What character has the most intriguing backstory or motives, for you? What character do you enjoy learning more about the most? This does not necessarily mean the player character in any game, it could be any character.

A few characters that have always interested me have been Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, Illidan Stormrage from Warcraft, and the Prince from the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Each of those three characters seek redemption in one way. While they all have varying results, I have always liked each of these characters and found their tales to be interesting.

I'd always thought the story behind the Spartans in Halo was interesting, both the II's and III's. It really demonstrates the desperation humanity was in. Quite tragic, having to sacrifice the innocent in order to make a greater weapon.

The Big Daddies, Yahtzee put it better than I ever could. Also the history behind the vaults and Enclave in Fallout games is really cool. Also also the templars in AC.

For me it's Emiya Shirou from Fate/Stay Night ^^ His story ( including the one of his future self ) is so tragic and awesome ( well i know those words sounds kind of bland but i can't seem to find the right words since it's so fucking great )
Then again if Yahtzee saw this i guess he'd find all the flaw ( or run away since he seems to dislike japanese games pretty much or just their rpg maybe)

Going to sound old but the character that intriqued me most in my gaming experience was Sarevok from the Baulder's Gate series. He starts out as your antagonist in the first game, you get to find out hes your half sibling before destroying him. In II there are clues hes not as destroyed as you may think then BAM in Throne of Bhaal hes back asking for a piece of your soul to become ressurected. Hes really a tortured character who went threw a lot and it twisted him and in the end even if you change his alignment his brutal nature proves to be his ultimate downfall. Hes so tragic so torn I went from absolutely hating him to wanting to build parties around him and keeping him evil then changing his alignment to see how the character evolves.

Till this day though I play many other games his character is one I think about and gets me to fire up Baldur's Gate every once in awhile for Nostalgia reasons.

The character that has probably affected me most while I was controlling his story was Arthas. His fall was just beautiful, yet tragic... I loved it and when he came back home and he said

"Succeeding you, father."

It managed to impress me a lot. Now, I don't know if it was because I was younger and more impressionnable, but no other character had such an effect on me since.

However, a close runner up would have to be Niko Bellic. I think it's maybe because I too have moved to civilization from Eastern Europe and I could very easily identify with the character (bar the violent past and mass-murdering tendencies). His story was touching; I found it very interesting.

Sure, most vide game characters are interesting, but these two might have had the most impact on me as a person.

Viconia from BG2. May not qualify, since it's not what you find out about her that is the key, it's how you do it. The dialogues you have with her are awesome. There's also Mordin from ME2, in his loyalty mission he truly earned my respect. Ooh, can't forget The Nameless One! That's my pick. Forget the rest, he's the by far most interesting one.

Pretty much anybody in the Bioshock universe.

I love hearing about how they all decided to go live in Rapture, and what happened to them once they got there.

Legion from ME2 was a living database of Geth information.

Geth are so fascinating to me, yet I'm unsure why.

Probably the begining of the Enclave, I would play it and buy it if it were DLC, you know maybe a 4-5 hour experience about the founding where you play as one of the leaders or something.

Arthas in Warcraft 3. The human campiagn was my favourite part of the game in terms of story, particularly from about level 5 onwards.

Yeah, I said Illidan, but Arthas is up there too. Arthas is very Darth Vader like. I mean, he is almost a textbook tragic hero, straight from a Shakespearean play.

Yeah. I'd even venture to say that Arthas is even more Darth Vader than the Darth Vader whine-baby from the recent Star Wars trilogy. Why didn't George Lucas go to the same writing school as Blizzard and Shakespear? Just talking about this is making me want to go back and play some Warcraft III.

And you know, I haven't played WoW in years (my highest character was a 54 mage on my younger brother's account anyway) but when I heard that Arthas had gone down to some guild for the first time... I was sad. Frozen Throne ended so well. I always unconsciously imagined that Arthas will always be there as a villain, like how Joker is always there for Batman.

Chell in Portal is a fascinating character... not in what we're given in-game of course, but because of what could be done with her. The experience of the Center, god only knows what it's done to her mental state (I just have this thing for mentally breaking characters. Tennenbaum of Bioshock is another character I'd love to sit down and have a chat session with, to see what was going on in her mind.). What sort of phobias she might have developed, if she would have trouble relating to people afterward, if she'd never believe what comes out of someone's mouth... gah. So fun. And let's not even start on GLaDOS' issues.

... -cough- But yeah. Any character who has the potential to be, or is, an emotional basket case waiting to explode is always of interest to me.
