The honorable Towel!

Because only the really experienced always remembers to take a Towel with them.

You could use it as a whip, maybe as makeshift armor or perhaps use it as a diversion to obscure their sight whilst you delicately swivel around their backs?
Damn. This guy really knows where his towel is!

Don't forget a bottle of water, so you can wet it for use in hand to hand combat!

Hmm, probably an infinite improbability drive scaled down into a laser pointer-like device.

A Portal gun, so I could leap off the Sydney Opera House and launch myself halfway across the city, all while drinking Fosters, speaking indecipherably, and boxing a kangaroo (That's what Australians do, isn't it?). WITH MY BARE DAMN HANDS.

Oh, and if I can have two items, I'd take along the heel-springs as well so I'm not reduced to a pile of strawberry jam if I miss the portal.

A Henshin belt.

Who knows when shit will go down, and I need to turn into a fighter of justice?

Pen-knife.

It's really the most effective thing I can carry with me, with my excuse being "I don't carry it with the intent of harming".

Under our laws, a grappling gun is a weapon, a laser is a weapon, just about most things that can harm you can think of.

- Grappling hook is nice and useful (if it works as well as Rorschach's, and other vigilantes', does.
- Bullet-proof vest (few can be Ozymandias and catch bullets).
- Wristbands with several uses, like spraying paralyzing/neutralizing gas, short-range laser, keep small tools for breaking into places and cutting free from bad situations, an uncrackable self-destruct option (take them by surprise without getting it used against you!), a watch (what? I want to know the time a lot of times!), and if I could push it so far, also be a Web Launcher (epic way of disarming people or immobilizing them them).
- A towel (must never forget to carry one with you!)
- Night-vision goggles (you're not an owl or guided by sonar radar, I assume).
- Pen-knife is an excellent idea!
- Another stretch: Captain America's shield (with the function that it goes back to you after it's finished wrecking havoc; plus, I don't think there's a law against carrying a shield).

If I must choose one: The wristbands for its many uses, bullet-proof vest in second place and grappling hook in third. (sorry, but I don't trust the towel that much)

I am assuming Sci-Fi series gadgets are allowed too? In that case the Ancient Shield Device from SGA should come in handy.

For night-time, a high powered LED light with strobe function, can disorientate an attacker briefly for you to run or fight back. Also a handful of loose change is also pretty good, it's a natural human response to try and block stuff thrown at you, you get a few moments where they're caught completely off-guard.

I'd go for a sock with half a brick in it, or a set of pliers. Both are very easy to come by and hideously dangerous when used properly.
