What was the last ending of a game that was genuinely satisfying?

It probably wasn't the last one, but Bastion comes to mind.

Funnily enough, it actually did the last minute choose-your-ending thing, but it did it well.

EDIT: Ohh, ohh, and Journey of course. How the hell did I forget that?
It did the choose-your-ending thing, but I feel it can be forgiven because, in the first set of choices, one of the options leads to one of the greatest moments in gaming.

(also choice wasn't really a factor in the game before that)

Xenoblades ending was mindfuck but still a pertty good one.
Skyward Sword also had a nice ending
Agreed on Skyward Sword. I like the implication they make about why Ganon keeps coming back. (EDIT: Without even mentioning his name. It was subtle, I liked it)

Closure wise, I would say Dragon Age. That game was awesome at wraping everything up. Too bad it was all text though.

Portal 2. For "that one moment", so glorious, so perfect. And the ending song is beautiful, part sad, part happy, all GLaDOS.

I was happy with Skyrim's ending because of how the dovahkiin becomes Talos.
.....No he doesn't.

Anyway, I recently finished Mass Effect 2 again and that has an extremely satisfying ending. I did enjoy the ending to the main quest of Skyrim. It was so much better than Oblivion's. Arkham City's ending was decent although maybe a little abrupt. Portal 2 had a great ending.
Secret Armory of General Knoxx has an extremely satisfying ending too.

And maybe I will catch some flack for this but I did genuinely enjoy the campaign, and ending of MW3. It was worth the rent for the single player. I hated the multiplayer though.

Yes he does.

The Dovahkiin, General Tullius, and Ulfric Stormcloack recreate the same events that not only created the mortal realm of Mundus but also caused Tiber Spetim, Ysmir Wulfharth and Zurin Arctus to merge and ascend into the being that is Talos, by remaking the events that led to the founding of the 3rd empire.

The General, The Rebel, The Observer
Akatosh, Lorkhan, Magnus
Tiber Septim, Ysmir Wulfharth, Zurin Actus
Tullius, Ulfric, Dovahkiin

The mythic act has been repeated time and time again and it always heralds the dawning of a new god.

Just as Talos became Lorkhan after Lorkhan failed, so shall Ulfirc, Tullius, and The Dovahkiin merge in death to take the place of the failing Talos, weary from holding back the fall of the world.

The first steps to a new apotheosis have begun and cannot be stopped.

Dead Space 2's was good, definately memorable.
Skyrim is somewhat of a special case. The ending in general was great. The bossfight was pathetic.

My almost crippling ADHD prevents anything from staying in my noggin for too long though. So maybe a more recent title has actually hit the spot and I just can't remember.

Oh.... that makes sense. Thank you sir. You have just enlightened me on why the ending is now even better than I originally though. I didn't realize Talos was created out of 3 separate beings. I thought that it was just Tiber Septim who ascended.

Need to read up on more lore I guess.

The whole Tiber,Ysmir,Zurin thing is explained in these books
http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Five_Songs_of_King_Wulfharth
http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Arcturian_Heresy

And later series lore writer Michael Kirkbride confirmed they are all avatars of Lorkhan, which is how thier merging made them a new Lorkhan
http://www.imperial-library.info/content/forum-archives-michael-kirkbride
Lorkhan and his avatars:

1. Wulfharth L
2. Hjalti O
3. Ysmir R
4. Talos K
5. Arctus H
6. Septim A
N

The thing about Lorkhan, Akatosh, and Magnus would require a super long explanation, as would how repeating mythic acts causes people to merge, so I'm not really gonna post it here, but it works on the same principal as how the Champion of Cyrodil from Oblivion became the Sheogorath in Skyrim, by making the staff in the shivering isles expansion and sitting on the throne of madness he recreated the same acts the old Sheo did and thus turned into him.

Borderlands!

Now before anyone goes apesh*t on me, I mean specifically the DLC packs of General Knoxx and Claptrap Revolution. Both of those were extremely satisfying, brought closure to their respective packs and left the door open for more story.

Mmm, I'm going to have to agree with this one here. Honestly felt sad during the good ending.
Sad during the good ending?

Killing Zeke almost made me cry, probably my favourite supporting character from a video game

OT: Castlevania: Lords of shadow, I nearly dropped milkshake.

Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past, God of War(1), Shadow of the Colossus, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Metal Gear Solid 4.

I am using these older games to because I did just recently play them. But if you are speaking chronologically, the last one of those games I played for the first time is Metal Gear Solid 4.

Agreed, although I prefered the 'evil' ending because it made more sense to me.
Also, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2 and Yakuza 4 were quite satisfying to me.

There have been a few games already in the thread that I hadn't thought about when I first read the post (eg Portal series), but the game that immediately jumped into my mind was Syberia. I haven't finished the second game yet, so I can't comment on the series ending, but the ending to Syberia 1 is one of the most poignant I've ever seen. It concludes the main plot line, depicts a turning point in the motivations and life of the player character and leaves enough room open for future games (yet could be a good finishing point if it was a stand alone game) and most importantly was fitting and consistent with the themes of the rest of the game.

Most games that I have finished actually have endings that are good, or at least good enough to wrap them up.

There's a few bad exceptions, Dead Space 2, Borderlands, FO3 was unconventional but not bad in my opinion.

I can't comment on DA2 and ME3. DA2 was so bad overall that I couldn't play the game to the end, and I skipped on ME3 for several reasons. But before those most BW games had decent endings. DA:O ends very well, both ME1 and ME2 have satisfying endings, nothing extraordinary but good enough.

So I don't really see a trend at all.

Prototype. It left it open.. but managed to close it at the same time. It's odd, but I found it satisfying.

I agree with this completely. It was the in-betweener and didn't have a real ending, but that final scene with the reapers still gives me chills.

For me it was probably Arkham City. That ending had real impact, and was just overall superb.
