KotOR, although Jade Empire, Morrowind, Oblivion and Mass Effect have all been bloody good too.

Actually, now that I think about it, it's probably a toss up between Kotor and Oblivion.

No one mentions the Megaten series yet?

Seriously, you seem to like jrpg setup, try either Persona 3 or 4. Truly mindblowing and it'll keep you busy long time.

Nostalgic? Baldur's Gate 2. Recent? Dragon Age 2. The latter took a lot of flak for not being a copy-paste of Origins, but instead trying something new. That's not to say it's perfect. It has some issues with repeating environments. But if you play and RPG more for the story and characters than the scenery, you really can't beat it. It has one of the most interesting narrative arcs in any genre of game I've played recently.

JRPG: Tales of Symphonia. Yes, it's cheesy and contains almost all the clichès you can think of, but it was the first game I experienced where the story was about something more than "good > evil trololo". Also, the combat system is amongst the best, even today.

WRPG: Baldur's Gate: I've never experienced a game where I've felt freedom the same way I did here. The atmosphere is incredible, and the story is interesting. I just wish they'd ditch that fucking RNG-based combat system.

Chrono trigger.

So. much. win.

And it has a special life to it that I just can't quite explain...

FF6 had a WAY better villain, though. Kefka was awsome.

Golden sun 1 and 2. For me the best games on the GBA, I can still enjoy myself today by mix and matching djinns and unlocking awesome attacks.

no, they really aren't. Sorry but you don't role play. Therefore... figure out the rest yourself. Seriously they aren't, a better abbreviation that I have seen on here is Turn Based Adventure Game. It gave me a few lulz.
I see someone is still using the fail definition of RPGs
Let me just tell you that, you are wrong.

Golden Sun: The Lost Age or Final Fantasy IV. Persona 3 and 4 are just behind them (I can't really choose one game from the two).

JRPG: Final Fantasy X. I actually managed to get quite emotionally involved in this game, but maybe I wouldn't have been today, since i can acknowledge the critique concerning it's story and pacing. Still plays great though.

WRPG: Oblivion and Fallout 3 (and New Vegas, basically just more of the same thing) are my all time favourites. I don't like the leveling system in Oblivion though, since it generally haves you either exploiting it and becoming too powerful or not exploiting it and risking becoming under-powered. I like the control you have of your skill point allocation in Fallout 3 much better.

Really a tie between Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption because of it's story plain and simple, and Final Fantasy IX, also for it's quirky story, and I may sound crazy, but the side game didn't seem as painful in IX.

RPGs... what ever game that has stats these days qualifies as an RPG, it's like the RP doesn't even matter.

I had a discussion once with a friend about catagorization of games, especially RPGs, I for one have yet to see a JRPG that actually does the RP part of it's lable justice.
I don't like the FF series, I have played Eternal Sonata, the world ends with you and some other JRPGs, I have been told that there are JRPGS with actual RP, your own character, choices actual character interaction, so on and so forth, but the ones I have yet encountered does not. so while I don't condemn the whole JRPG genre, I certainly condemn a big part of it.

Same goes for other similarly wierd lablings of western games like Diablo, sure a charcter with a class of your choice, but thats where the choices ends. you get some stats and kill some monsters but where is the RP?! nowhere I tell you.

I'm a pen and papre RPG fan and I hate to see the RPG lable get so easily thrown around, mixing actual RPGs like most of those made by Bioware and Bethesda, and I loved Divine divinity, sure it was limited, but it surely had RP. games don't even need to have customizable characters, look at for example the Witcher, geralt will always be the protagonist but you still affect his choices and actually take on his role as the witcher insted of just helping him transport from point a to point b with some monsters in between (FF series, I'm now talking about you).
damn it, even Fahrenheit (the indigo prophecy), which wasn't even labled as an rpg game, did a better job at being an RPG than most RPG labled games.

and in the end this losly throwing around of the RPG lable also gives th JRPGs a bad name, since you have to dig though all that muck before you actually find and J-game that deserves the RPG addon to it's lable.

ANW!
OT: my Favourite RPG would have to be Neverwinter Nights, after that I think Morrowind or Dragon Age: Origins.

JRPG: Never played one.
WRPG: Oblivion, only played DAO after that.
So, although i consider myself to be an RPG lover, i never actually end up playing that many RPG's.
Perhaps it's just the free-roaming i like.
