A bit late to jump on the bandwagon, as always, but today I spent the day watching all the Death Note episodes, and the one thing I came away with it was: What was Light thinking!?

Of course this is all about Misa. Light didn't show the slightest bit of interest towards her besides manipulating her, and I was literally sat there all the way through like "What the fuck!?"
Not only is Misa genuinely hot for a cartoon, she was one of the sweetest girls there was, and to be honest I'd look past the annoying stuff if that was the case. And to top it off, to inflate Light's ego, she was a model! All the time Light showed no interest in her and was busy chasing the plainest girl ever.

Was anyone else left thinking "What the fuck!?"?

You said it yourself, she was annoying. And Light said himself he could basically have any girl he wanted so he didn't care. After a certain point he just wanted to be a god and everyone was beneath him.

He was an Egomaniacal madman with a self-righteous attitude. He didn't care about her, but he saw potential for her to be useful in his plans, he also was afraid that if he upset her she might kill him when he first met her.

He didn't seem to care for girls to begin with, to pre-occupied with become the god of a new world.

Light had the right idea

Though you cannot argue with Joseph Ducreux, he cannot be applied in this instance. Light didn't want money, just to be a god.

That was part of his character. Light was so self-absorbed that he could not see the value in other humans beyond his own purposes.

This.
He had higher goals than just getting the girl.

he wanted to make the world a better place, but did it in a fucked up way.

Look at Code Geass, Lelouch and Light are a lot alike, but Lelouch has a key difference about him, he has a fucking soul.

At least when Shirley died, he changed his whole plan to destroy Birtania.

Before she died, he was planing to take over the Geass group, but after she died and found out Geass was behind it, he opted to destory the whole damn thing.

for instance also, season 2, when him and shirley where talking, she was talking a bout a train cart, and you could see the pain in his eyes about what he had done.

Light only cares for himself, and sees himself as a god, so he looks down on others. but as you may notic, he keeps her alive even after L's death, and Ren wasn't there to protect he, so he could've killed her at any time, but left her alive for six years, despite how annoying he finds her, so you know he cares for her in some way or another
I actually find myself fond of Misa, too. Sure, she's annoying as hell, but I actually find something strangely likable about her.

That's because Light was a narcissistic egomaniac. He would only hit it off with someone who truly shared his vision on the intellectual level he did, IIRC, he meets a short-haired girl later in the series who also has a death note. She is older and more intelligent if less pretty than Misa and they understand each other perfectly. He had more true respect and love for her than he did Misa.

Misa is shallow in her own way, not the traditional "I'm the most important person ever way". She works on an emotional level. Her parents were avenged by Light. They weren't brought back, they weren't saved. But it felt good to have a sense of justice. She then idealizes Light as justice itself in human form, and she willingly allows herself to be his slave. She asked to be used, why not oblige? She wants it, Light wants it. Neither one of them has a problem with it. She is a slave of her own free will, and it's a completely consensual mental relationship. She was also really annoying, as you said.

If you think Misa is sweet, you weren't paying attention. For fuck's sake, she killed people just to get his attention! And it's not like Light ever wanted any woman. Anyone he showed interest to, it was to use them. Misa had the eyes, Takada was a way to keep focus off of Misa's connection to him (and later, more) and the first girl he took on a date was just to set his plan in motion.

Besides, we all know the only one he saw as worthy of Light was L.

Actually, when they die, you're not screwed. Ya follow?

Anyway, Light's problem? Constipated. You could tell by the look on his face.

Light was a manipulative egomaniac with a god complex. He was above such petty concerns as respect for another human being and saw them only as tools to further his own goals. The only exceptions were L and Near, because they were the only ones who could meet him on an intellectual level. In any case, he was far too obsessed with building his own perfect world and getting rid of obstacles to bother with stuff like that.

Long story short, Light had more important things on his mind than sex.

It's widely accepted that Light was asexual. I mean, he pretends to be intrested in a pin-up magazine to seem like normal guy and the only time he ever sleeps with anyone is to futher his goals.
