How has no one mentioned FF6?!, to me that is one of Nobuo Uematsu's greatest pieces of work.

I love the soundtrack to Final Fantasy XII, it's one of the most interesting and thematically sound of the Final Fantasy soundtracks. Definately one of my favorites in that series.

Wind Waker, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Headhunter... Bioshock has some really good ironic music too, but most of the best aspects aren't original songs.

Oh yeah, I mentioned Wind Waker, but Majora's Mask has an amazing soundtrack too. Some really creepy stuff in there, and the music that plays in the final hours before the moon hits is outstanding.
I miss Wind Waker and its amazing music :[

F Zero... and the S4 league. Those come to mind first. I actually liked the music from VTM: Bloodlines and also Deus Ex: invisible war.

I forgot about Kelly Bailey! He's pretty awesome too.

And, one more: Aquaria. Great soundtrack, as befits a game about using music to cast spells.

...how could I forget Tetris? It may have only had 3 songs, but they were awesome.
Although the orchestral version on SSBB is amazing.

I think Chrono Cross had the best soundtrack ever in a video game. Number two is probably Shadow of the Colossus.

People have already mentioned a few of my favorites like Beyond Good and Evil and Mirror's Edge, but the soundtrack in Mass Effect is one of the best I've heard in a game. It matches the mood and setting of the game's level's perfectly, especially the music that plays on Noveria and the background music for The Normandy's Star Map.

I've been playing Mirror's Edge as of late (instead of doing homework) and I've found that I'm really interested with the soundtrack and the way it perfectly melds with the action. So that got me wondering, what game do you guys think has the best soundtrack?
ME has a soundtrack? Or do you mean that incredibly loud constant machine rumble/screech that induces the same migraine as the game's shinyness does?

Final Fantasy 6. Just pure gold. Doom also has a good soundtrack that fits the mood. Back in the days music had more importance, now you don't notice it that much anymore.

i've not played it but from the vids i've seen i'm saying World of Goo, it brings me happy in the mornings.

The village music from Zelda games, it actually chills me out, I praised the God of analogue controls in OOT so I can actually have Link stroll through the village at a leisurely pace as it plays its melody, and the music of Gerudo fortress, i'm a sucker for salsa and baroque!.

in Half Life 2 Epidode 2, during the second wave of stryder attacks some seriously shit hot thing of a track comes on, I was actually dancing in my seat as I played that game while the music played, a stryder got too close to the silo and ended my game.... but i was not frustated at all, I got to reload from an earlier point to fight he stryders again... AND I got to listen to that track.
Anyone know the name of the track i'd much appreciate it.
