You could say the art was iconic.

I have nothing else to add.... except that I am sorry, so very sorry.
We talked about this, Wuvlycuddles.

i started playing heroes of the storm yesterday. the newest blizzard games using IPs from their franchises like diablo, warcraft and starcraft. today i played another game this time with arthas and something took me by surprise
this is arthas abilities and their icons. now this is not important what is important is that all these icons are straight from warcraft 3. (note: i didnt play the previous games so i dont know if they are from that game) warcraft 3 and its expansion pack frozen throne came out in 2003. thats 12 years ago. and blizzard, one of the wealthiest companies out there, still uses art used in that game. im sure some icons are in HotS from starcraft and diablo too but i never played those games.
so why the hell is blizzard doing this? its not like they dont have the time or money to make new art.

i thought using the exact same voice of the wolves dying from warcraft 3 in hearthstone was lazy but this....
I don't want to burst your bubble but these icons are also used in WoW.

I was wondering why nobody had brought that up so far. Yeah - WoW did reuse a lot of icons from Warcraft. It's the first thing that came to mind when I read this topic. In fact, I remembered this because I remembered specifically how a friend of mine (who started WoW before me...or rather, pretty much at launch) praised this aspect. OK "praise" may put it too strongly, but his exact words were "That's smart of Blizzard - they have Warcraft assets already, it makes sense to reuse them for World of Warcraft."

If you'd been in the game during beta/alpha, they used to have a *LOT* more 'vintage' icons. They've been slowly replacing them with updated ones based on 'actually needs updating'. At some point Arthas will probably get a new set of icons for his abilities, but since there's nothing actually wrong with the icons he currently has...good readability as to function, etc, it's unlikely they're high on the priority list.

It let's people who played Warcraft 3 know what the abilities do without even looking at the name or description. Also, it pushes those nostalgia buttons.

I love Warcraft 3 so much. I want Warcraft 4 so bad.

Warcraft 3 had awesome icons, several WoW Icons are also from Warcraft 3 -- literally all of the Warcraft 3 Shaman ability icons are used.

Oh look, the good ol' icons from Warcraft 3, also used in WoW, that not only tickle one's nostalgia bone, but also allow old fans to easily recognize how does the ability in question work.

Yeah, i see no issue here.

Why should they George Lucus it? The icons are fine, there is no need to update it just for the sake of updating it. It's not like they are based off of archaic icon rendering technology that has stopped them from reaching their full potential, nor are the designs based off of some outdated fashion. Which icons could have been improved, and in what way?

I started playing HotS last week. The first thing I played was Arthas, because I played WC3 and the storyline -Arthas included- was very good. Seeing that his skillset was almost unchanged and that he still fits into the game made me really glad. Anub'Arak stays true to his original skillset too.

This game is basically made so fans of the series can smash their favorite action figures together, taking out the nostalgia buttons would kill it.

1. Nostalgia.
2. Instantly recognizable - you can have a good idea what it is at a glance.
3. Icons that small don't need HD remakes.
4. Saves money and time better spent on something other than some icons.
5. Different icons would just be different for the sake of being different.

Eh.

Lots of programs use a picture of an old style disc as the save icon. Not to mention those people that keep putting the cross in the box in the top right for "exit".

More seriously, next to nobody will care about old icons. New icons that they think are ugly might annoy people, though.

If this is the most serious complaint you can think up about that game, then it must be a gargantuan masterpiece for the ages. And as others have said, when nostalgia is a big part of your game pitch, having nostalgic elements is kind of a "no duh".

They use them because people like me (played warcraft 1-3) love them, and his abilities would be similar to those he had as a deathknight in warcraft 3 frozen throne.

I like them, now go eat your cornflakes and let me enjoy them.

They're also re-used in WoW. Your point? They reused familiar assets in a game featuring characters from that universe. I don't see a problem with that, especially since a lot of people would easily associate those abilities with those icons if they're already familiar with Warcraft III or WoW... I mean Death Coil itself is in WoW and uses the exact same icon to mark the ability. Why change what ain't broke?

Congrats OP. Your complaint actually caused the community to rally around Blizzard in its defense. Quite the accomplishment.

Holly shit!
You couldn't get more united opinion, even if you asked about killing babies (some asshole would come out and speculate about terminal diseases, euthanasia and abortions- most probably me).
But here? No- everyone disagrees with OP.
Me too, BTW.

I see no reason for changing icons for same (more or less) abilities.
If something isn't broken, don't fix it.

P.S. And before someone comes out with "but stagnation" argument- stagnation IS broken state as well.

im sorry if i didnt respond sooner. arthas was a bad example. yes sometimes using the exact same sound, name, ability and icon is not bad, case in point: malfurion. i never played that guy and i didnt know what was his abilities but the moment he used tranquility i knew what was happening. i knew the voice and the ability so it was a good thing. the problem starts here:

these are the abilities of E.T.C. a front line tank. the first icon was used in warcraft for an ability that was an explosion (the goblin's kaboom i think) and the icon matches that. its a pillar of fire that is taking out many people. in E.T.C's case he slides a small amount and stuns people. excuse me if i dont see that in the icon. then there is his E. face melt. the icon is the one used as death coil for arthas. and they have nothing in common together. ok reusing icons from different games for nostalgia is not bad. better if they are the same. but reusing one in the same game, especially if they have nothing to do with each other is not a good thing. it reeks of laziness.

Edit: added the pic. 4 hours later and i just realized. great job brain. great job -.-

dont get me wrong the game has many problems but they either come from the game being new or stupid desicions. none of the come from being lazy but this one.

Well, to be fair, the icon is literally showing a melting face. So there's that.
