Condemned was terrifying at times. Condemned 2 was the worst sequel I've ever played but Condemned was brilliant and really scary
Silent Hill 3 was hellish scary too, playing as a young girl, feeling vulnerable and the fact that a lot of it takes place in well-lit areas and it's still mind-numbingly scary at times shows how awesome it is

Thief 1. I played it back in its prime when I was a young-un. I could not get past the bonehoard mission for the longest time due to sheer terror.

I finally beat it one day when my balls had grown a size or two and thought I was in the clear.
And then I came across a place known as the The Haunted Cathedral...

Silent Hill 2. Was the last game I found scary. Newer games just arent scary at all.
Though this game looks pretty creepy. www.amnesiagame.com
Amnesia is made by the same devs that made the penumbra series which I mentioned earlier in this thread, play them, play them now!

Splatterhouse 3 scared the hell out of me as a kid. Other than that, nothing. These days, there just isn't anything scary. I don't have this crazy fear of little Japanese girls so many people seem to have, I don't get scared of dogs jumping through the same windows all the time, and even the games that scared me as a kid just don't hold up anymore (mainly because I'm way older now, and I see it all in a different way now).

I'd have to say Dead Space, but that was almost a year ago.

..me and horror games don't mix very well.

Penumbra Overture, never before have I been so afraid of an encounter with a wolf in a game. People weren't lying when they said that game had atmosphere.
This, a thousand times this!

The gleaming eyes in the dark, the blood freezing howls. The fact that you know that you may be dead in a gory way within a few seconds of carelessness. And later on it gets even more scary.
Got that with the Indie Humble Bundle and it scared me half to death when I was waiting behind a box for the first wolf to come around the corner.
Me and my trusty hammer pulled through though!
Did you play on easy? Otherwise there's no way you could have killed it the first time D:

[small]I always play on hard for maximum horror experience[/small]
You fucking bet I did!

Condemned 2: Bloodshot

I don't care if that makes me a pussy, that game was the first and last time I ever pissed myself.

Bioshock. The atmosphere is perfectly realised. Everyones insane. God that was scary. Doom 3 kinda. But that was usually more startling than scary. It made you jump, but Bioshock was actually scary because you feared the enemies, not just their appearance.

Red Dead Redemption. It's not like horror scary but god damn the bears and cougars always got the jump on me.
Agreed, just had my first bear encounter a few minutes ago. Seeing how large they are always angers me...how did I not see that?! Was it hiding behind a tree? Grr....also, Condemned was pretty creepy. Oh, I forgot to mention Silent Hill 2. Especially while thinking through what the scenes and creatures shown are metaphors for...kinda odd.

I was doing the challenge to kill Khan the jaguar and had just put down some bait and hid behind a large rock when I thought how terrifying it would be if Khan suddenly came up behind me. Not 2 seconds after I thought this, I was suddenly viciously attacked from behind and a little message popped up telling me I found Khan. I jumped a foot in the air.

King Kong.

True, it wasn't a horror game as such but when you consider that nearly every enemy is bigger than you are, and that it only takes two hits for you to get killed, and that the only way you stand a chance is to be careful with your ammo supplies and hide in whatever shelter you can... let me tell you, you get anxious.

The original Alone in the Dark, for PC. Not quite as effective now because of painfully dated graphics (coming from someone who does not put heavy emphasis on graphics), but at the time it creeped the hell out of me. One of the concepts that AitD utilized that I have not really seen in a game since is the fact that you literally do not know what can and can't kill you. In Resident Evil, you know what are enemies, you just don't always know when they'll appear. In AitD, you didn't even know what were enemies. Sure, some were obvious, but others were not. Suit of armour, statues, even a painting on the wall came alive and attacked you. Even once you did figure out what were enemies, you didn't always know how or have the capacity to kill them. Some enemies are unkillable, some enemies are like puzzles and require specific items to kill.

And man, I certainly did not want to actually play that one while being literally alone in the dark.
