Simply put, for me, It has to be the Cortana Level from Halo 3. Given how close-quarters the level was, and the fact that the Flood could constantly heal, Even on easy, the level was still frustrating and badly designed. So, what was the worst level you ever played? Doesn't matter if it was broken or made to challenging.

It's a toss up between the Fade and Deep Roads sections in Dragon Age: Origins: both INCREDIBLY boring, both drag on WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too long and both fill me with a sense of weary dread whenever I come back to the game; "Oh God-Emperor, not these bits again."

Oh, and "Burn em Out" on Veteran difficulty from Call of Duty: World at War. Jesus bloody Christ is that mission hard!

The Sacred Grounds in Cave Story were definitely crafted to be challenging. I'm not all that skilled when it comes to rote platformers anyway, so it was an obstacle to complete on normal difficulty. Still, the devotion to the end-game mechanics made playing through "hell" worth it.

well 2 levels come to mind right now, the stealth sections in Metro 2033, which were simply dreadful, the stealth mechanics were too simplistic and the level design too linear to have any sort of effective stealth section

and a dark level in crash bandicoot 3, the level was all dark and you had to use uka uka to light up the way but that only worked for a set amount of time, i dont really remember if the level was good or bad, i just remember it scared me shitless and i had to ask my big sister to finish it for me

Hard to remember all the bad experiences, as doing Let's Plays has taught me one thing: the Let's Play curse is strong and evil!
Probably the one that sticks out in my mind is Rail Canyon and Bullet Station from Sonic Heroes. Oh those two levels are evil...

Holy crap I totally forgot about that level. It was so mindbogglingly awful.. At least The Library was actually fun to play co-op on Legendary, but Cortana was just... ugh...

But those two levels are among the best in the game! Loads of awesome grindy action (albeit with loads of falling to your death). They're at least better than, say, Hang Castle. I remember spending like 2 hours on that level as team Chaotix because I couldn't find the last doodah and ended up running through the level 3 times in a row.

For me, well, that one part in Cave Story when you lose all of your levels and go through an area filled with spikes and annoying enemies that has to be done perfectly because there's no way to heal. I tried it about 15 times before giving up and accepting that all I was ever going to get was the bad ending. Still haven't finished that game.

My most hated level actually come from one of my favorite games of all time. Atlantica in Kingdom Hearts 2. Every time I started a new game I always hated having to do it. I love the Kingdom Hearts series to death and I thought the level was fine in KH1, but in KH2 it went from an interesting underwater dungeon with special combat unique to that world, to a musical quick-time event. It wasn't even the quick-time events that bothered me, it was the singing and dancing.

Before you jump all over me about that, I watched a lot of Disney movie as a kid and I am fully aware of all the musical numbers they had. I'm only saying that having a musical level in the game just felt kind of cheesy and awkward to me even when I played it as kid. I know there are plenty of other people who didn't mind the level or even liked it, this is just my opinion.

Ever since my second playthrough I have kind of enjoyed the Deep Roads sections to be honest. The Fade is a strong contender for least exciting level though. It is not necessarily the worst, it is just so frustratingly designed that you either get lost and backpedal a lot or you memorize the optimal path to minimize exposure to it because it is so lackluster.

For worst design I'd put up the Council Mission where you have to rescue the general in XCom: Enemy Unknown. It is a long bridge full of cover with thin men as the only enemies. Depending on when you face it in the game it can either be unforgivingly hard or super-duper-mega-easy and either way it just isn't fun to play.

Most caves in Pokemon due to high encounter rate, confusing layout and usually requiring use of Flash, Strength, and occasionally Surf and Rock Smash to pass through. The ones in Pokemon X/Y are a bit better (no Zubats or kamikaze Pokemon), but still aggravating.

Nowadays I seem to have less tolerance for any maze-type level in a game with random encounters and an encounter rate higher than 1:10 steps. Too often you find yourself at a dead end that will require 3-5 battles just to get out of.

I really disliked the air-boat level on Half-life 2 ("Water Hazard"). It put me off the entire game. Linear, grey-brown smeared scenery, unchallenging, no story progression. It even compared poorly to the planet-roving of Mass Effect.

Then there were some levels of Final Fantasy VII with random encounters every few seconds and a lot of walking about to do. Very irritating without adding any variety.

The latest game that irritated me with its levels was Deadlight - particularly those levels where you are being shot at by a helicopter gunship.

I hate Hades in the original God of War. It's just a brief, uninspired tract of platforming that gets awkwardly ushered in just before the big climax. And while the insta-kill rotating pillars with blades in them can be aggravating, that's not even my main beef with the level. I think it's the laziest design for any kind of underworld I've ever seen, let alone played through. It almost feels like they just *had* to somehow insert Hades in a Greek mythology-themed game, even if they didn't have any good ideas for it in the first place. God of War II gives off the exact same vibe - the feeling they still don't have any good ideas for it. So they made the Hades trip in the 2nd game easier, shorter and nearer the beginning, just to get it out of the way.

I'm mostly pissed off at the perfunctory delivery and the wasted potential.

Yes, that was awful.

For me one of the recent ones was Darksiders 2 the fight with Karkinos. For some reason, I found it incredibly frustrating.

I think someone is forgetting the Sewer level and the forced, out-of-place stealth mission. Both of those are almost always awful. :D

OT: I gotta echo what someone else said above and go with Water Hazard. I like almost all the other levels in Half Life 2, but that one is just a horrible chore. The sewer bit before it is pretty bad as well, but at least that one controls halfway decent. :p

Beat Cortana on Legendary with no deaths, yes I'm a gaming masochist. :)

I would say Cortana if I ever had a massive emotional reaction to it, but I just don't. I can think of five levels in Halo I hate more than Cortana.

Anyway, my level, and it looks like somebody else has posted from World at War.

Blowtorch and Corkscrew from Call of Duty: World at War on Veteran... just... just holy crap. I've not even managed to finish the thing yet. Also the final level of Gears of War 3. On normal the crappy story and boring final boss kills it, on insane it's just like a menagerie of awfulness.

Water dungeon in majora's mask. Seriously fuck that shit.

Not... Really a level so I don't know if it applies but still. The fucking qte in the force unleashed on the psp. The very last one against the emperor. You only get like 0.1seconds or some shit to react. I beat it by just learning the exact moment when it happens and then just guessing. Trial and fucking error

A recent one: from eso. I dont know the exact quest anymore. Its in ebonheart pact land. A dungeon where you had to control a dwemer spider. You had to try it 5 times before it would work (for some reason). There were 40dudes in the dungeon. If someone tries and fails the spider dies. There were 4 spwn points. And the respawn took a minute.... FUCK THAT SHIT. And then you finally are able to do it. And then you basically have to do it again...

Hmmmm....I'm trying to think of a truly bad or awful level that I just hated. I feel like saying The Water Temple from Orcarina of Time but I feel like that would be a cop out though. However I find it incredible that we are still talking about that level after so long. Shows what impact it has actually made when you think about it.

Other then that probably anything Halloween Town related in the Kingdom Hearts series. I just don't like it. Sure the music beat is fine and I like the theme but it does get stuck in your head. Also most of the map seems very sparse and claustrophobic compared to the rest. I also just don't like Sora's or the partner's designs in that area. I love the movie but yeah its always a slog for me to go there and I never enjoy the prospect of returning to Halloween Town. So that would probably be mine after the Water Temple.
