That wolverine guy you find in one of the cellars in Resident Evil 4. My biggest problem, was being chased but unable to see him, while hearing him howling meaning that instant death was right on your trail. In general I don't like being chased, just weirds me out for some reason, even when it's a game or something.

One bit in Bioshock... there's water on the floor, it's a small room and on the wall I can see the hulking shadow of a splicer. I reach for my trusty shotgun and move stealthily forward.

And the lights go out.

Through the impenetrable darkness I can hear nor see anything then I hear the water swishing to my left, just within an arms reach. I loose off my gun several times but hit nothing, I hear a slight laughing behind.

The lights come on.

I turn around, nothing. I edge round the corner and see a dessicated corpse of a woman on an undertaker's slab, her stomach ripped out and blood sattered on the floor. I turned around.

And the lights went out.

And then they come on again.

And the nobhead was right in front of me! Scared me absolutely shitless, I must have jumped a mile.

I turn to my friend and say, "it's okay, the AI can't open doors." Next thing, there's the creak of a door, an evil laugh, and the rev of a chainsaw. My friend and I shat ourselves.

That game made me wet my pants but not at the atmosphere. At the bit where the guy jumps out at you when your taking pics of him. Scared me three quarters of the way to death.

When I first saw Ghadius, I literally screamed. I was about 5, and I still think he's the most badass antagonist ever. It wasn't even scary either, it's just, his entire persona...my god. Ghadius, you're awesome.

Going back awhile now, but probably playing the original Unreal, first time through.
There's a part where you have to turn off the power to a shield generator and the lights slowly all go out. As you're creeping along in the dark throwing the ocassional flare you just know that something bad is gonna go down but when the Skaarj warrior jumps out at you....... well, definitely got the heart pumping.
