A tie in numerous directions.

My favourite list is Oblivion (seamless gameplay, very customizable),Morrowind (BREATHTAKING scenery),The Legend of Dragoon (it had a story that MOVED me,man...Very few games done that),Final Fantasy VIII (I loved the uniqueness of Junctioning),both Mass Effects (great story and great gameplay),and Gothic 1+2 (SUPERB atmosphere, and very intuitive gameplay).

Yeah. I like my RPGs. Does Dark Cloud 1 count? Loved the whole "Reconstruct the world" idea.

Any one of the Paper Mario games. Particularly Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Beats any FF any day.

Dark cloud 2.

To this day I cannot think of a single flaw with the game, other than the fact that it is nigh impossible to beat without looking at a guide.

I only have the original Vegas but I really enjoyed it. Once I get hold of all the DLC I reckon it might be a top hitter.

However Vagrant Story is a long time favourite of mine, unfortunately it doesn't quite hold up so well anymore but it's still very enjoyable.

And Final Fantasy's VII and IX. Yes I know VII is cliche but it's a damned good game in my opinion. Seriously. IX has stood the test of time, graphics wise, a lot better though. I really enjoy those games.

Oh Skyrim looks to be a class beater though, if it improves on everything in Oblivion (particularly the tear your eyes out terrible levelling stats system, not the weapon skills but things like endurance/strength etc) then I am so game. Just hoping that for once it isn't a buggy Bethsoft game. I dream of putting it in and it not freezing or crashing, ever.

My favourite CRPG of all time - the one I've played through 5 or 6 times and never tire of - is Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines.

V:TMB plays differently depending on what vampire clan you choose. It also allows and rewards different play styles - I've played it as a stealth game, as a melee specialist and intimidating thug, as a mage, as a charm and conversation specialist. Playing as a Nosferatu or a Malkavian it's almost a completely different game. It's filled with memorable characters, the crapsack version of Los Angeles its set in is vibrant and immersive, it has multiple, meaningful endings. In short, the whole result is just a pure classic.

Honourable mentions to Morrowind, Mass Effect and Planescape: Torment. More recent games such as Dragon Age 2 or The Witcher 2 I will have to think about and replay in a couple of years time.

Deus Ex for now. Although most RPGs I play make it feel like you're not playing properly if you take a more interesting path, Deus Ex makes it feel like you're always doing it wrong, and therefore beating the system, no matter how you do it.

Mass Effect 1 and 2 are both runners up. Unfortunately Mass Effect 1 didn't really feel very tight or refined. The weapons didn't feel like they had any weight, and it felt like the enemies were playing dead to make you stop annoying them rather being killed. Mass Effect 2's RPG elements were far too shallow.

I haven't actually played any JRPGs. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start?

Plenty to choose from, but my top choices would have to be FF7,10, Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean: Second Story, and Breath of Fire 3. All had good stories, great combat designs, and worthwhile side quests/bonuses.

My opinions on these games changes usually, but right now I love both KOTOR games and Mask of the Betrayer. Fallout: New Vegas is also probably the game I've spent the most time on out of any I've played. Probably has some of the best DLC in any game I have played, in my opinion. (Even if Dead Money was frustrating as hell, I thought the story, atmosphere and characters made up for it)

As far as older RPG go, the Fallout series is great. Combat isn't amazing but it makes up for it with great story and some very solid roleplaying mechanics. Also, obligatory mention of the Baldur's Gate games. I would say Planescape: Torment as well, but I've never got further than 10 hours because of two corrupted saves.

The RPG-7 [http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100724040105/deadliestfiction/images/a/a0/Rpg7.jpg], hurr durr.

Bad jokes aside, I fucking love Morrowind, even though it has a horrible combat and magic system. The atmosphere just gets me crazily immersed. I don't play it all that often, but when I do, I get lost for hours and hours on end.

I totally forgot to add Xenogears, DA:O and Mass Effect to my list. As someone who loves a good RPG, I consider myself lucky to have so many good games at my fingertips.

Torn between Final Fantasy 6 and Tales of Symphonia. Not far behind those would be Dragon Age Origins and KOTOR.

Morrowind, easily. It was the game that introduced me to high fantasy role playing. What an experience... I still play vanilla Morrowind to this day so this is not just nostalgia talking.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

In pretty much every regard save a niggling few it's my perfect rpg.

-Compelling story and narrative? Check.
-Entertaining and believable characters? Double Check!
-Well written and fluid dialogue? Check!
-Good use of the DnD license? Check!
-Tactical and strategic combat? Check!
-Wide variety of enemies and combat scenario? Not sure how many times more I can type it, but Check!
-Beautiful high resolution 2D panoramic artwork? Check!
-Active modding community providing new content? CheckCheckCheckCheck!

About the only things I would change would be to tighten up the combat slightly, tweaking a few spells and abilities that really aren't very good to at least make them useful, better character models and more visual diversity in terms of character customization, and a bit more stat dependent dialogue, situations where what you say is dependent on what your character is capable of. More clearly seeing the consequences of your actions in a few places would be nice as well, since it's often left quite vague.

That's about it! It's not actually a perfect game, pretty much no game is perfect save an elite few like Tetris or PacMan, and even then it's debatable. But in terms of what I want from an rpg experience is as close as a game has gotten to date.

Others worth mentioning are Vampire: Bloodlines, Planescape: Torment, The Witcher 2, Neverwinter Nights, and Fallout 2.

Not much into Japanese rpg obviously. Played a couple of the Final Fantasy games and that's it.
Damn it, you took most of mine, but I still have one ace up my sleeve, System Shock 2 oh yeah out come the big guns.
