Last (released) game that I was pumped for was Dragon Age: Inquisition. I love BioWare games, and I am a huge fan of Dragon Age. Whilst the game was fun to begin with, revisiting it really does show a lot of flaws in it's design that really hindered the experience. Would I play it again? Sure. Did it live up to my hype? Not one bit.

Now I seem to be pumped for Arkham Knight. I love me a Batman game, and Arkham Knight sure does seem like a blast. Damn pretty too. I am riding the hype train again for this game, but lets just hope that the destination is anywhere near as nice as the brochure.

I think the last time I was obscenely pumped for a game was for Call of Duty: Black Ops II in 2012, partly for everything going to shit around it whilst it looked promising itself.

Black Ops and MW3 had showed signs of the gameplay becoming stale, and Black Ops II looked like it was going to experiment a bit.
MW3 was an unmitigated disaster, a so-bad-it's-good game in many regards.
Most importantly were the failures of Gears of War 3 and Halo 4:
Gears 3 was losing its luster because of balance changes they made around autumn 2012.
Halo 4 came out the week before Black Ops II, and I literally hate no other game more than I do Halo 4.

Black Ops II looking like it would be good enough, but coupled with it being a rare sight of hope and potential definitely helped me to slobber at the thought of getting it inside my life Xbox. Thank fucking Christ that it actually surpassed my expectations and I love it so damn much.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica maybe?
Yeah, it's been a while.
I've been a cynical bastard for over a decade now.

I'm currently pretty hype for MGSV:TPP and The Witch and the Hundred Knight II. But the last game I was overwhelmingly hyped for?

Drakengard 3. It did not disappoint. It had been so long since I could not put a game down. I loved it so much with nobody else understanding why.

Honestly?

Titanfall.

And no, I was not disappointed. I love the hell out of the game and still play occasionally. I've even taken part in the pro-scene for the game. Though, I was introduced to the scene completely by accident.[footnote]Basically, a friend tossed me a game invite one day, and said, "Come play". However, what he didn't tell me was that I wasn't joining a pub or pug match, but rather that I was filling a slot for his tourney team. I did well enough (even though I knew nothing of my teams tactics or strats) that I wound up playing the dedicated Pilot hunter for several teams over the following months.[/footnote]

I'm equally excited for the sequel. I'm hoping they expand on the lore and story-verse with the next one. I have no delusions that a solo campaign is guaranteed, but I'm really hopeful that there'll be one.

'Course, I'm also hoping it's not an Origin exclusive. That is the primary culprit for the smaller PC player-base for the game.

That said, if we're including games that have yet to release, well...

It's rare to see devs do audio design well in horror games nowadays. It's always a cavalcade of 'creepy' sounds and growls. You almost never see anyone do proper soundscape building or, as in the case of this game, proper use of silence.

It's really refreshing to see a dev who appreciates what constitutes true atmospheric horror. Amazing that the dev team is comprised of only 3 people.

Current: Batman Arkham Knight, like everyone else on the planet.

Previous: Bloodborne

Before that: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Before that:...um...BioShock Infinite maybe? I can't remember.

Obscenely?
well, that would have to be master of orion 3.

god, that didn't go well.

I still get excited about games, sure, but now It's tempered by that little suspicion that it may turn out wrong.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3. I'd check my phone at least three times a night at work, hoping to see a new character be announced or game mode. I was so impatient on waiting until August, I spent like 70-80 bucks to get the Japanese version three days after release. My hype was not misplaced and I have enjoyed the game enough to warrant the price.

Really good co-op games aren't too common nowadays, so it's very rare I REALLY get pumped for something.
The last thing I was REALLY pumped for was when I heard Monster Hunter 4 being released, followed by extreme disappointment on discovery that it'd only be for handhelds.
If I hear a console port coming, i'll make that game MINE.

The closest thing to that was hearing that a new Deus Ex game is coming. I'm a big fan of Human Revolution and so i'd love to dive right into its sequel.

I am an incredibly unpassionate person, so nothing really. As a result, I can only get moderately excited about things. As a result, when I do get excited about stuff, it's not that big of a deal. The most recent was Bloodborne, before that was Xenoblade CHronicles 3D, then Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, then Pokemon: Omega Sapphire, and so on.

Diablo 3.

I 'was' getting REALLY psyched for Dragon Age: Inquisition but that began to fade to potential concern as they released more information on the game. I didn't want DA going open world out of fear that it would dilute the story and importance of your actions. These days I regret having even bought the game given how little satisfying game play it's offered me.

Diablo 3 on the other hand lived up to the hype. I realize that's all pretty backwards to the norm but I loved the single player experience of D2 and D3 simply launched as a superior game play expanded version of D2. I was in gaming heaven and the game only improved with each subsequent patch ultimately eating away around 3000 hours of my life before getting burnt out.

Note: before Diablo 3 it was Dragon Age 2. Which paid off in spades for me as well. Backwards to the internet fandom response yet again I adored DA2 as much as the critics. I wish more RPG's would follow in DA:2's example of developing characters over years and giving your decisions lasting consequences and weight. DA2 only really scratched the surface on this potential.

Nothing since Skyrim. And, God, that was back in 2011.

Still, my 2600+ hours played, according to Steam, suggest it's lasted me well. Indeed I still play sometimes.

And I may add that the next one will probably be when they announce the Elder Scrolls 6.

I hear that. I couldn't wait for Skyrim when it was announced...I'd say that this pretty much sums up my feelings upon hearing the new:

And that was back when I was wanting it for my 360! A couple years later I upgraded my PC a bit and got it on Steam...I...I just didn't know! The glory and splendor of Modded Skyrim! Truly it remains the most beautiful game I've ever played, and one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had!

Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect is my favourite game series, and one of my favourite series across all entertainment. And the fact that this was a trilogy, so it was a conclusion for the story and characters of the first 2 games made it even more exciting than just a disconnected sequel. I'm not going to go in depth on the ending because I think we've talked about that enough. I'll just say that I loved the first 26 hours and was disappointed by the last 15 minutes.

I think it did make me realise that getting THAT hyped up about a game is not healthy. It was almost impossible for Bioware to live up to my level of hype, the stories I'd constructed in my head, the gameplay features that I would have liked to see, consequences of decisions from past games, etc. Its actually quite amazing that I was able to enjoy it as much as I did.

These days, I don't allow myself to get that hyped up about any game. Witcher 3 is a perfect example because its a similar situation. I really enjoyed the first 2, I've actually recently replayed them - 1 is showing its age now but 2 is still an amazing game. And (I'm guessing) 3 will directly follow on from the cliffhangers and the end of 2. I want to see how the story ends. I'm definately going to play it. But I'm not like OMG OMG OMG SUPER HYPED.

I'm much more cynical about the games industry now. I've played enough disappointments, watched enough videos of broken messes - AAA and indie - that my default thought now is "what is wrong with this game?". I don't watch trailers, I don't read previews or interviews, I don't take part in the pre release marketing hype. I wait until a game is released, read the reviews, forum comments, decide if the game sounds good, wait for major bugs to get patched, and then maybe 1-2 months later, I'll play the game.
