Mine was actually Final Fantasy XIII. I just loved everything about it. I even liked how yuhad to lay as different characters at the beginning. It made me really grow attached to them more as the story went on. And ofcourse the game looks amazing.

Either way, I would like to hear what you favorite RPG's are for two reasons. 1) I am looking for somethin new to try out and 2) I love RPG's

Final Fantasy IV is hands down my favorite RPG. Even more so than the Golden Sun series, Persona 3 or Final Fantasy VII. If you're interested in playing it they just released Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PSP. Also, if you're interested, the first two Golden Suns are on the GBA and the third is on the DS.

At the risk of not sounding like a pretentious hipster (redundant, I know), Final Fantasy VII was probably my favourite rpg. I loved the materia system, the combat and the story.

My runners up would be:
Final Fantasy X for combat and story.
Demon's Souls for the aesthetics and combat.
Diablo 2 for the atmosphere.
Pokemon Silver for atmosphere and gameplay.

Final Fantasy X - Best combat system in a game. I felt as though I was the character when playing it and the story was all the more emotionally engaging for it.

Final Fantasy VIII - Again with the character thing and the story.

Shadow Hearts 1 - Interesting take on JRPGs. Unlike the happy, light coloured environments commonly found in most JRPGs (which isn't really a problem. It's just after playing so many of them this game was refreshing.) This game took on a more darker world (not like the boring shades of grey we have this generation. It's different to that. The game has a lot of 'character' to it) It also had more humour then most games that I've played as well.

Shadow Hearts 2 Covenant - For improving on the previous game in so many ways. Graphically it is far more superior, It's much more humorous while still maintaining that dark feel, it has more voice acting and the acting got a lot better. The aesthetics of the graphics have (in my own opinion) much more character in it compared to the previous game as well. In short, a sequel that actually improved on the original.

Also, this isn't meant to be an attack or anything but, the fact that I had to play as multiple characters at the start of Final Fantasy XIII so much made it harder for me to 'connect' to them. In previous Final Fantasy games I felt as though I was the main character but, in this game I didn't feel like I was anyone and found it hard to connect to any of the characters. I also felt as though there was no real main character even though Lightning is supposed to be.

EDIT: To all those people below me saying "JRPG NO RPG NO TRUE RPG WRPG SUPERIOR WRPG TRUE RPG NOW MAKE ASSUMPTION OF ALL JRPG ME NO PLAY JRPG THOUGH" Go away. We have heard it all before and I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling this but, most of us probably don't care. We WILL call them RPGs and we WILL believe they are RPGs. Go play your WRPGs and stop making idiotic jokes against JRPGs. You (as in a lot of people, not everyone, I'm not going to make ridiculous assumptions as well), for the most part make assumptions and generalisations that are both ridiculous and unfair. There are many JRPGs that would fit YOUR definition of what an RPG is. So stop thinking they're all Final Fantasy XIII and go play your WRPGs and stop making stupid uncalled for comments. We'll go play our JRPGs and both sides will be the happier for it.

I'd also like to thank all the WRPG fans that aren't idiots and refrain from posting troll like comments. It means a lot to me.

Hrmm, so many. I just finished Mana Khemia (I REALLY want the second one but it's only out in the U.S/Japan -_-) and it was amazing. Persona 3 and 4 are also up there along with most Final fantasy's (including VIII and XIII, although personally the 2D ones were better, if only just). Atelier Iris series is also up there (though I only recommend them and Mana Khemia if you don't mind fetch quests and item creation) and if they count, Disgaea games.

Neverwinter Nights or Morrowind. Both fantastic games, good stories, good game play and both had enough complexity to make you feel like you were accomplishing something when your character kicked ass.
For example, I could kill dragons in NWN without taking damage. My friend tried playing once, managed to die four times in a minute (I counted) whilst fighting very low level sailors. Not a very difficult game but it's complex enough so that you can mess around to get a good character.
Morrowind was filled with skills you could have which once again meant you had to think about what you were doing. So many rpgs lack this!

Kingdom Hearts, it was interesting to visit all the Disney worlds and having FF combat done in true real time.

Oblivion by far. Such a beautiful game graphically, gameplay wise and in terms of the story. The depth it had to offer was incredible. I've played through it about 20 times and on my main game, i have over 500 hours of game time. And I cant wait to play it again to prepare for Skyrim.

JRPGs, there are too many to choose from. The entire Suikoden series beats it all hands down though.

WRPGs, the Fallout series (yes, even New Vegas), Oblivion (never got into Morrowind, but it's probably because I started with Fallout 3 and worked backwards through their games) and the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games

My best/favorite is a tie between 4. Terranigma and Secret of Mana on the SNES, Star Ocean: Till the end of time on PS2 and Lost Odyssey on 360. All of them are really good games and I had a fair amount of fun playing them.

Favorite RPG? I can give you a list of 5:

Planescape: Torment
Spirit Engine 2
Tales of Symphonia
Morrowind

The last one's tricky. I'm tempted to say Witcher 2. I'll wait for A) the patches to come in, and B) the hype to die down before I say for sure this is on my list. If not, Deus Ex. I also may have to make room for Deus Ex 3 when it comes out.

You should play Tales of Symphonia. That game is basically the opposite of angst.

Sorry but JRPGs are true RPGS.

That said, Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite RPG.
