The last 20 minutes?

Even though it's one of my favorite movies, I have to admit it's a lot of build-up, and I can see how someone who expected a non-stop action flick could've been let down.

I liked how I went from hating Wikus to feeling sorry for him. It showed both sides of the story and made you think and was an alternate to the classic Alien encounter thing. It made me rethink who was good and who was bad.

It was the rare bird of Sci-Fi, smart but not pretentious, with explosive action backed up by a good plot.

It took the best elements of action, sci-fi, and documentary movies and combined them into an epic futuristic social commentary. It was gritty, it was real, and it got the point across while still including the best robot fight in the past decade. And lightning guns. :)

But that's really just my opinion.

Well, it was one of those movies where you either like it or hate it.
I didn't like it when I first saw it. I didn't care for the protagonist. But as AlexP put it, it was because of this anti-protagonist that the movie is as amazing as it is. The only thing to come close to this kinda story was (oddly enough) iron man. I mean, main gets torn down and ripped apart, and only then can he stand up for others. Albeit it happened much earlier in the film than D9. But I guess that was the point of D9, that people don't want to change unless they have to.

The character growth of Wikus. He started off as a man who you wouldn't think twice about punching, and ended as a man of great depth and kept you on edge to see if he would make it.

That, and the space ship

The story was fine and except for the fact that they waited so long to go back home.

Honestly if the ship could drive home right away they could have done it from the very start. It stood there for like 10 years or however long it was.
In regards to my previous post, you're squarely in between those two guys.

Did you miss both parts where Christopher said the fuel took 20 years to gather? Besides, it was made very clear that the surviving Prawns didn't know how to work the ship. Which, as explained in the making-of video, is because a virus killed everyone who did know how to work it. Long story short, it's in your best interest to not make a stupid ass of yourself.
1: Wasn't the fuel only for that transport ship? Which I think was seen being dropped quite early.
2: The making-of video? Really? Do I really need to go watch that to get the entire story told to me?
3: Don't remember hearing that all the aliens who could fly died off due to a virus. Then there is also this issue where that one alien can fly the thing....

I'm not sure who I"m aiming this towards but..

They did say that it was like a hive without a head... In the film. Watch it. And you'll realize that everything falls into place pretty well.

The ship wouldn't even turn on without the black liquid.

Once it could, it was able to use its electronics and summon the mother ship's beam.

I hate how people say, "OMG so many plotholes and so illogical!" when it clearly was pretty well thought out.

Lets see the characters, aliens, and story were believable. And it was a really impressive movie that was done with a low budget I mean just look at this!!!

it made an ultra-violent action movie with a great plot and excellent acting on a budget of 25 million $
exactly this, if you didn't enjoy it your standards were ridiculously high to start with.

I loved it. It was a move from sci-fi trying to appeal to a general audience (see Avatar) to sci-fi just trying to be generally entertaining and thought provoking which is what it can be. Even if it failed it succeeds over those who didn't try.

For me, the first act wasn't that interesting. It treated it like a documentary. After a while, it switched to a normal movie.

Once the second act hits though, it's a fun and smart little action movie.

I liked it because it was action-packed without being insulting. It had a pretty good story, amazing CG that didn't look out of place next to everything else, and thought-provoking social commentary in the same movie as a dude in a mech suit throwing a pig at a guy.

In short, it's the whole package: action and story in perfect unity.

While I admit it had to be one of the slowest progressing science fiction movies in recent times, I liked the way that it got the theme accross. Basicly the fact that what it showed in a movie something that has happened and is still hapening. It had a much deeper meaning than, and I quote, "The lightning gun that made people explode." Did an incredible job relating to the book it was based off of, to.

It wasn't a bad movie. Don't think it was worth ALL the praise it gets, but it does give ya a good look about how we treat other people.
