Has to be this

best picture I could find of it

Man I loved that thing, could fit 2 figures in it, had working siren and lights and even a handle that came out the undercarrage to hold onto as you "flew" it around, wish I hadn't sold it a long time ago at a boot sale now, would make a good collectible to have around

Buzz.Freakin.Lightyear.

Toy Story was one of my favorite movies as a kid. And my favorite character was Buzz, mostly cause I wanted to be an astronaut when I was younger. But the toy was just cool, with the wings and the little laser thing and the buttons you could push to make him talk. Best toy ever.

I almost always give out unsolicited advice to new parents that goes something like:

"Whatever you do, if you can manage it, try not to throw out your kid's toys."

I mean from the time when they have an actual favorite of course. I keep telling people they're going to save their child thousands of dollars by not forcing them to track down their sentimental favorites on eBay decades later.

The other awesome toys I had were Starcom. These things were fantastic. All the ships and tanks had moving parts, wings that would slowly unfold, or gun batteries that would snap up into position.
I looked up Starcom and holy crap those things are cool.

That being said, I still have my near 75% die cast metal Orguss Orgroid [http://dennis-toys.blogspot.com/2008/07/140-orguss-orgroid.html] as well as this huge Henshin Robo (Robotech) motorcycle that transforms into armor over the figure. Both are from the 80's. I also still have my G1 Transformers Sludge and Ramjet, box, packaging and all. Oh right, and Astrotrain. Poor Astrotrain. Always the bridesmaid....

Well, looking back now, my 'best' toys were the 8 foot tall inflatable Godzilla and the 4-foot tall smurfs my parents kept in our playroom.

That's right. I literally napped on Papa Smurf while Godzilla watched over me.

... My parents were awesome.

Transformers, lots and lots of Transformers (well ok I had like ten or more) althought these two are my favourites-
In fact I still kept hold of those two til this very day (but they're not in mint condition).

Yup that Lego franchise were my favourite and likewise I kept hold all of them too (I keep getting the stone and air Bionicle or at least one of them like Pohatu and Lewa up until the Ignika which by then weren't as cool anymore althought I did bought two of the Glatorians).

I was my own worst enemy in this regard.

My parents would regularly encourage us to "clean out the toy closet" which meant if there were any toys we weren't playing with anymore, put them in a box, and they'd get donated to local pre-schools or charities or whatnot. Starting when I was about 15-16, I didn't have any need for Transformers or He-Man, and in my mind they were just taking up space in the closet that I didn't need anymore. So my collection slowly dwindled over the years.

I probably wouldn't WANT my original G1 Optimus Prime anymore. I lost the gun and his hands eons ago, and he was heavily played with. However, I think I'll always regret giving away Predaking - who was in relatively good condition, since I'd gotten him when I was older. I was also totally surprised that Christmas when I received all the different pieces to him from my various relatives. Up until that point, I didn't think my family understood me very well. I could ask for "a transformer" but in years prior if I ever asked for a SPECIFIC Transformer, I would always get something else.

I'd also kill to have my original Shockwave back. This guy was the coolest ray-gun toy EVER, even if he WASN'T a Transformer. The arm on mine was broken, but 30 year old me could have fixed that. Wish I still had him.

You jelly, bro?

Anyway, the coolest toy I had as a kid (And still own) is the Knight Morpher Annihilator. Custom, cost me $90.

Arrrgh I used to have that Shockwave as well! Made a cool noise when you pulled the trigger. I don't know what happened to him. Another horrible story from me is that I used to have a Diaclone Megatron. He came with blue, plastic bullets that he could really fire. Sadly, he didn't survive being transported in a plastic bag on my bike and getting caught between the spokes :(

Toys were so much more cooler back then, as well as so realistic to the point of being irresponsibly dangerous.

What is that Prime called again? I actually have Anniversary Prime (no trailer). Damn, my TF collector friend in NJ would be facepalming right now if he saw me not remembering the name of the BEST PRIME EVER.

Oh HELL YEAH! K'nex is awesome! Recently went into the attic and found a whole heaping box of it! I made a ferris wheel (had the things to make them work as well)
Well, now I'm tempted to break out my own crate and see what I can come up with. I'm just as impressed you had all the necessary parts!
I get the feeling that some of my own roller coaster pieces disappeared over the years. Things that remain untouched for long periods of time have a habit of doing that.

Well, as for my K'nex collection, the parts to make the coaster (and other things) are broken and worn out, but at least we still have it.
You're right, that is the important thing. And besides, is there really anything duct tape can't fix?
The correct answer is no.
...
Yes, even the electric bits.
