What, truly, is Facebook?

Well, I "use" Facebook to see what some people have been doing, and to laugh at what miserable shells of a life that people have become. I also, however, like to voice my opinion on current issues. I don't say anything too edgy or racy, since it is linked to my actual being. I do like the fact that people I actually know will read it and maybe even think about what I say now and again.

Interesting you should mention "edgy or racy" because I'll occasionally direct a little friendly innuendo at my female college friends, but for the most part it's thoughtful content that isn't too far out-there for the business associates who have me as FB friends.

I don't think I've ever dropped an F-bomb on it either. I said "shit" once (in the context of a link I posted to Rammstein's "Feuer Frei", I said "blow shit up"), but that's as far as my language has ever gone.

Facebook is a way of keeping in touch with cousins and old schoolfriends. It's also great for local bands and businesses, such as Counter Propaganda [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Counter-Propaganda/30587433972?ref=ts], a Dublin-based clothes shop.

Also, I like to give people a smile-inducing insight into my otherwise rather trivial existence. Or something like that.

I just use it to talk to friends I otherwise would not be able to speak to, as well as to link people to awesome things as I travel through the vast complexity of the internets.

But I can see the shallow side as well. There seem to be plenty of people I've friended that seem to do nothing but talk about themselves, things they did, or items that they have acquired. A rather annoying waste of space on an otherwise nifty (albeit buggy) site.

That's funny, I swear like a trooper on that thing, say lots of suggestive and rude stuff, etc. And yes, plenty of my "business associates" are my friends, but then it is the music industry which has very different norms about these things. You're considered untrustworthy in the music industry if you don't use foul language.

The likes of Facebook and Myspace are very handy marketing tools as proven to me by my brother. He is a DJ and the two social networking sites have allowed him to gain quite a large fanbase and distribute music aswell as opening up a portal where people can sign up to his record label. For all the garbage that people might associate with them (i.e. fucking mafia wars) they have their uses and it's down to the person using it to exploit them.

I use it all the time as I moved to Spain a year ago (from England) so it is very handy for keeping in contact with my friends in the UK.
