She makes an incredible character when you realize that you were the one to make her what she is. It makes watching her actions extraordinarily interesting, and actually fostered a connection between me and her. She was my daughter and I was damn well going to protect her.
I'm always wondering where they come from, because in none of these games do you see the society from wich originate. You only see the desolate place to wich they travel, but you know they live in some sort of city or community.
I loved those characters for the simple fact that they existed, and you had to make your own backstory.
On a more recent note, while I despise the game, I love how in the beginning cinematic of Borderlands it shows Brick playing with a puppy. Flash forward to game-time, and he wears the paw on his necklace.
My all-time favorite character, however, is either the Joker as portrayed in Arkham or anyone from Sly Cooper.
I would have to say Eleanor and Jack from the Bioshock games, maybe "Tommy Topside" (aka Subject Delta). come to think of it almost everyone in Rapture, Ryan, Atlas, Fontaine, Tannenbaum, Gil Alexander, Suchong, Sander Cohen...
It's such a deep and complex history! (I LOVE THAT!!)
from Half-Life(2):
Eli Vance, Barney Calhoun,(not Alyx weirdly) any of the Vortigaunts really... And of course: G-man
Fallout 3:
so many to choose from... Harold and Bob/Herbert, mostly because of all the shit they've seen/been through. Herbert Dashwood, Sarah Lyons, Charon, and let's not forget Fawkes and Uncle Leo!
That's all I got now, but I would love to sit down and chat with ALL of those guys...
Although he is a very cold and ruthless character you still feel bad
because of his backstory is quite tragic. Lied to and used by both the gods and
even the titans for their own selfish gain for years. You can see why he has become
so cold and ruthless, but you still see that he cares about others in certain parts of
the story.

I'd have to say that Durandal, the rampant AI from Marathon, is the single best video game character of all time. The simple fact that, since I've played Marathon, not a single game character has moved me as much as he, is shocking. He's the reason the games were so self-aware (I mean, seriously, guys, you thought Portal and Bioshock were the first games to discuss your inability to choose?). He was evil, except not. He was capricious, entirely self-centered, and had a wicked sense of humor, not to mention he was incredibly intelligent; no other character has made me feel like I was truly matching wits with them, no character would fake his death so effectively, no other character would return, triumphant as ever, and tell you just how pathetic you were and making you accept it...
Except maybe Tycho, Durandal's archnemesis, and the reason Durandal faked his death. He once teleported me into space because I had the gall to defy him. His personality was just as noticeable and distinct; despite the characters never speaking, you could just feel how different they were. Tycho's ultimate choice to align with the evil Pfhor was shocking indeed, but not entirely unexpected.
Max Payne's awesome.
Adrian Shepherd is awesome, but I have no idea why.
Captain Price has been in every IW-created Call of Duty game, and is without a doubt the most awesome, memorable character in the franchise.
The G-Man is cheap as hell, but still enigmatic enough for me to be interested.
Andrew Ryan actually gets interesting in Bioshock 2.
Wrex is awesome, Ashley is great (partly because of her unwitting racism and partly because of her not overtly religious nature; watching her sort of struggle with this idea of being wronged and trying to get past it is fascinating, if underplayed), Tali is ridiculously adorable. I would have said Liara but she grew up too fast and to wrong. Jacob's kinda cool; I like hanging around with him.
Sten and Leliana are awesome together, as are Wynne and Shale, Oghren and Leliana, and Alastair and Morrigan. However, Wynne gets even better when she offers to give Spike a tail. (Spike being the name I give to my dog because it's almost as cheesy as Rover and doesn't put me in mind of a giant floating bubble.)
Oghren is utterly AMAZING in Awakenings, and I can't believe he was so boring before. WOW! Utter win. On the flip side, Wynne sucked in Awakenings; she basically goes "hey dude, what's up, go find someone in the forest I need her help kthx." The friendship I'd spent the entire game crafting was gone, just like that. I liked Nathaniel Howe too, and Justice was okay, but not nearly as awesome as he should have been. The Architect intrigues me lots and I hope to see him in future games.
Leliana is both adorable and badass, a lot like Liara, except a bit more awesome.
...but yeah. Durandal's the best. The only reason you can say he isn't is because you haven't played through all the Marathon games.
Oh, yeah, and Sergeant Johnson wins on account of being so badass even the Flood wouldn't touch him, and they're zombies!
Still so much mystery about her and what exactly she did with Aperture Science and what she plans to do in the future. It makes me wonder if she has anything to do with the Combine and the events of the Half-Life games.

I've got a theory that the Combine gutted Aperture tech sometime after they came to earth, and GLaDOS became the Overwatch voice... and there's the one where she's an example of someone being killed and their brain turned AI.
Funny, I felt like the Prince from Sands of Time was a whiny man-*****. Didn't care for him at all, especially not because he consistentily refused to do as I instructed him to, and hurled himself at enemies, spikes and into bottomless pits.
I'm with OP on Illidan Stormrage, though. Arthas, the Lich King, also intrigues me. Mentioning the G-man seems obligatory, but he's pretty interesting. Oh, Jim Raynor from Starcraft, I'd love to hear more about him.
Legion from mass effect 2.
He's a geth... THAT TALKS! And he's voice, one of the coolest voices I ever heard. He also has an interesting personality and backstory. And he has a frickin' HOLE in his torso!
