HD has been a marketing ploy for a long time. But the definition of HD has now been standardised.

For further details.

In RuneScape (which is free with the exception of the members' expansion), HD stands for High Detail. I think the term "HD" is usually used to refer to graphics that are the best around, at least in the developers' eyes.

when people talk about "I want FF7 re-released in HD Graphics" means that they want the game re-released with up-to-date graphics. They want to essentially play through FF7 with Advent Children caliber environments and characters.

Personally, I think re-releasing games is a silly notion. Its a creativity sink. These teams that are re-releasing these games are wasting their creativity polishing a turd.

If you want to play FF7, play FF7; if you want to play Baldur's Gate:SoA, play Baldur's Gate:SoA

Want a good example of taking a regular game and HDing it up? Rez. it was on the DC and PS2, then remade on Live Arcade for the 360.

Or play Symphony of the Night on Live Arcade. First, with the uprezzing, then turn it off to see how the game originally was. There are large differences.

Maybe the developers would just like to expose their older games to a generation that may not have grown up with said games.
