Sonic the hedgehog because of the music, speed and various level designs. now I look at the new sonic games and dye a little inside. ( no, I will never believe that there will be another great sonic game past sonic adventure 2)
This.
I believe Sonic the hedgehog 2 was the first game I ever played, and I have been hooked on console gaming ever since that day (I can even remember the day, and my memory is terrible).

Sonic has been completely killed for me now though, with all the stupid story b/s and children's characters I really don't care about. The original games anybody of any age can play, even now and they are fun. But I genuinely feel embarrassed playing any of the newer Sonic games due to how childish they have become.

Or more recently Braid, for just being so clever and original, and making side scrolling cool again.

Two for me (and one is quite fitting given the recent post about the 3D remake of it in the news section):

1.) Zelda 2
Don't get me wrong, I did love the first Zelda game and spent ages with it, but even back then there was something disappointing about the graphics and shallow gameplay (not shallow game, just shallow combat, 4 direction movement, etc.). I was an avid fantasy reader from a young age and while Zelda 1 sort of scratched that itch, it fell short in a lot of ways. Then Zelda 2 came out. I wasn't this chubby little one note kid anymore, I was actually totally in control of this character fighting vicious creatures, delving into devious mazes, etc. It was, to use a much overused word, Epic.

2.) Castlevania 2
Looking back, I'm really not sure how I got through it given the beyond horrid translation (I'm guessing it was thanks to Nintendo Power), but I lived this game for months. I even bought the crap book based on it I loved it so much. The mix of RPG and action game, the mind blowing music, the day/night system, the (too-)cryptic puzzles, the gothic and spooky atmosphere. It totally blew my young mind.. even if the end boss was a total wimp (by any games standard, never mind by Castlevania standards).

the first Mass Effect. At the end, gosh... I was in a state of total fulfillment during the end credits.

So I played it 6 times :-/

Oblivion. I and a friend had been drooling over screenshots for months. I think we both went and bought 360s not long after they launched.

Probably Halo. I had never played a game that told a great story, so when confronted with the epicness of Halo's sci-fi plot, it really got to me.

Next was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which had an even better story. A truly amazing game on all counts.

Finally, Final Fantasy VII. Few games since have had the same effect on me.

It would have to be the original Mass Effect. Every other game I had played before had been exactly what I expected them to be. Not that they were bad games: Dead Space, Splinter Cell, Fallout, etc. I expected to be an okay game. I was and still am a huge Star Wars fan and I thought that there was no way it could ever touch it. Boy was I wrong. I couldn't believe how incredible it was and I can't get enough of Mass Effect to this day.

Oddly enough, my earliest memory of playing a game and thinking "Wow, this game is amazing" is Super Mario RPG. It wasn't like the graphics are phenomenal or anything was particularly eye-popping, but it was the first game I remember playing and after 20 minutes realizing "My God, this, this is awesome!"

The first "eye-popping" kind of blown away was probably Final Fantasy VII, followed closely by Metal Gear Solid. F'ing classic games, there really was nothing like 'em at the time.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3. That game was so incredible to me the first time I saw it (and it still is).

Mass Effect on the 360
The first game I played after almost a year's break
Also this. It wasn't my first game on the 360, but it was the first one I played that really blew my mind with the graphics/epic storytelling.

Probably still Halo: Combat Evolved.
When I was a lad, having little experiance with first person shooters, suddenly playing a game where I was running down a hallway on fire while aliens fired at me. Hell yes I felt pretty excited and it only got more so in the second level when the Chief exits the escape pod and suddenly I'm staring at a big open(ish) world all around me.

Resident Evil 4. This was at a time when I was used to games like Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Super Monkey Ball. Nothing against those types of games, but Resident Evil 4 was what really showed me that gaming could be much more than talking to animal friends. I honestly had my mind blown by the pure differences this game brought. I mean, you start out in a village and by the end of the game you've gone through every single video game location possible save for outer space. If you don't count the story, Resident Evil 4 was phenomenal from start to finish and I absolutely fell in love with that game. Mind you, I grew up on video gaming, but before then I had played the educational point and click adventure game with the occasional "other" game like Super Mario Brothers. I also never had a console unless you count IntelliVision and games like Galaga. I was used to gaming as a hobby, but Resident Evil 4 turned it from a hobby to a lifestyle.

Most recently, however, Heavy Rain blew me away as well. Never before has a game struck a nerve quite like Heavy Rain. I mean, sometimes I would feel regret after killing innocent civilians in other games like Fallout 3 and even in Saints Row 2 but Heavy Rain nearly pushed me to tears.

Twilight Princess (of course Ocarina of Time before that) and...this one may be strange...but The Force Unleashed. It was the Star Wars game I always wanted as a kid

Oblivion. I'd never seen such an amazingly detailed free-roaming environment.
Same, I couldn't believe how large the game world was and how much detail was packed into every little corner. Now people can't shut up about how it was too small, then we end up with game worlds like Just Cause 2's that go on forever.

I thought the plot twist was EPIC! Completely mind-blowingly AWESOME! After the plot twist I just had to call my friend(who had already beaten the game and refused to tell me what happened until I had beaten it) and make random guffaws of the awesomeness of the game.
