What to get? (Racing Genre)

Well, its that time of the year again, the time when I need to get a new racing game to fuel my entertainment engine. I've been looking around and i've noticed two very hyped games; Test Drive Unlimited 2 and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. Now, I really am split on which of these two is worth getting or if there is some game im overlooking that could trump both of these. I have an Xbox 360 by the way so no, not Gran Turismo 5. Also is Hot Pursuit a free roam, or is it only mission based because I do enjoy myself a good free-roam racing game. So which game should i get or are either of these even worth getting?

Also - NFS: Shift 2 is due out in late March, if you can wait that long.

Yah of racers are out, my comp can't even run Dirt 2 also I have no controller for the comp.

I can't say about any of those, but I can say that Need for Speed: Shift was the first racer I bought in ages and I absolutely adored it. Brilliant mix between high-octane arcade racing and simulation. Really got my blood pumping.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 sounds, and actually markets itself, as a game where you can socialize while walking around with your highly customizable avatar. I'm not even sure if there's any driving involved.

Some Need For Speed's are fun, but they're so arcadeish you can get bored quite soon. And the rubberband-gameplay is something that has stopped me playing those games after NFS: Underground (2?) or Carbon, or some title around that period. Seriously; once the only way to beat a race was to purposely drive behind the best AI driver and not overtake him until the very last lap, so the rubberband-overtake wouldn't have time to kick in.

Get DiRT 2. It's absolutely great fun. Racing wheel takes the off-road a bit seriously, but you can get around that. And if you like formula, then F1 2010 is not a bad choice. You can decide what assists you have on fairly accurately, so it works as a straightforward racing game, or a difficult simulation where you spin and crash all the time and can't even make a turn at first. Or any difficulty in between them.

I actually do have it as stated in one of my posts, but i cant run it on my PC and I dont wanna re-buy it for another console, it makes me always feel jipped. Is shift 2 gonna be any good, ya think cause the only Need For Speed game i've owned was Pro Street. It was fun for awhile, but got kinda monotonous.

Get tdu 2 it´s great to blow of steam after being stuck behind a senior on the way home.
Or you could get a realy fast car and drive way to fast.
And if that can´t put out your thirst for speed you can always go down to your local motorcykle dealer and buy a hayabusa and turbocharge it to 400bhp.
But then again it would be a bit sad if you ended up as a puddle of blood on the road..

I know, but just checked. As it is the best game I could recommend. I've never understood the reason for it, but many users here don't mind buying the same game for different platforms.

I've played at least 9 different Need For Speeds on the PC, through the last 14 years. And the quality of the series does vary greatly. Carbon was a bit too frustrating and Undercover was just unplayable, so I haven't tried any NFS games after that. At least Shift appears to be something they've done right for a change. And at least we know that Shift 2 is going to look good (on PC), but they can just fuck it up in some silly way. You can never know beforehand.

I'd recommend to forget that Sims Unlimited 2. I mean forget Test Drive Unlimited 2. And pick up Shift, if you want something NFS. If you want something that's more of a simulation with the best driving experience, you can always pick anything that's done by Codemasters.

And if you don't yet have a racing wheel controller and pedals... I'm just saying it makes every aspect of driving a hell of a lot better.

Burnout series is one of the best racing series IMO.

I myself am eagerly awaiting NFS: Shift 2 for PC. I bought a wheel a while ago and tried Grid, Dirt 2, and Race 07. None of them clicked for me, Grid felt kind of hollow, Dirt 2 didn't like my computer, and Race 07, while having the best force feedback I've experienced is a hard core sim and as such kind of beyond my meagre skills. Shift however was like Baby Bear's porridge, Juust right. A perfect mix of sim and arcade, with that skinner box upgrade system that sucks me in every time.
