What was the best Star Trek show and (if you like favorite episodes in your opinion?

Thanks to Netflix been able to revisit Star Trek, which in the 90's and early 2000's was prolifically shown in the UK and pretty much a nerd growing up staple.

(Just my opinion)

Deep Space Nine > TNG > Voyager > The other one

Although Deep Space 9 was overall the best show, TNG "All Good Things" had the best final, it was basically the best Star Trek movie, that was never a movie.

Otherwise Deep Space 9, even from Season 1 with the likes of Duet was better. Even side characters originally designed to be guest stars such as Garak developed into something more interesting than the main characters of TNG.

Voyager had a terrible final and was mostly bad, barring The Doctor who was literally the only decent character with the only decent episodes.

I've seen the first two seasons of TNG, TOS, and ENT, plus sporadic episodes of Voyager and DS9. Thus, within the scope of my limited experience, TNG>TOS>Enterprise.

Edit: To the OP, you may want to take a look at http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.946284-Your-Top-Sci-fi-and-Fantasy-Shows as well (shameless plug). As it shows, I'm not that enamored with Star Trek as many others, and only TNG got into my top ten list.

ive loved them all for different reasons although enterprise is my fave followed by ds9.

ds9 had one of my favourite episodes of any tv show full stop. "the visitor".
as for enterprise. i loved seeing the early days of star fleet. where they were constantly outmatched. discovering new things andf there wasnt a star base 5 minutes away

I can't watch all of Star Trek. I saw most, perhaps all, episodes of TNG when I was a minor and still watched TV. I also watched most of the Voyager episodes on UPN. DS9 and ENT disinterested me back then. I've seen season 1 of TOS and most of season 2. Right now, I'm rewatching TNG season 1 and finishing up season 2 of TOS, but I'm rather sick of them both.

TNG > TOS

I'm not even gonna rank Voyager, since it's been so long since I watched it and I didn't watch it as avidly as TNG.
The first seasons of TNG are bad (ironically) because of Gene Roddenberry, he may have created Star Trek, but his meddling with the show until his illness and eventual death made the first two seasons by far the weakest.

He is also responsible for Star Trek: The Motion picture, which he controlled with an iron fist, which is generally considered the worst movie along with Generations. After that Nicholas Meyer took over, as did Leonard Nimoy and all of the sudden they went from boring to fun.

First two seasons of DS9 are also the weakest barring a few episodes like Duet. As soon as the Dominion arrive at the end of season 2, it changes the show from a TNG knockoff, into something barely resembling Star Trek - acting as a precurser for BattleStar Galactica which Ronald D. Moore would work on several years afterwords.

...huh?

I mean, people will like what they like (or dislike), but I was under the impression that if you asked most people what the worst Star Trek movie is, it would be 5, 10, or if they have a hate-boner for the Kelvinverse, 12. I mean, don't get me wrong, Generations is actually my least favorite Trek film (while TMP comes at #9), but I wasn't under the impression that these were considered to be bottom of the barrel.

On the other hand, Wrath of Khan takes the #2 spot for me, so I agree with you there.

For it goes TNG > TOS > Enterprise > Voyager. I've only seen a few episodes of DS9, so I can't really compare to the others.

I generally rank them TOS>TNG>Voyager>Enterprise>DSN. Its hard for me to chose between TOS and TNG, but TOS is just too important from a historical perspective not to give it the edge. TNG had the best writers and stories. I liked the Idea of Enterprise (if not the execution) and I have a personal dislike for DSN. The first completely non-Roddenberry series... and what do they do. They "boldly go..." nowhere. They just sit in a station in one place. They completely destroy the adventure and discovery that makes Star Trek what it is.

As far as great episodes... I generally maintain that "City on the Edge of Forever" is one of the best episodes of all television history. Personally my favorite Star Trek episode though is "Devil in the Dark." TNG had on average better episodes than TOS, but none that really stand out as that great. Voyager had the Brad Dourif guest episodes which I really liked. Enterprise had some almost pretty good episodes. I never saw an episode of DSN I liked.

DS9>TNG>TOS>Voyager>Enterprise

Deep Space 9 had actual character arcs and an overarching story like normal shows. It's probably why I enjoyed it the most.

This is based strictly on entertainment value. I don't care which show is more important historically.

Actually (and its one of the reasons I don't like DS9) most shows before DS9 do not have overarching storylines. Episodic shows were the normal at that time, because it was the days before the DVR or On Demand era. In the days where shows had to make sure each episode was its own contained story because you couldn't guarantee that an audience would see them in the correct order, or wouldn't miss some of them all together because if you didn't catch it on air... you had to wait for a re-run or not see it at all. Overarching stories were rare in those days because it would lose you viewers.

Now, I'm a little TV old fashioned. I prefer episodic shows. But I will give DS9 credit for that, being on the leading edge of a change in television viewing that would appeal to a millennial generation used to on-demand viewing.

The original Motion Picture at the time was more of an event, contemporary wise it is largely forgotten. Aside from visually stunning FX due to a huge budget, it's like watching paint dry.

Generally for average Joe it's probably Wrath Of Khan or First Contact, or the newer movies (which many Trek fans dislike) as the best ones with Generations seen as the worst.

Star Trek: Nemesis isn't so bad imo, I know most people will disagree, but I thought it was better than the reboot movies.
Shinzon is an interesting villain and although the actual scene where Data dies is miserable (basically trying to mimic Wrath Of Khan) it sort of does fulfill his arc of aspiring towards humanity with a noble trait, sacrifice, rather than some emotion chip.

Outside of the movie itself he does live on and is in the Star Trek (2009) comic before Spock goes back in time.

TNG > VOY > TOS > DS9 > ENT

TNG had so many memorable episodes and two parters. Who Watches the Watchers, Time Squared, Yesterday's Enterprise, Conspiracy, Darmok and of course The Inner Light. On top of that anything with Q is a delight. Whether it's because I watched every series going through my teens or because I used to catch episodes as a kid, TNG has always had a special place in my heart. Voyager gives me the feeling. I love almost everything about it. Except Neelix; it's almost like George Lucas looked at Voyager and said "I'm gonna write me one of those" and then threw up Jar Jar Binks all over the script.

Hard to pick between TOS and TNG. I'd lean towards TNG, but TOS was groundbreaking in a way TNG wasn't.

Followed by Voyager, with DS9 last...not seen much of Enterprise or any of the animated series.

Star Trek has often had a problem that the character tend to be painfully thick, this was worst in DS9 in my opinion.

DS9> TNG> TOS> VOY/TAS>>>>>>>>>.ENT

DS9: Was different then the 'not military' vessel exploring that TNG and TOS did. Also had Dukat, one of the best written 'antagonists' Trek ever had imo. Alos answer the Kirk vs Picard. The answer is Sisko. (or Kirk if you go by Generations)

TNG: Other the first couple of seasons (the pajama years) where they were insufferable, generally really good.

TOS: Its just a classic and with the quintessential crew. Can be a bit dated.

VOY: Other than Picardo as The Doctor, who ad-libbed a lot of lines, Seven of Nine, who should've been a Borg more and slowly become human but this is Voyager so reset everything every episode. Technobabble at its worst and bullshit solutions to problem. Also the Maquis crew was never if rarely an issue, being stranded and low on supplies was rarely a problem and too many 'Will they get home today?' and the answer being obviously not. They have an entire series to get through.

TAS: Cheaply made but entertainingly stupid. Also most is non canon as far as I am aware.

ENT:..........*shudder*

Yeah, you'd be hard pressed to argue against DS9/TNG taking the top spot. DS9 was the only one with a real ongoing story, which is perfect for modern binge watching viewers (though Sisko being the chosen one felt very un-trek to me) and TNG had the best individual episodes.

I think VOY is a little underrated. It's not as good as TNG/DS9, but there's plenty of Borg episodes and The Doctor is one of my all time favorite characters.

TOS is TOS

I wanna give ENT another shot.

TNG takes top spot for me since i feel it has the most charismatic captain and can remember a host of interesting episodes of the top of my head.
But then TOS has Spock and McCoy...So maybe i do prefer the supporting crew of TOS. And i actually like the occasional cheese and don't mind antiquated special effects, i got a good enough imagination to work through the rough spots ;)

Yeh think i'll go TNG>TOS>Voyager>DS9.
Despite that order i enjoy all of them though, and only reason i didn't put Enterprise in is cos i haven't watched many episodes of it, something i should probably try to remedy at some point.

DS9 takes bottom spot because i really really REALLY hated the prophets and their role of deus ex machina saving the protagonists from what should have been a dominion victory.
Sisko was an allright captain but i'd have liked him a lot more if he wasn't "the prophet".
Dukat should have won!!! He had bested the feds fair and square and his mental breakdown over victory being taken from him for the most bs of reasons by space gods was very damned justified, i think i'd have reacted the same exact way even without my daughter dieing in my arms. At least the Qs have the decency to mostly keep out of mortal affairs.
And i found the bajorans and kira to be kinda insufferable.

So yeh too many black marks against Ds9 for me.

DS 9 for me. It had the most established setting, and actually had a logical reason for why their were returning characters, and main characters leaving due to IRL stuff. They left the station, or came back to the station. It made a lot more sense than just happening to bump into the exact same person on a planet literally on the other side of the galaxy.

But I liked the established setting, the ability to have a continuous narrative with evolving characters. Like how Kira Narise, went from an angry ex-liberation fighter, to someone who learned about her own anger, after talking to a particular Cardassian in a cell. If you've seen the show, you know the episode I'm talking about.

How Odo evolved and learned to be around people, and have friends and lovers. How Rom went from comic relief, to a well developed character in his own right, etc etc.

It had it's flaws, but it was the one I enjoyed the most.

I can't speak to Voyager, as I stopped watching that piece of shit after about 5 episodes, and Enterprise only held me for about the same. They were just poorly written and dull.

The Original Series for me! It's cheesy as hell, kept me entertained the whole way through, and it didn't matter where in the series I started watching, it was easy enough to follow along and enjoy. I liked the characters and I liked the world.

Voyager next on the list for me. Because I loved the captain and I loved the stories and characters.

TNG = VOY > TOS > DS9 and never watched ENT.

TNG was where I started. I don?t know how it happened; I watched an episode with my mom one day, next thing I knew, years had passed and I?d seen them all, multiple times. Lots of great memories, too many to list.

And I guess I?m in the minority, but I loved VOY, just as much as TNG. I just loved the idea of a crew being stranded 75 years away and trying to get home. Being in the Delta Quadrant allowed the writers free reign away from the tried-and-true Star Trek lore and do NEW things. Don?t get me wrong, I love me some Klingons, Romulans and the lot, but the best episodes of TOS and TNG were the ones that introduced someone/thing new. All the things the Voyager crew had to do to scrape by made for some incredible episodes; I thought Janeway was an amazing captain. And I won?t lie, that final episode, when Voyager finally burst through the wormhole(?) back into the Alpha Quadrant and saw Earth, I kinda teared up; it had been an amazing ride; I hated to see it end?

TOS was meh; kinda cheesy and dated to me, but it is the foundation of my favorite shows ever, so I tip my hat to it.

DS9 I didn?t like. I couldn?t get into it at all; it was pretty much the embodiment of everything I disliked about my least favorite episodes of TNG and VOY; it felt like it was ALL politics. Star Trek is about space exploration, so a Start Trek show about a space STATION was just off-putting.

And when ENT was announced and I saw Scott Bakula was the lead, I knew it wouldn?t be worth my while, so I never bothered.
