So, I'm thinking about upgrading my (barely functioning) flip phone, and I was hoping to get an idea as to what others are using.

I'm not too keen on anything Apple, given their price, though I'd LOVE to replace my current music player.

I'm using a PSP2k, and yes it's as awkward as it sounds, because the Classic iPods are too damn high in price. :(

I am currently using my LG Nexus 5

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_nexus_5-5705.php

(This thing)

There is an updated version of it (Nexus 6) but I can't comment on it's quality. I chose this guy because I wanted to get a higher-end smart phone without the higher end price and a phone that WASN'T the size of a freaking tablet.

The Nexus 5 was the smallest phone they had with the power I wanted while not being stupid-expensive. In the words of the T-Mobile guy; The Nexus 5 is pretty on-par with the really high end phones without the high-end price (...relative to other phones that is It was about $300 when I got it).

I use a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Got it summer of last year and I'm quite satisfied with it. I can't even remember what my previous phones were. They were ok, but they got bricked fairly quickly. This one's working quite well for me.

EDIT: Except for the fact that I have tiny hands that sometimes don't work very well with the size of the phone.

I use a Google/LG Nexus 5. It is a relatively cheap phone that can still kept up with some of the higher-end ones from 2013-2014. Granted, the camera and audio may not be as good as an iPhone or Galaxy, but I haven't found anything to complain about. For the price, it is very hard to beat. Too bad that Google decided to go with an expensive phablet (albeit still cheap compared to the 6 Plus and Note 4) for the Nexus 6.

If you go with Verizon, I would very much advise looking into the Motorola Moto X. I have heard a lot of great things about that phone and sort of regret not being with a carrier that has it.

After that, it is sort of hard to mention any well-known phones. If you're concerned about the iPhone 6's price, then that would probably also rule out the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, LG G3, and Sony Xperia Z3, since those are about as much as an iPhone 6. I'd advise staying away from any Windows phone for now, since they really don't have the same app support that Android has. BlackBerry's problem is arguably worse, and their CEO is...yeah... [http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2015/01/22/blackberry-ceo-to-congress-make-blackberry-apps-mandatory/]

I guess you could also look at some mid-range Android phones. I've heard some good things about Samsung's mid-range phones, even if they don't sell well.

This piece of shit. It's a Nokia something.

Picture is taken from the new Salma Hayek trailer. I can't believe we have the same phone.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. And it's not yellow. Nice size, decent battery life, good specs. And the screen durability. Don't know if it's all of Samsung's phones or this model in particular, but I literally dropped my phone from my hoodie pocket while walking my dog, kicked it in mid-stride, sent it sprawling across the asphalt, and it didn't have a scratch on the screen. I literally drop-kicked my phone into the road and the screen plain didn't give a fuck. 10/10

I used to have an Sony Xperia Ray but I replace it with an Samsung Galaxy Ace 4.

Overall it's a huge improvement (especially the battery life) but it took some time getting used to (new layout and finding out where the option located etc). Heck I am still trying get used to it (I bought it last Winter)!

Samsung S3. Functional, doesn't overheat and lock up even in a dense rubbery otter box (not the garish colored ones, but the a black one) case. Battery drains kinda quick with GPS on, or reading digital comics, but otherwise reliable. Not really a gaming phone, though.

I just upgraded from an iPhone 5, to an iPhone 6 plus. It's a powerhouse that goes all day.

Galaxy S5. Great phone, relatively straight forward, good screen size. Only issue is that it gets quite hot with intensive use.

A month ago I upgraded from iPhone 4s to a Motorola Google Nexus 6 and it's flipping amazing. I just had enough of Apple and it's restrictions and it's OS was just boring. Now that I am back on Android, I feel at home. Widgets are fun, linking info with my Nexus 6 to my Nexus 7 tablet is quick and easy, battery life is amazing too cause with heavy use, I haven't charged my phone for over 48 hours now and it's on 40%. Quick and easy to use and you can make it your own personal phone to fit you. Camera is great too with clear and detailed pics. Only problem is with video it has a UHD 2K setting with is okay but useless if you haven't got a 4K screen to play it back on. If you have small hands, the phone will be too big for you so best to get a Nexus 5, but I have huge hands so it's perfect for me. Yes, I sound like a Nexus fanboy but whatever. I have had the tablet for over a year now and going strong and now the phone and it feels good. You can also get a great deal on it on contract (in UK) without paying so much each month.

Side Note: What many smart phone uses don't realise when it comes to battery life, if you have Location (GPS) and 3G/4G on all the time, it will drain your battery like a leaking pipe. Use Wifi as much as you can and only use location (GPS) if you need to find something somewhere. You don't need to show your location via social media all the time.

Added question to anyone. how does US phone deals compare and differ to UK phone deals? Similar to broadband or a bit better/worse?

+1 for the S4 here. had it for a round a year or so IIRC, no issues so far. battery life is pretty decent (as far as smartphones go at least), the music player has a few nice features, and has expandable storage through microSD cards. I'll admit the size might be an issue for some, personally I wouldn't ever go bigger than the S4, but it's still manageable.

oh, big plus (for me at least) is the fact that you can replace the battery! most smartphones do not have this basic functionality, but most of the samsung S series have it, so if the battery stops holding charge it's super easy to solve that problem

Another for the Samsung S4 here. I just replaced my Samsung Galaxy S with the S4 this fall. I have been very happy with my Samsungs.

From what I could see the S4 was much closer in specs to the S5 than the S3 was to the S4 so I didn't bother with that since it would have cost me another $99 (as opposed to free with a contract). So that may be worth considering.

Anyhoo, I've been happy with it for music player, phone, internet browser, camera and apps.

I have a Samsung-something or other, I really don't pay that much attention to phone makes. Apparently it looks like a Blackberry, but I think it was pretty outdated when I bought it years ago. I really should update to something more modern as the battery life is getting shorter and its getting a bit tempermental. But every time I walk in a phone shop to have a look around, I can never find anything that I like the look of. So, it'll probably be this one until it breaks.

My current daily driver is a Sony Xperia Z2, if you are after a media player you should try and get to use any of the Sony Xperia phones. Maybe get a demonstration in a shop if a friend doesn't own one, the Walkman software they have is the flatout best music software I have used on any phone. It organises well, sounds great and has flexible options for playlists and receiving streams and is as simple or as complex as you like.

If you can stretch your budget try and get a Z2 or Z3 as well, the active noise cancellation when using the right headphones has to be heard to be believed. You can be on a noisy train with the volume down low and no external sound intrudes, just don't cycle with it or anything.

Phone and camera wise the Z2 is unexceptional and slots in amongst the competition, slightly larger battery than some but nothing that really sets it apart.

Ancient by now, Nokia 6060 I got in 2006. Only had to replace battery so far, but you probably aim for smartphone instead of another flip.

I use a Samsung Monte S5620. Google tells me that it came out in 2010, but it feels a lot older than that. Its alright, I get along with it. I only use it to call and text, and anything else, I have an iPod Touch for. I would love to get an iPhone so that I can stop carrying around 2 phones in my pocket at all times, but I don't use my phone enough to justify a contract, and without a contract, it is pretty much a small fortune. I think im fine with my phone and iPod for now.

I got my first smartphone this Christmas.

It's an iPhone 5C and I love it. I have no real point of comparison but I prefer the Apple aesthetics and I already had an iPad so it's nice that I can sync them.
