When it isn't fun, it's done. I'm still playing Fallout 3, because I keep finding these tiny mini-quests. And that's still fun, so I'm not done. That rhymes, too.

If the game has an ending where the credits roll and it resets to the title screen... achieving that is beating the game. If not, then 100% completion is required.
I've had the credits roll on me four times in GT5, but I still haven't beaten the damn thing... because it never resets to the title screen. Also, endurance races are long.

If wer'e talking abou a linear game like Portal 2 then the end credits will suffice until a second playthrough. Sandbox on the other hand is when you're happy with you're place in that world. In Oblivion I haven't done much in Chorrel because I don't like that city. Skipping it doesn't make me feel any less fullfilled ten if I'd done quests there.

Beating the main story. Everything else, let it be side-quests, finding artifacts etc. is just a side thing... ergo, side-quest

I think I've completed a game when I've experienced everything the developers wanted me to experience, without sacrifices countless hours for random collectables for achievements.

Usually getting through the story missions, but it can also be playing until I accomplish my personal goals.

Tend to be sandbox/ RPG

They are usually:
Build a thief/assassin
Collect items I want
Get more dakka

Tend to be FPS

Unlock special guns/cheats
Playthrough stealthy as possible
Find all the hidden cheese*

Beating the Story or main quest.

Anything in outside of the Story I class as being part of the Sandbox. You cannot complete the sandbox as long as you still have imagination.

100% Just means you have completed everything the Developer has thought up for you to do.

I wish games simply had a long immersive storyline i could play through maybe a few times because i'm one of those people that like to completel everything, but i'm not quite a 100%er.

So to me completing a game is doing main story and all the main challenges and side missions.

Beating all the main story missions. If I find the game too boring to continue with, I suually end it at the next plot point or osmething.

Beating all the missions, bosses, and collecting all the collectibles I care to collect, and have acquired all of the trophies I care to collect. That's completing it for me. All subsequent playthroughs are up to me, whether I want to do all that stuff or not. Usually, yes, I still want to do it again.
