Most recently?

Penumbra Overture, never before have I been so afraid of an encounter with a wolf in a game. People weren't lying when they said that game had atmosphere.
This, a thousand times this!

The gleaming eyes in the dark, the blood freezing howls. The fact that you know that you may be dead in a gory way within a few seconds of carelessness. And later on it gets even more scary.
Got that with the Indie Humble Bundle and it scared me half to death when I was waiting behind a box for the first wolf to come around the corner.
Me and my trusty hammer pulled through though!

Did you play on easy? Otherwise there's no way you could have killed it the first time D:

[small]I always play on hard for maximum horror experience[/small]

Hmm, haven't played many horror games myself, so I'm gonna have to say the Dunwich building in Fallout 3, mainly because I love Lovecraft and it was actually pretty frightening (I wasn't really expecting it, the rest of Fallout 3 isn't frightening at all).

on consoles: any of the fatal frame series

on PC: a game called Scratches, need to play it again cause i never finished it, also some game i think was called 'Evidence" you were tracking a serial killer to find a victim they kidnapped, the game would actually e-mail you pretending to be the killer, made me paranoid as hell

Probably Dead Space, almost gave me nightmares..

Followed by Halo 1 the Flood Mission, havent played too many scary games though
The flood were really quite well presented in the first one. Less scary on the other 2, because you knew they were coming.

Super Mario Brothers 3 (Bought it on virtual console). That shit is horrifically difficult.

I remember watching my brother play Silent Hill 3.

That game freaked me out of my little 10 year old mind. I never looked at bunnies the same way after that.

Clock Tower. But then again, the only "horror"-games I've played other than that are Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5 and Bioshock.

Hello Kitty Island of Adventure.

Sriously: F.E.A.R, but then, I don't play to many horror games. I find MW2 with friends terrifying...

Let's see...

System Shock 2 is high up there. Recently dethroned by Penumbra: Overture, which became less scary once I could pickaxe everything to death (on Hard, no less) and take little damage. Still scary, mind.

This, in turn, got replaced even more recently by Penumbra: Black Plague. That game is just... gah.

Incidentally, if you need a fluffy cute platformer to relax afterwards, I suggest the following: http://zarat.us/tra/offline-games/eversion.html

About as soothing as games get, if a bit difficult.

Condemned... It is without a doubt the scariest game I have ever played.
Not only is it "jump out at you" scary, but it really liked to fuck with your head.

EDIT: The dream levels in Max Payne deserve a mention too. For being shit scary moments in a not-so-scary game.

Mass Effect. "OHGODOHGODOHGOD DON'T DIE SHEPARD, I DON'T WANT TO REVERT TO THAT CUTSCENE AGAIN"

Seriously? Hmmm. Dead Space, even if it was more startling than anything else.
