The Gears of War and Halo series. Two series that have pretty much perfected their area of game-play.

However, both of these have a deep, dark background that they completely fail to bring across into the games themselves. Look at the trailers for both of the series, that's the kind of atmosphere they are capable of, and yet they miss it out completely when it comes to actually playing the bloody games themselves.
Gears of War 1 had a nice atmosphere I found.

Might seem odd but, L4D2.

I didn't play the first one (which seems to have not had any story whatsoever) but I came into the second one expecting something resembling a story...just to come to the ending with no conclusion. It seems to me they could've made the opening sequence half (or two thirds) as long and devoted the rest to make a proper ending, even if the ending just was "and everyone in the world died."

Given it doesn't detract from the gameplay itself, which is rather fun, particularly once you get to play the infected. I suppose they know where their priorities lie, but story telling sure wasn't one of them.
They didn't make a story because the campaigns' inspiration was "generic zombie film", or atleast that is what they were aiming for with L4D1.

I really don't get what the heck is up with that one cut scene in Zelda: Twilight Princess when the dragon guy (haven't played it in a long time, don't remember names,) is telling Link about the Triforce. Sure, it's info, but the cut scene itself is just... demented!

I'm pretty sure Indigo Prophecy has this in spades. That and the Fry Cry 2 ending. Both consist of a ending that is nothing good or expected.

It's not nuts. It ties the story of Altair and Desmond together quite nicely.

Desmond is captured by Abstergo, the head of the modern Templars. Since he is a decendant of Altair, they need him to find a piece of Eden. If you hack all the computers and such, it reveals that the Templars plan to use a piece of Eden to brainwash everybody, much like they planned to do to the Holy land during the crusades. They need Desmond because they lost their piece of Eden to a terrorist attack, most likely assassains. They force Desmond to use the animus long enough so that they can access the final memory; an image of earth with all the Pieces of Edn marked. Once they have this, the lock Desmond back up and leave him to his own devices, because he is no longer needed. This is where you see the prophetic messages, a result of the "bleeding effect" giving Desmond eagle vision. This messages were most likely left by the last test subject, who also is important(Do no know why).

On the surface Assassains Creed is just a hack and slash targetted at the frat boy majority. Beneath that, it is actually pretty deep, with conspiracies that link the past and the future quite nicely.
For me, everything with Desmond is completely unnecessary. There was plenty of intrigue and plot development in the past that there was no need to even move the story to the present. All the characters in the past have plenty of motivation and their storylines are interesting and complex.

Bringing it to the present to add another (weak in my opinion) plotline isn't really necessary. The templars and assassins in and of themselves are interesting enough to follow through the ages without introducing alien technologies and world domination.

When I finished the second one, I found the sci fi modern story that Desmond is a part of to be quite tacked on. They are trying to force a modern sci fi overlay onto a rich historical fiction. I'd rather have twice as many interactions between Ezio and Leonardo any day over those of Desmond and Lucy.

I don't understand how there are a handful of posts regarding the "Team Fortress 2" post on page one. To be honest, I really fucking hated that game as well. I also think Counterstrike was a terrible game. However, I don't need to put any shields up because anyone who quotes and yells at me is an incompetent moron that doesn't need to share the air I breathe. I was quoted in a Team Fortress 2 thread not that long ago when I simply said I disliked TF2. That quote said something along the lines of, "it was my personal opinion." That guy is made of win. All others shouldn't have been the fastest sperm.

Anyway, a "what the fuck were they thinking?!" moment? Pretty much that term goes straight to Bioshock 2.

Grand Theft Auto 4 driving physics...what kind of car physics were they going for...no normal car spins in a complete circle when one presses the drifting break. Or in most shooter games where the enemy can take Millions of rounds to the face and NOT die whereas i take three shots to the chest and i get instant death

The ending was left open because they had the intention of future releases. You don't end something if you plan to continue it, that just wouldn't make sense.
I understand this, but "conclusion" doesn't necessarily mean "complete ending." You can't even call it a cliff hanger, at least a cliff hanger fills you with suspension, the ending seemed more like they just found a point and decided to end the game there.

Also it rather pissed me off that towards the end there were hints that the survivors were carriers (and were even referred to as such by the military in the end of The Parish) and then all they do is fly away. Then in an interview the writer says that they were flown off to the safety of an ocean liner - which completely negates what the inside of the game hints at, which makes me wonder if they really were trying at all.

Either way, it seems like they're more focused on the game play than the story, not that I blame them.

*Yells at OmegaXzors* Actually I've never played TF2. I want to try it out sometime though.

Hmm, I'd have to say the Darkvoid demo. It starts in the middle of a cutscene about a fat, tribal looking guy leading Nate Drake around when drake spots a jetpack and takes off. And aliens, I think? They prove me theory about Hp being evil though

So similar!

The ending to Assassin's Creed 2.

The Pope has superpowers and you get to talk to God, who's an alien goddess who knows that you're in the Animus.

Also, the Gods are planning on killing everyone through Global Warming.

Seriously, what the fuck?
I was like what the motherfuck is going on right now thanks for explaining haha.

I'm starting to think I might be the only person on the planet who actually enjoys the slow-boil sci-fi overlay of Assassin's Creed 2. But then I did hunt the "Truth" sequences obsessively when I should probably have been murdering Italians...
