To be honest, I see what you mean (just wish I knew how to imbed movies so I could show you what I mean) somewhat. However, some bands seem to improve for me later. Partly because, I will admit, I'm into a more mainstream sound. However, I still prefer earlier Nine Inch Nails stuff (e.g. as late as The Hand That Feeds) in comparison to the latest album they released for free. It's good, there's no denying that, but it could of been so much better. As much as I like ambient music (e.g. I love A Warm Place), I just couldn't get into the latest album's offering of ambience and it lacked the addictive beat that Nine Inch Nails music used to have.

They got Linkin Park Syndrome. Lost Prophets fell for the same illness.
Also, i like the second song..
I loved Linkin Park and Lostprophets' older stuff. But I also love their new stuff too. I mean, Minutes to Midnight was a great album IMO, and have you heard For He's A Jolly Good Felon? People say the same about Muse, but I reckon The Resistance ranks just as highly up there with their other stuff like Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations.

Thing is, people complain when their favourite bands change their style, and it happens to everyone. Arctic Monkeys, Greenday, Nickelback, Korn, Paramore, and so on. But if these bands don't change then people complain they're becoming stale and too generic anyway. It's a lose-lose situation because the fans are never pleased. I understand now why Yahtzee doesn't like fans that much - you can never, ever, please any of them. Stop comparing older songs to newer ones by bands and just enjoy them for what they are. If you can't do that simple thing, then there's no hope for you and you don't deserve to be called a fan.

Just my two cents there. Although it should be two pence, I'm not Yank or Euro... :s

The only band I can think of is Metallica
Anything after the Black Album isn't my favorite(not saying I DON'T like any song at all off of Load or ReLoad, there were a couple. But St. Anger...)
I'm just glad Death Magnetic is closer to the old Metallica than the previous albums.
Yeah don't get me started on St. Anger. That was a TERRIBLE album. St. Shit is more like it.
I know right! Like, I thought Load and ReLoad were OK. Different from the normal Metallica sound, but at least those 2 albums had a couple decent songs. St. Anger was just....wtf were they thinking with that? No guitar solos, dated style(going with other bands at the time)etc. Death Magnetic should've either came out after ...And Justice for All or after the Black Album

I'm in a bit of a twist with The Gorillaz.
I totally liked their nameless debut.
(and G-sides, in a lesser extent, but still - didn't like 'Laika Come Home' though...)

Then Demon Days came along,
Mixed feelings at first, but it really started to grow on me.

Now it's Plastic Beach...
And I'm not feeling it, it's just too... mellow?
I dunno, maybe it takes some time, but I don't see it happening this time.

I'd much rather hear some stuff like 5/4, Clint Eastwood, Sound Check (Gravity) or M1 A1 again.

Not really anything else that has let me down, except for those already named (Linkin Park, Korn).

Monster Magnet, Rob Zombie, Ill Niño (granted, first one was still the best), The Prodigy, Spineshank (kinda)...
Still lookin' good.

That's exactly how I feel with the band Queen. During the 70s, Queen was awesome. Then the 80s came, Freddie grew a mustache, and it all went downhill from there

Well, Metallica is the big one for this, although Death Magnetic is a step forward (or rather, backwards).

I think a lot of third wave ska bands do this. For example, The Aquabats. They used to be one of the defining third-wave ska bands back in the day, and now they're barely even ska at all, just generic-y punk. Goldfinger did pretty much the same thing too.

Suburban Legends are still ska, but they're so shit these days. Back in the good old days with the old singer and of I Want More. Seriously, this annoys me so much. They used to be brilliant, properly amazing, and now they're crappy, poppy and Disney-ish.

I prefer my metal to be heavy thank you very much.
EDIT: Metallica suffers from this as well. I THINK it was either after ...And Justice For All or Ride the Lightning where they started to become generic.
Well, ...And Justice For All was great but a bit of an instrument-wank album, Master of Muppets is thrash-era Metallica refined to perfection (and in most people's opinions, thrash refined to perfection so it is a bit generic, but it is almost perfect so I think it can be forgiven. Except I prefer Anthrax so nah). The black album wasn't generic at the time, but it almost sounds it now because pretty much every metal band since then has been influenced by it in some way.

Aye, I liked Loads 'heavy/solid' sort of sound they went with. St. Anger sounded like Lars was bashing on a tin can or something. They should have just skipped that album altogether. Ah well what are ya gunna do.

This post isn't regarding the 'mainstream' debate raging above me - this post is actually on topic.
The Smashing Pumpkins were an amazing band. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Gish and Siamese Dream were, and still are, amazing albums. However when they split and then rejoined, with only two of the original members, they've started to suck. Zeitegeist or however its spelt, is a shame. It's kind of like ruining the image of the Smashing Pumpkins, because they thought they could milk another few years out of them.

Please stop, SP. You were amazing, now lets have other bands take over.
