I almost always give out unsolicited advice to new parents that goes something like:
"Whatever you do, if you can manage it, try not to throw out your kid's toys."
I mean from the time when they have an actual favorite of course. I keep telling people they're going to save their child thousands of dollars by not forcing them to track down their sentimental favorites on eBay decades later.
I was my own worst enemy in this regard.
My parents would regularly encourage us to "clean out the toy closet" which meant if there were any toys we weren't playing with anymore, put them in a box, and they'd get donated to local pre-schools or charities or whatnot. Starting when I was about 15-16, I didn't have any need for Transformers or He-Man, and in my mind they were just taking up space in the closet that I didn't need anymore. So my collection slowly dwindled over the years.
I probably wouldn't WANT my original G1 Optimus Prime anymore. I lost the gun and his hands eons ago, and he was heavily played with. However, I think I'll always regret giving away Predaking - who was in relatively good condition, since I'd gotten him when I was older. I was also totally surprised that Christmas when I received all the different pieces to him from my various relatives. Up until that point, I didn't think my family understood me very well. I could ask for "a transformer" but in years prior if I ever asked for a SPECIFIC Transformer, I would always get something else.

I'd also kill to have my original Shockwave back. This guy was the coolest ray-gun toy EVER, even if he WASN'T a Transformer. The arm on mine was broken, but 30 year old me could have fixed that. Wish I still had him.
