i started playing heroes of the storm yesterday. the newest blizzard games using IPs from their franchises like diablo, warcraft and starcraft. today i played another game this time with arthas and something took me by surprise
this is arthas abilities and their icons. now this is not important what is important is that all these icons are straight from warcraft 3. (note: i didnt play the previous games so i dont know if they are from that game) warcraft 3 and its expansion pack frozen throne came out in 2003. thats 12 years ago. and blizzard, one of the wealthiest companies out there, still uses art used in that game. im sure some icons are in HotS from starcraft and diablo too but i never played those games.
so why the hell is blizzard doing this? its not like they dont have the time or money to make new art.

i thought using the exact same voice of the wolves dying from warcraft 3 in hearthstone was lazy but this....

I disagree completely.

One of the main draws of HotS is the nostalgia for old characters, so I see using original icons to be a nice touch. Sure, they could remake the old icons, but this way a fan of Warcraft 3 can fire up HotS and be all "Oh hey, I know these! :D ". There's a lot one can complain about regarding HotS, but I don't consider this to be one such item. Quite to the contrary.

Why fix what isn't broken? 99% of the playerbase probably isn't even going to be looking at those icons and will just be using the keybinds instead.

Wealthy companies usually don't get that way via needless spending.

Why does it matter?

I mean, would the game be improved in any tangible way by making some new little icon pictures?

Those look perfectly serviceable to me.

If anything, familiar icons are probably a positive. What a crazy thing to be upset about.

You kidding right? I think it's pretty neat that they were able to get the exact same icons for all the people who played the shit out of past Blizzard games.
Aside from that, this is a bit like complaining that the Hadoken has the same name for over 20 plus games.

Doesn't Hadoken literally translate to " fire from my hands"? I don't think it was named that by accident.

OT: it's the familiarity of the matter. People love keeping things they know. Most players would look at those and have an idea of what they are.

Well, the point I was making was more "If it isn't broke..."
That and it's actual japanese name is "Wave Motion Fist" or "Surge Fist" because despite being the poster boy for a fighting game fireball, only a handful of them actually light people on fire.

Huh, a quick google search shows that you're right. I wonder why i thought it was fire from my hands.i gotta find the source for that and beat the crap out of them.

Well. I know what i'm gonna be doing for the next 2 hours. Googling the names of fighting game special moves :/.

I believe it was a joke video that a website did poking fun at the fact that Street Fighter 4 would have english VA's and how woeful the translation would be.

Yeah, I'm of the same opinion that its a good thing.

I mean, the MOBA genere was created on the back of a Warcraft III mod, getting to revisit those same heroes in a official MOBA game release with them feeling familiar to what they were is kinda cool in my opinion.

Congrats, good sir: today you've earned the Nit-Pickiest of Nit-Picks Trophy!

Seriously...complaining that the icons for a character in a game are the same as the icons from a game that same character was in previously? If this makes you say "What the hell?" then I'd be interested to see your reaction to things that are actually worth complaining about. :p

You could say the art was iconic.

I have nothing else to add.... except that I am sorry, so very sorry.

So players who recognize those icons know immediately what they do. It's Arthas from Warcraft 3, after all. If he has the same abilities, it makes sense to keep them recognizable.

I nitpicked a smaller nitpick once. On the actual feedback form for pikmin 3 I wrote that there were not enough juice colors in the game. See, at the end of the day there is a juice pouring and juice drinking animation, and it was beautiful and good and I loved it but there were too few juice colors.

OT: Yeah, nostalgia is a big part of the game. So... you pretty much missed the point as hard as you possibly could have. The wolves dying in hearthstone used the same sound effect because it was meant to hit that little button in your brain that says "Hey! I remember that!" The icons are the same thing.

They are emblematic of my problem, I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and hand them over.

Completely unrelated, just saw your pic and recognized it on a month-old Youtube comment on a Jimquisition youtube video I had open in another tab. It's you, hilarious.

On topic: Another MOBA? Get real blizzard. They trying to make their own super smash brothers MOBA by mashing all their unrelated IPs together. I don't think I give a crap.

The default icons are a plus though. OP is being silly.
