......I am unimpressed

It came to my attention that Amazon sells Mp3 downloads "oh yay!" I thourght..see Itunes doesnt accept PalPal as a payment method, and right now there is no friggin way Im going down to the store to spend $20 on an Itunes gift card

so I think its all good, Untill I enter my adress and it tells me that buying MP3's is a privalige only reserved for the great people of the United States of America

now to be fair I'm sure this isnt news to anyone, I'm kind of new to this "buying online" thing...it just came as an annoying surprise that the internet has to abide by some stupid arbitrairy reagon rules...with digital products out of all things

perhaps in Amazona case theres some vaild reason..mabye price/licencing..I don't know

similar thing happned when I wanted to buy a couple of tracks from a new album that wasnt availiable in Australian Itunes for some fucking reason (I didnt have paypal then)

I don't mind paying for music but somtimes this is really annoying

and I assume this is probably the case with games (steam) as well

[b/]so, my question is why are their reageion relates restrictions? are there valid reasons?[/b]

No real idea but our "protectors" of music right are fucking insane so yes it is likely licensing issues. They do things like try to sue for oh a few billion dollars in "damage" for uploading 3 songs.

Here listen to this guy tell you how absurd things can get, it does not addressees this subject granted but it does give insight to the powers behind it

Yeah, it sucks being Canadian on the internet. All the cool stuff is walled off by region locks.

Why do they even have region locks? even youtube has them. It seems counter-productive if they're trying to get more sales by restricting their consumers.

Record labels can't complain about lost sales through piracy when they region lock content or allow their music to be region locked by sellers. Oz sounds like the worst place to live in the developed world as a gamer, what's the deal with all games content having to be suitable for a 15 year old? Or have I been mis informed?

They don't have the legal rights to distribute the music in other countries.

They would have to get permission from whoever has distribution rights for said country.

But it's digital distribution! do they really need rights for us to access their site?

Digital distribution is often subject to the same regulations as any sort of physical product.

The websites that distribute internationally are often international. For example, Apple exists worldwide, and it has iTunes with a catalogue specific to each country.

We don't have an 18+ rating YET, although one is coming.

I hope.

Please.

Are there VALID reasons? Not in my opinion. But it centers around licencing. Even a few miles north of the border in Canada you run into the same thing quite a bit. Especially with alot of general video. The simple explaination for it is, they didn't want to give a cut to someone there to get the licencing dealt with. No agreement, no content.

That seems plausible. Fast forward to the future and all the music will be on the Internet but the record companies wouldn't allow anyone to buy any, 'cuz for the lulz.

Because the legal mumbo jumbo says so -.-

The UK still gets to download mp3's through its UK website. Isn't there a Amazon AU?

But we still aometimes get shafted. Theres quite a few games on the US psn store that is not in the UK one :p

I feel if the traditional way of getting something tries to stop you through no fault of your own, that's a free pass to become a pirate. Then maybe they'll stop building so many hoops to jump through for them to take your damn money.

I have had a problem sort of like this before where I had a master card gift card which I was planning to use to buy the PC version of Minecraft but because the monney was going to a place outside the US I was not allowed to make my purchase.

Likely the reason is how slack Canada is on pirates. The RCMP have stated that they will never go after pirates simply because it's too hard of a job to handle and track all of it; which makes pirating essentially legal in canada (for private purposes).

So that's why I can see how companies would be reluctant to release their digital product in Canada, because they know Canada law will do little to protect them from piracy.
