Oblivion, when I watched a friend trash a shop, throwing things all over the place, punch the shopkeeper, then run out and get lost in the forest before the guards could catch him. The level of detail and freedom quite impressed me.

Chrono Trigger. Hot diggity damn! Best SNES RPG ever!

Probably my favorite (J)RPG of all time, and the one game that actually got me interested in the genre (when up to that point I didn't give a damn about RPGs). Sadly, most of my experiences with the genre have been below that high point (FF7 included. Yes, I did play through the whole thing.).

Quake II on the PC was a close second. That game was absolute badassery from start to finish. Doom may be the father of the 3D FPS, but the formula was perfected with Quake II, and unless I'm mistaken the very first CTF and Domination multiplayer games started out as Quake II mods.

Sonic the hedgehog because of the music, speed and various level designs. now I look at the new sonic games and dye a little inside. ( no, I will never believe that there will be another great sonic game past sonic adventure 2)

I was pretty amazed the first time I say Lemmings. I was 4, but it was still amazing.

Morrowind. I grew up on the square rpg's for the SNES, but it was my first foray into the open-world, do anything you want, exploration RPG. I remember the first time I walked into Balmora and thought the guards patrolling the town in bonemold armor were the most badass things ever, then many hours later being able to return and wipe out the entire town. I probably would have enjoyed it even more if I had been able to play it on the PC...

I'd second this, but I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't already love Chrono Trigger. I can't say it blew me away because I honestly can't remember my first playthrough, it just seems like the game has always been there.

Oblivion.

Complete freedom from the chains of linearity. Now a days i mostly play open-ended or sandbox games.

Hmm probably grand theft auto 3. I was with a group of friends at one of their houses and their parents had bought them it on the release day and it was simply amazing with the level of open-worldness.

As a small child, the Original PS1 series of Spyro the Dragon. They where amazing and I can still play with awe today. As I got more older, GTA San Andreas was my favourite game ever, the amount of freedom and things to do in that game, the amount of fun just blew me away.
