This is tough cos as a kid I loved games but just for their simple enjoyment. I was never looking to be blown away. But I was amazed by Ape Escape's use of the analogue sticks and by Pokemon Blue, being the first RPG I ever played
I think when I respected games as an art form is when I started being blown away so I would say MGS2, it's stealth mechanics, cinematics and story all blew my 12-year-old mind clean out of my skull

Team Fortress 2

It might have been Deus Ex, Half Life or FF VII, but those were some of the first games I ever played, so I though that was the video game standards. It all went downhill when I went to the game store looking for new games. Team Fortress 2 was the only thing after that I was truly amazed by.

Well personally I think storyline in games can go off and die. I have never really had a fondness for storyline in games because usually it's so god awful, voice acting is tragic (beyond just awful), and really the only reason I play a game is for the gameplay and artistic style and flair.

That being said ... one game that truly blew me away and challenged my idea that 'story' in a game is universally shite (before I went to play something else and reaffirm my convictions) is Planescape: Torment.

The *ONLY* game where the story and the setting and the atmosphere came together so wonderfully and completely that I wept for joy .... before I went on to play something else <.< and those tears of joy turned into bitter wails of contempt and hatred.

And then I eventually just don't pay attention to storyline anymore and just focus on atmosphere, setting, style and (most importantly) general gameplay n.n

That being said, if another game comes by the knock Torment off it's pedastal as a pinnacle of Combining all 4 things that make a game great (Gameplay, Atmosphere, Setting, Style) and actually has a GOOD story I'll be inclined to buy 10 copies of the game and give them to friends if only to support that the artistic team get the righteous credit they deserve. But so far the criterion hasn't been met yet so I'll just brood until it happens and write 'Nameless One' fanfiction till I grow old and hoary <.<

Fallout II without question.

But my actual reason behind liking that game is that it was something so very different when I first played it. Barely coming off games like Super Mario and a lot of the arcade game side scrollers, Fallout II was one of the first things I really remember playing on my computer. No it wasn't the first game I played for computer but for some reason I just remember it clearly. That and having my older neighbor buy me a copy and playing it seemingly forever.

The mood, the freedom, the choices, the music, even the gore, all were something so extremely different that they really stuck.

Dynasty Warriors 2, my mum owned a video rental shop when I was a kid, and got all of these really unknown, dirt cheap PS2 games, I picked up DW2 just for giggles, I didn't really want it, and didn't expect to like it, I put in my PS2 and was dumbstruck, I was addicted to it for months, I'm not too sure what it was that I loved so much, I'm guessing it was the big open battle fields fighting off literally hundreds of enemies, it was just addictive.

Ratchet and Clank 2. Yes I am rather young. The game was just so imaginative, funny, exciting, huge and generally fun. To this day it's my 4th favourite game and has a very special place in my heart as the first game I felt compelled to finish.

The very first? Probably the Game boy version of a very obscure puzzle game called "Runes of Virtue" It was set in the ultima universe, and you had to rescue eight mayors from eight dungeons that a antagonist called "Black Knight" hid them in. Why this game impressed me I have no idea, but bear in mind I was around 6 or 7 years old at the time.

I was gonna say Doom, but really it was Little Big Adventure
It was the first time I'd seen a really immersive story, fully voiced, multiple varied and instantly recognisable locations.
Doom was awesome, but it was a shooter first and foremost, any story just seemed like something they tacked on after making a game with the basic ideas of a) military stuff & b) demons

Bob the zombie said:
Sonic the hedgehog because of the music, speed and various level designs. now I look at the new sonic games and dye a little inside. ( no, I will never believe that there will be another great sonic game past sonic adventure 2)
Yea, I second that. It was sooo polished at the time with the fast movement, clean animation and well designed sound.

brutal legend. most games before that were like "BOOM yaay"

but because i like heavy metal, that game was made for me. brutal legend was like "I AM MADE OF METAAAAL!!! MY CIRCUITS GLEEEEAM!! I AM PERPETUAL, I KEEP THE COUNTRY CLEEEEAN!!!"

there were parts of that game that really got me, like my first stage battle where i fought off wave after wave of heretics hair bangers while, fighting along side my metal army playing "One Shot at Glory" by judas priest. "ONE SHOT AT GLOOOORY, IN THE CROSSFIRE OOOOVERHEAD! ONE SHOT AT GLOOORY, WORDS HAVE ALL BEEN SAAAAID!!!"

and then the part that really got me to cry and put on a happy grin like i just found my long lost son was the part where the emo's found my hiding spot and as all hope seemed lost "BAAM" rob halford from judas priest rode in out of nowhere on their sick ass motorcycles playing leather rebel. it was epically badass.

the single player campaign in MW2 was pretty good to, but even then brutal legend is still my favorite game.

Probably Fable, I had never played an RPG before and just fell in love with the whole atmosphere of the game.

The first Command & Conquer. The music then was a breath of fresh clean air compaired to the usual MIDI bleeps and synth drums.
That and running men down with the MCV was alot of fun then.

Elite. The first game I saw with true freedom. It gave you a ship and a universe to explore. What more could a man want?
