long periods while you magically regenerate damage, because if you pop your head up for 5 seconds, the AI unerringly caps you in the head."

"Duke Nukem Forever to be released in 2011."
=
"Half Life 2 Episode 3 is now the new joke."

Heart pounding cinematic action

You have no real control over what is happening. It runs at less than 30 frames per second and has horrible motion blur on everything. At least it has some music, sassy one liners and panning shots of the scenery that were inspired by movies.

Borderlands has over 17 MILLION weapons to choose from!!

Borderlands has 20 weapon designs, with lots of different colours and meaningless stats which change very insignificantly with each different weapon!

I read this thread, and I agree totally with all of you guys. WHICH IS SAD.
This is all fucking common sense shit, and yet somehow, the people who are supposed to be experts in the field have marbles where their common sense parts should be.
I suspect its because the schools are training technicians, not craftsman. And the companies are hiring technicians, not craftsman.
