A month or so ago, a friend of mine bough BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. This initially meant absolutely nothing to me, because I was always terrible at 2D fighters due to my upbringing of Tekken and Soul Calibur. After a very epic intro, he popped us onto the Character screen.

The first thing I saw was this:

and instantly knew who/what I was going to be playing as for a fair while.

Everyone always seems to make an attachment to a particular kind of character depending on what the player is like, and for me, it was always the peculiar/out there character.

So my question to you: What kind of character tickles your fancy?

I was going to make a poll, but I think there are too many options out there for it to be fair.

The Reggae one. Which is why I'm excited for Brink. Bob Marley colors. In Mortal Kombat I always picked the drunk dude.

Intelligent ones

I've always hated playing the warrior or the idiot man child. Give me a mage or some black ops commando or just the character that actually puts thought into what they're doing. Not the meatsheild or the grunt.

I usually like the off-color characters in games as well. SOmetimes those are the biggest challenge to master the techniques off but when you do it's damn well worth it.

Example for me is Voldo from Soul Calibur. Whenever i select him amongst my friends I'm always getting the weird looks...until i beat the ever-loving shit out of them.

You sound like a friend of mine, actually. He prides himself on always, ALWAYS picking the "weird" characters like Voldo, Amingo, Arakune, Zappa, etc. But unlike him, I'll bet you're not nearly as annoying about it.

My friend did that too. He immediately saw Arakune and knew who he was playing as. I did not approve.

I also saw a character in BlazBlue that I knew I would love:
I mean look at her, not only does she have an cat that also functions as an umbrella, but she's also unbelievably cute!

This made me laugh, because I do the exact same thing. That dude has got some redonkulous moves. Did you ever play Tekken 6? Zafina is like a toned-down version.

Not unless you count laughing at the people i beat when they're throwing hissy fits.

I always considered Eddy to be that way.

Romantic and funny, but also sneaky and backstabbing. My kind of character.

I usually always go for the quick agile aand one shot one kill characters when I can. They just attract me, being the sneaky little b*****d that I am.

The sneaky cute female assassin type.

Examples: Ayane - DoA, Cammy - Street Fighter, Kitana - Mortal Kombat & so on.

Hell yes, Arakune! I love that guy!

We're referring to fighting games, right? I usually alternate between the really weird, strangely designed characters with unusual play styles and the faster characters that still have a bit of attack power to back them up.

I like the smart villains. The ones who actually think about their actions beyond evil or the ones who have a good reason for being evil. My favorite example is John Henry Eden from Fallout 3. He's a smooth-talking, likable person but is secretly planning to kill almost everyone in the wasteland, but actually has a good reason to do so.

The wise, sage-like or father figure characters who know what the hell they're doing. Unless they're assholes.

It honestly depends on the game. I'll usually go for a certain theme or other, but I can go for a character I completely overlooked in one game if it makes sense in another game. In general, if I've got the option I'll play the sneaky character. I'll also occasionally go for the quirky one - I remember playing the short dinosaur thing in Unreal Tournament (which would mess up everyone else's head shot potential).

I played Super Street Fighter 4 for the first time and then I saw her.............

Her name's Juri. She's a perfect match for me. She's now one of my main fighters.

Edit: She does as she pleases. Even Seth doesn't like her. Plus, she likes spicy food.

EDIT 2: I like the antihero, average people, and silent characters. Sometimes, the hero.
