Have you ever noticed how much we depend on electricity? My area was hit pretty hard by a storm yesterday, and the power has been out since. I've heard that power for vital services should be up in 4 days, but I've also heard that it will take upwards of 3 weeks to get the power back on everywhere. In the meantime, nothing in the area is open except waffle house, and I literally can't think of anything to do.

But this topic isn't to talk about my lack of power. It is to ask you, the fine members of this community, what would you do if you had no electricity for an extended period of time? (and by "you", I mean "everywhere within 50 miles of you".) Keep in mind, this means no gas stations are working, and if they are, the waits are long and the gas is rationed.

Write, read, play DS until it dies. Bike ride, stargaze.

Just a few things I'd do.

Light up a candle and read something. It is AWESOME to be reading by candlelight with a lightning storm outside.

It's never happened, I think I'd go insane. I love reading and could happily do that by candle/torch light but without the option of my computers I'd want them more.

Funnily the power once went out at my office, management wouldn't let us go home as they were paying us and they were hoping to get the power back on in time for us to do some work. So we just spent all day sitting outside a powered down office. Sounds awesome, was in fact incredibly boring.

Use my laptop until the battery is out. Then read the few books I have that I actually enjoy reading.

Everything I did when I was 9. Read a book, draw a picture, climb a tree, yell at birds, go for a walk, whip out the crank projector and watch an old reel-to-reel.

urban exploration - although it can be very dangerous and ambiguously legal, so research first. when all else fails, my life reverts to either 1. tarot and coffee, or 2. tabletop rpg's.

I break out my can of tennis balls and I juggle. It's a perfect time-waster for me. When I get bored of it, I usually read, or take a nap.

I cry. Cry manly tears.

If that doesn't bring back the internet, I just go eat something, or go to bed.

I would have to say, go around outside and look for interesting places, or places that are only interesting without electricity. Could be fun, could be boring as hell...

Wouldn't really be a problem for me since I have what is essentially a small Library in my room.

Break out the playing cards and read good books. Also, if I had it my way I would go to my car, hook up my laptop into the cig lighter, and use my dad's phone to tether and start a wifi zone.
